H-V Rec. & Parks Names New Program Superintendent, Facilities Supervisor

The Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department has named Tara Goolsby as the new Recreation & Parks Program Superintendent, and Tyler Terry as the new Recreation & Parks Facilities Supervisor.

Tara Goolsby – Recreation & Parks Program Superintendent

Goolsby graduated from Warren County High School in 1998. She continued her studies at Winston-Salem State University where she graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Therapeutic Recreation.

In 2011, Goolsby obtained a position with the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Youth Services Unit, returning to the department in 2017 as the Recreation & Parks Facilities Supervisor.

She is married to Lt. JL Goolsby of the Vance County Sheriff’s Office and they have two daughters, Mia and Jennifer.

Goolsby enjoys working with the Henderson-Vance community and is excited about her new position.

Tyler Terry – Recreation & Parks Facilities Supervisor

Terry graduated in 1997 from Kerr Vance Academy. She continued her education at Vance-Granville Community College where she received her degree in Criminal Justice and College Transfer. She then transferred to North Carolina State University and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminology in 2002 and has spent the last 15 years at Vance County Social Services as a Social Worker.

She is married to Sterling Terry Sr. and they have 2 children, Jayden and Giuliana. Their son has played sports for the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department.

Henderson-Vance Community, please congratulate Tara on her new position and welcome Tyler to our department!

Basketball Season Kickoff Clinic Scheduled for Oct. 26 CANCELED

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Basketball Season Kickoff Clinic sponsored by “Soul-Out” Ministry, Henderson Optimist Club, Boyd Honda of Henderson, Alamance Academy, LLC and the Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department originally scheduled for Saturday, October 26, 2019, has been canceled.

Youth Basketball Clinic to Focus on Gun/Gang Violence Awareness

“Soul-Out” Ministry, Henderson Optimist Club, Boyd Honda of Henderson, Alamance Academy, LLC and the Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department present the 2019-2020 Basketball Season Kickoff Clinic.

The clinic will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2019, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Aycock Recreation Center – 307 Carey Chapel Rd in Henderson. The clinic is designed for youth ages 6-14.

This year’s theme is “Gun and Gang Violence Awareness.”

The Community-Wide Advisory Council and Recreation Advisory Commission are seeking local residents who want to promote positive change in Vance County.

Both the council and commission serve as advisory boards to the Henderson City Council and Vance County Board of Commissioners on community outreach items.

Children & Families Invited to First Annual Pumpkin Splash

The Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department’s First Annual Pumpkin Splash will be held at the Aycock Rec. Center on Monday, October 28, 2019, from 6 – 8 p.m.

For $5, participants ages 2 to 13 will be able to pick out the perfect pumpkin from the pool and decorate it with their family.

Registration and fee are due to the Aycock Rec. Center by October 21.

Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Youth Basketball registration will be held Monday, September 23 through Sunday, November 3, 2019, at the Aycock Recreation Center.

Youth basketball is for boys ages 4-18 and girls ages 4-14.

Registration fee is $40 ($30 for those who played a sport in the 2019 season). Program fee waivers are available to those who qualify.

Come get creative with Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks’ Crafty Kids Classes! Children ages 2 to 5 will enjoy age-appropriate level craft projects led by an amazing instructor, Tyere Wiggins.

Come prepared for your toddler to get messy and have fun. Parents must stay to supervise their child and are welcome to join in on the fun!

Classes are offered at the Aycock Rec. Center on Monday, October 7, 14 and 21, 2019, from 6:45 until 7:15 p.m.

$1.00 fee for members, $2 for non-members.

D.R.E.A.M. to Hold Dance Team Tryouts for Youth

D.R.E.A.M. (Diverse Roles in Entertainment, Arts and Music) will hold Dance Team Tryouts on Saturday, September 21 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Sunday, September 22 from 1 until 4 p.m. at Aycock Recreation Center.

Females and males ages 5-17 with high energy who are able to perform an array of dances are encouraged to try out. Please come dressed in a black top and black bottom…no jeans.

No registration fee is required.
