The Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department announces a few of its upcoming events:

Fit and Feisty – this eight-week program provides information to participants ages 55 and better on topics related to health, wellness, safety tips and exercises to stay fit.

Join the program by logging on to Facebook Live on the Henderson Vance Special Programs page. Participants must preregister to participate at Aycock Recreation Center. There are only 10 slots available.

Virtual Job Readiness Training Program – this program prepares participants to obtain and excel at a new job. Basic employability skills include effective communication, problem-solving, resume building and interviewing. The Job Readiness Training Program also helps participants develop good work habits that facilitate ongoing success.

Join the program by logging in Facebook Live on the Henderson Vance Outreach page. Classes will be held on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. through Wednesday, November 4, 2020.

Arthritis Exercise Class – classes will meet on Wednesdays and Fridays from September 23 – November 4, 2020, from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. This is a FREE low-impact, joint safe program developed for people with arthritis. This class has been proven to decrease pain and stiffness while increasing flexibility and range of motion. This class is also suitable for every fitness level.

Paint at the Dog Park – the community is invited to paint stencils on the concrete walkways at the new dog park, Scentral Bark, on Saturday, October 3, 2020, from 9 – 11 a.m. To allow for social distancing, only 12 slots will be available.

The dog park is part of Rollins Park, located at 1600 S. Garnett St. Ext. in Henderson.

All-Boys Saturday Leadership Academy

Saturday Leadership Academy provides small group instruction, coaching, mentorship and leadership development for teen African American males ages 12-18 residing in Vance County, NC.

ELIGIBILITY: African American males ages 12-18 residing in Vance County, North Carolina.

WHEN DO WE MEET: Saturday beginning September 19, 2020, and ending Saturday, December 12, 2020, from 1-2:30 p.m. at Aycock Recreation Center, 307 Carey Chapel Road, Henderson, NC.

Orientation: We will meet parents, students, and coaches on Saturday, September 19 at 1:30 p.m. at the Aycock Recreation Center.

Social distancing will be required. Please wear your masks.

The Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department, along with community partners, will be hosting a Book Bag Drive-Thru this Saturday, August 29, 2020, from 11 – 2 p.m.

The Book Bag Drive-Thru will take place in the circle between the Henderson Police Department and McGregor Hall Performing Arts Center on Breckenridge Street in Henderson. Book bags are for youth attending school in Vance County.

Parents will enter from South Garnett Street and exit onto South Chestnut Street. Voter registration and Census forms will also be offered to parents.

Town Talk 07/22/20: H-V Rec. Department Discusses What’s Open, What’s Closed

Tara Goolsby, program superintendent for the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department, appeared on WIZS Town Talk Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Goolsby discussed what is still open to the public and what is temporarily closed as it relates to the H-V Rec. Department and the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.

Closed H-V Rec. Department facilities include:

• Aycock Recreation Center
• Aycock Aquatic Center
• Old Aycock Gym – indoor facility
• Fox Pond Park
• All satellite sites
• First Presbyterian Church
• Vance County Senior Center
• All playground equipment and structures

All outdoor parks (with the exception of Fox Pond Park), trails and tracks are open. While Fox Pond Park is currently closed, the walking trails are open and can be accessed from the trails at the back of the Aycock Recreation Center located at 307 Carey Chapel Road in Henderson.

Goolsby explained facilities were closed to follow CDC guidelines and NC Phase 2 directives of limiting social gatherings.

For free, outdoor exercise, Goolsby encouraged residents to enjoy a walk on the paved walking track that curves around four ballfields at the Aycock Rec. Center. Walking the paved track two times equals one mile.

Goolsby also said the parking lot at the Aycock Rec. Center is open 24 hours, seven days a week, and has been a popular place to walk during the shutdown. Walking the parking lot five times equals one mile.

In addition to offering outdoor exercise, the H-V Rec. Department staff has been busy planning virtual sessions for both youth and adults.

Virtual activities include:

• Weekly social media trivia contests focusing on the history of Henderson and Vance County
• Moving Mondays – dance/exercise class on Mondays at 10 a.m.
• Fall Prevention & Exercise Class – Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30 p.m.
• Body Blast Exercise Class – Wednesdays at 10 a.m.
• Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program – Wednesdays and Fridays at 3:30 p.m.
• Virtual Bingo – Thursdays at 12:45 p.m.
• Do It Yourself Crafty Kids – drive-through style craft kit pick up available for $5 each
• Paint With DP – Facebook Live sessions with a prize offered for the best painting
• Recreation Rocks Scavenger Hunt – find and take pictures of hidden rocks around Henderson
• Skills & Drills – athletic training for youth

Elite Skills & Drills: Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are so many restrictions placed on youth athletics. Our number one priority is the safety of our citizens. While we don’t recommend partaking in group competition, we also understand the importance that staying physically active has on your overall health.

Because of this, Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks will be working with coaches to put together skills and drills videos that your child can use to help develop their skills right at home. We will post links to our videos regularly on the Henderson-Vance Athletics page starting Friday, July 24, 2020.

Recreation Rocks Scavenger Hunt: Registration extended to Friday, July 31:  Participants ages 17 and under will design and submit rocks to participate in the scavenger hunt. Registration and rocks must be submitted at Aycock Recreation Center (307 Carey Chapel Rd., Henderson, NC) Monday –Friday between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. The deadline to submit rocks is Friday, July 31, 2020, by 5 p.m.

Participants will receive an e-mail at 8 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2020, with clues to find the location of the decorated rocks. Participants take pictures with each rock and submit to Lauren Newlin by email (lnewlin@ci.henderson.nc.us) or any HVRPD social media (Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram). The FIRST participant to submit ALL pictures with rocks will win a gift basket filled with goodies from HVRPD!!

Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department presents a “Recreation Rocks” Scavenger Hunt for youth ages 17 and under. Participants will design and submit rocks for the scavenger hunt.

The Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Department announces its summer programming opportunities for youth and adults alike. Sessions include:

HVRPD Madden 20 Tournament: Test your Madden skills in the first Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks Madden 20 Tournament. Play one-on-one in an online double-elimination tournament to be crowned Madden King. Winner will receive a copy of NFL Madden 21 when it is released. Everyone on the winning team will receive a copy of NBA2K21 when it is released. Social Media Trivia Contest: The Henderson Vance Recreation & Parks Department will begin a Social Media Trivia Contest starting on Monday, July 6 and ending on Wednesday, August 5.  Two trivia questions will be posted Monday –Friday between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on our social media sites (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat & Twitter). The first person with the correct answer will receive three points, the second person with the correct answer will receive two points and the third person with the correct answer will receive one point. Questions must be answered the same day they are posted to receive points. The participant with the most points at the end of the contest will win a prize.

DIY (Do it Yourself) Crafty Kids: The Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Department presents DIY (Do it Yourself) Crafty Kids. Participants will have the opportunity to purchase craft bags that will include crafts, coloring pages and stickers. Drive through pick up will be held on Friday, July 10, 17, 24 and 31, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at Aycock Recreation Center (307 Carey Chapel Rd in Henderson). The cost is $5 per craft bundle and can be purchased online at https://hvrpd.recdesk.com/ or in-person on the day of the event. You must bring exact cash.

Paint with DP: Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks will be having another FREE “Paint with DP” Facebook live session. Tune in to participate or just watch. You can purchase affordable painting materials at Walmart, Ollie’s or Dollar General. Once we have completed the painting, participants can send pictures of their masterpieces. The best painting will receive a $25 gift card. The Live session will be held Saturday, July 11, 2020, at 2 p.m. on the Henderson-Vance Athletics page.
