Kerr-Vance Academy Honors State Champs

On May 25, Kerr Vance Academy held a banquet to honor the 2017 NCISAA state champion baseball and soccer teams.  After dinner, both teams were recognized and coaches presented individual awards.

Kerr-Vance Academy Students watch Presidential Inauguration

The fifth and sixth grades at Kerr-Vance Academy took time out today from their regular classes to watch the television broadcast of the Presidential Oath of Office and the Inaugural Address.

Language Arts teacher Anne Almand planned the lesson and said,  “This is the first Inauguration that our students have been old enough to experience with an understanding of the significance of this event.  As part of their study of the governmental structure of the United States, they have discussed the elements of the election process, and they have been witness to this controversial time in our American history.  So that the students can feel a part of today’s ceremony, they have memorized the Oath of Office to repeat as administered to the new President.

As a class, our students are aware of the message of excitement and hope that Mr. Trump has communicated to the nation in his challenge to ‘Make America Great, Again.”

KVA Student selected for Senate Page Program in Virginia

Sarah Allen, an eighth grader at Kerr Vance Academy has been selected for the Senate Page Program for the Commonwealth of Virginia.  The General Assembly will be in session during January and February.  The Senate Page Leadership Program is structured similar to a college preparatory program with components centered on developing future leaders.

Students who receive admission to the program carry on the tradition of page service in the legislature while fulfilling requirements in a professional development track comprised of speakers, site visits and classroom-like instruction. The mission of the program is to facilitate a structured environment in which young Virginians embrace responsibility and accountability, develop professional characteristics through strict standards of conduct and engage in the legislative process through work, observation and discussion. Sarah is the daughter of Richard and Jill Allen of Clarksville, Virginia.

KVA Student selected for prestigious Rotary Leadership Conference

John Averette, a junior at Kerr Vance Academy was recently selected to attend the Rotary Club Youth Leadership Conference in April at Camp Oak Hill in Virginia.  The conference will include experiential sessions on leadership, team building activities, and a rope course among other experiences.  RCYL award winners are selected for demonstrating leadership potential in scholastic, athletic, and civic activities.  John is a native of Henderson and the son of Curtis and Angie Averette.

KVA Lower School Students participate in Pen-Pal Project

Marcia Harntess’ elementary school art students at Kerr-Vance Academy recently participated in a Pen-Pal Project with students from Trujillo, Spain.  The project was organized while Mrs. Hartness’s family was in Trujillo for the wedding of her son, Sean, who is a graduate of KVA and the University of Charleston.  Sean’s bride, also an elementary teacher, arranged for students in her former school to correspond with their counterparts here at KVA.

The first shipment of handmade Christmas cards arrived last week and included picture postcards of Trujillo with handwritten messages from students.  KVA students enjoyed receiving the handwritten correspondence that they could keep for years and show off to their family and friends.

 

Kerr Vance Academy Holds Annual Grandparent’s Day Program

On Tuesday, November 22, Kerr Vance Academy held its annual Grandparent’s Day Program.  The event began with a prelude – students playing selected songs on piano, followed by the KVA Junior Band performing “The Nutcracker”.

The program also included student speakers, a special video celebrating grandparents, and songs by students in the Lower School.

The KVA Show Choir concluded with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.

The program was organized and directed by music teacher, Ms. Valerie Montjoy.
