H-V Rec. & Parks Announces Closure of Aycock Rec. Center, Fox Pond, Other Facilities

The governor of North Carolina recently declared a local state of emergency in response to Coronavirus (COVID-19), ordering K-12 public schools to be closed for two weeks and recommended additional precautions for community gatherings.

As a result, Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department will close the following locations effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020, through Friday, April 6, 2020:

  • Aycock Recreation Center and Aycock Aquatic Center
  • Old Aycock Gym – indoor facility
  • Fox Pond Park
  • All satellite sites including First Presbyterian Church and the Vance County Senior Center

All outdoor parks, excluding Fox Pond Park, will remain open.

Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks will monitor the situation and make an assessment on when it is safe to reopen some or all of the facilities. Updates about facilities, classes/programs and events will be available on our social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter) and website (click here).

Arthritis Exercise Class at Aycock Rec. Center Suitable for All Fitness Levels

The Aycock Recreation Center’s Arthritis Exercise Class is a FREE low-impact, joint-safe program developed for people with arthritis. This class, offered in partnership with the Arthritis Foundation, is suitable for every fitness level and has been proven to decrease pain and stiffness while increasing flexibility and range of motion.

Classes will be held at the Aycock Rec. Center from 2 until 3 p.m. each Wednesday and Friday, March 25 – May 22, 2020. Classes will not be held on April 10 or May 8.

Space in the class is available on a first-come, first-serve basis, with a limit of 20 participants.

Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks has extended the deadline to register for youth spring baseball, softball and teeball through Sunday, March 22, 2020.

Teeball is open to ages 4-6; playing age is determined as of May 1, 2020.

Baseball is open to ages 7 – 18; playing age is determined as of May 1, 2020.

Softball is open to ages 6 – 16; playing age is determined as of January 1, 2020.

Cost: Vance County Residents – $40; Non Residents – $60

Register at the Aycock Rec. Center during normal business hours and ask about fee waiver eligibility. Travel may be required for some games.

‘A Matter of Balance’ Workshop for Older Adults Open to First 12 Registrants

The Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department, in partnership with the Kerr-Tar Area Agency on Aging, will offer a free workshop titled “A Matter of Balance” at the Aycock Rec. Center in Henderson.

This is an award-winning series of eight sessions to be held on Mondays from 1 until 3 p.m. beginning March 23 and concluding May 11, 2020.

The sessions are designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity among older adults who are 60 years old and better. Space in the class is on a first-come, first-served basis with a limit of 12 people.

Participants must preregister by Monday, March 23.

The Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department’s Egg Hunt will be held at two locations this year: Aycock Recreation Center (307 Carey Chapel Road, Henderson) and Rollins Avenue Park (305 Rollins Avenue, Henderson) on Saturday, April 4, 2020, from 10 a.m. until all eggs are gone!

Aycock Rec. Center to Offer Spring Water Aerobics

The Aycock Recreation Center will offer spring water aerobics classes for both swimmers and non-swimmers from April 1 through June 30, 2020. Classes will not be held on April 10 or May 25.

Classes will combine low and high impact exercises with a focus on strength building, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility and having fun!

Classes will be offered Monday – Wednesday – Friday from 10:30 – 11:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.; Tuesday – Thursday from 7:15 to 8 p.m.

The cost is $1 for members and $2 for non-members.

FREE Henderson Junior Firefighter Program Open to First 15 Participants

The City of Henderson Fire Department, the Vance County Fire Department and the Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department will offer a FREE Junior Firefighter program for ages 11-15 this spring. The program will run April 6-8, 2020, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

This program is designed to enhance career awareness, personal development and the understanding of fire safety.

Participation is open to the first 15 youth who preregister. Participants must register at Aycock Recreation Center (307 Carey Chapel Rd. in Henderson) by Sunday, March 15.

Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks introduces “Body Blast,” its newest fitness class offered at the Aycock Recreation Center.

This 45-minute high-energy, high-impact group circuit training class will focus on all the problem areas and is guaranteed to get you into shape. The class instructor is Victor Hunt.

Classes are offered from 7:15 until 8 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday from January 7 – March 26, 2020. The fee is $1 for members, $2 for non-members.

The Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department is offering a full schedule of activities for the young and the young-at-heart this winter season. Many of the events are offered at the Aycock Recreation Center, located at 307 Carey Chapel Road in Henderson.

Upcoming activities include:

2020 Basketball Opening Ceremony Extra Extra!!!! Come out, snap pictures, get autographs or just enjoy and show support for the 2020 Basketball Opening Ceremony for the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department. The 2020 Polar Plunge will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2020, at the Satterwhite Point Glasshouse. Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m. and participants will jump at 10:30 a.m. The Polar Plunge is for courageous people to jump in Kerr Lake to support Special Olympics Vance County. This has been a successful event that has raised several thousand dollars for Special Olympics participants in this area. If you do not want to jump in, you can dip your toes in the water. Adult Basketball League Get your team together for the 2020 Adult Winter Basketball Season. This league is designed for adults ages 30 and up. There is a $420 Entry Fee per team (8 players per team). Take the ‘Polar Plunge’ For Vance Co. Special Olympics

The Vance County Special Olympics 2020 Polar Plunge will be held at the Satterwhite Point Glasshouse on Saturday, February 1, 2020. Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. that morning; jump begins at 10:30 a.m.

The inclement weather date will be Saturday, February 8, 2020.

The Polar Plunge is an event for courageous participants willing to jump into Kerr Lake in the middle of the winter, all to support and raise funds for the Special Olympics of Vance County.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with others.

All donations earned from the Polar Plunge will go to support local athletes. Individuals are required to collect a minimum of $30 to participate.

Prizes will be given for best costume (individual and team); most money raised (individual and team); and largest team.

Every participant will receive a t-shirt.

Registration forms, along with donations, are due by Friday, January 3, 2020, to Crystal Allen at the Aycock Rec. Center.
