  • The Granville-Vance-Warren Beginner Beekeepers School will be Saturday, February 1st at 9:00am at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market.
  • Now is a good time to take your gardening equipment out and see if they work. Especially since it is getting warmer. 
  • You need to start planting for your spring garden. When planting, think about the problems that you encountered in  your last planting season.
  • With February approaching, you need to get ready to prune your fruit trees.
  • This is a good time to purchase your seed starting mix. Avoid using garden soil, for best results.
  • Now is the time to clean your planting trays.
  • You still have to continue planting trees and shrubs.

  • Now is an excellent time to plan your 2025 Garden out on paper. Include your Gardening Goals for this year.
  • January is inventory month. Do you have enough seeds, equipment, and supplies to prepare for the gardening season?
  • Be careful to store your garden chemicals in a place where it will not get frozen, especially with weather conditions like snow. The cold temperatures can alter the chemicals.
  • It’s still a good time to take inventory of your seeds. That way you will know what vegetable seeds to order, try ordering a new variety of seeds for the 2025 growing season.

  • Consider raising a garden in a raised bed if you think that you do not have much space.

  • Use caution. Don’t get caught up in all the seed catalog pictures. You only have so much space in your garden.
  • January is inventory month. Do you have enough seeds, equipment, and supplies to prepare for the gardening season?

  • The Vance and Warren County Beekeepers Association will meet on January 13th, at 7pm at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market.
  • The Beginning Beekeepers School will start January 18th, starting at 9am at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market. For more information contact the Vance County Cooperative Extension at (252) 438-8188.
  • Soil samples right now are $4 a sample.
  • Review your 2024 Garden Journal. Look back at your journal entries to see what went well and what did not go as well in your garden last year.
  • Now is a good time to check your house plants to see if they need repotting. 
  • It’s still a good time to take inventory of your seeds. That way you will know what vegetable seeds to order, try ordering a new variety of seeds for the 2025 growing season.

  • Vance County Regional Farmers Market’s last open day for 2024 will be this Saturday, December 14th, from 8am-1pm.
  • We encourage you to buy a North Carolina Christmas Tree this year for the Holidays.
  • If you have a cut live Christmas tree, check that live reservoir. Make sure it has an ample water supply. You do not want that tree to dry out. Do not put your tree next to a heating source or a fireplace.
  • Take a visit to our local plant nursery. Check out our other Christmas plants for the Holidays.
  • Remember to use personal protective equipment when doing landscaping. Eye and ear protection. Even sunscreen. Use a good pair of gloves.

  • The Handcrafted Holiday Market is coming up at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market. Saturday, November 16th from 8am-2pm. 
  • Take your soil samples to the Vance County Cooperative Extension. Do it as soon as possible. 
  • You need to have your frost protection measures ready. 
  • Go through your cleanup orchard. Clean up those leaves and limbs. 
  • Remember to use personal protective equipment when doing chores in the fall. Eye and ear protection. Even sunscreen. Use a good pair of gloves. 
  • Leaf collection season is upon us. Compost your leaves. Don’t burn them. 
  • Winterize any of your sprayers. Garden hose and other sprayers that have water in them. Let the water out so that it will not freeze and damage that equipment.

  • Vance County Regional Farmers Market is open on Saturdays 8am-1pm.
  • Vermiculture and Vermicomposting with Earthworms Workshop taking place on Monday, November 4th, starting at 6:30pm, led by Wayne Rowland. It will be at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market.
  • The Vance and Warren County Beekeepers Association will meet November 11, at 7pm at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market.
  • The Handcrafted Holiday Market is coming up at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market. Saturday, November 16th from 8am-2pm.
  • It is now too late to plant your Tall Fescue grass.
  • Do not let any weeds seed out in your garden.
  • It’s not too late to control fire ants. They are still around. So be aware of them!
