SportsTalk: Vipers Take On Rival J.F. Webb Friday Night

What determines a rivalry? Is it the intensity? Is it the fierce battles between one another? What about the traditions that both teams bring to the table? It very well could be. In this case, however two factors that determine this great rivalry between teams from Henderson and teams from Oxford: Proximity and Longevity. In addition to both teams being in counties that border each other, Vance County and J.F Webb are two high schools that reside in the same conference that just so happen to be about 20 minutes from each other. In terms of longevity, you can call it a tradition for Vance County and J.F. Webb to play each other every year. High schools from Henderson and Oxford have played each other nearly consistently at least since 1923. Regardless of how rivalries are formed, one thing is for sure. No matter what conference these two teams are in, no matter the record or classification of each school, Vance County and J.F. Webb always play each other. Always have. Always will.

Two different high schools. Two different ball clubs. Both going in different directions. Vance County is sitting at 7-1 on the year and is in second place in the Northern Lakes Conference. Head Coach Aaron Elliott said at the beginning of the year that, “The goals have changed for Vance County. Our goal is to not just make the playoffs, but to make deep runs in the playoffs.” J.F. Webb on the other hand, is 1-8 on the year and is in second to last place in the conference. Keionte Gainey, Head Coach of J.F. Webb, who assumed the Athletic Director duties as well this year, is keeping high hopes up for the program. Despite J.F. Webb’s record, Coach Gainey calls this year’s team, “A very special group”, that consists of 17 Seniors that hold a special place in Gainey’s heart.

When you look at the matchup between Vance County and J.F. Webb, what are the keys to the game? For Vance County, consistency is key, according the Head Coach Aaron Elliott. “We gotta be consistent on offense, defense, and be better if special teams.” For J.F. Webb, Coach Gainey outlines what needs to happen in order for the Warriors to win on Friday, “We’ve got to play with grit and heart, I believe that we have the talent to beat Vance County. We are gonna give it our best shot. We wanna beat them before the conference changes next year.”

Whether it’s Henderson High, Henderson Institute, Vance Senior High, Northern and Southern Vance, or Vance County High, and whether it’s Oxford High, Oxford Orphanage, Mary Potter, or J.F. Webb, this matchup on Friday will be one for the ages.

Vance County High School will have home field advantage this week as the Warriors of J. F. Webb come calling. The Warriors have yet to win a game this season, and the Vipers may not get a better chance for a win than this Thursday night (moved up from Friday due to expected rain storms).

At 0-7 (0-4 Northern Carolina Conference), Webb averages 10 points per game and has allowed over 35 points.  Like Vance County, the Warriors they have hung in every game stubbornly, and have not been shut out this season. With just two games to go in the regular season, the Vipers’ scoring average has remained respectable at just under 23 points per game, and their most productive games were the 36-point win over Roanoke Rapids and 42 points in the thrilling 44-42 double-overtime loss to Bunn.

Like the Warriors, the Viper Defense has taken its lumps all season, allowing just under 34 points per game. Now 2-7 (1-3 NCC), VC can even their conference record with two well-balanced games this week and next. To do that, Viper QB Samien Burwell and his receivers will need to click together from the opening whistle.

Note: Southern Vance is off this week, preparing for its final regular season game next week: the annual Optimist Bowl against Northern Vance. The Raiders will also be awaiting word on whether they will make the playoffs, which may well depend on the outcome of the Southern-Northern game. MEANWHILE . . .

The Vikings and Warriors enter Friday night’s match up in Oxford in the same position they have been in for many years: struggling to avoid a last place finish in their conference. Northern Vance is 1-8 overall and 1-5 in the Northern Carolina 1A/2A, while Webb is 2-7 overall (thanks to a nonconference victory over 1A KIPP Pride) and also 1-5 in the NCC. Both teams got their one conference win over 1A Louisburg, and both teams missed their best chance at another conference win by falling victim to scrappy 1A Granville Central — the Panthers beat Webb 20-14 and Northern was shut out last week at home 21-0.

Webb’s Warriors have an edge over the Vikings on paper, scoring an average 17 points per game and allowing 29. In spite of some lopsided losses and a season opening shutout loss, the Warriors have not been shut out in league play, and they came within 4 points of upsetting Warren County (losing 28-25). Even though Northern can move the ball, they struggle to put points on the board, repeatedly stalling in opponents’ red zones. The Vikings average under 7 points per game, and their defense, although capable of stopping passing attacks, still allows 30 points per game, mostly on the ground. The Vikings have been shut out 4 times this season, twice by conference opponents.

Northern has won this matchup the past three seasons, but this might be Webb’s year to break that streak. Although Louisburg seems destined to lock up last place in the Northern Carolina, the loser of Friday’s game in Oxford will likely finish last among the 2A members.
