The 79th Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce Annual Membership Meeting and Banquet will be held on Tuesday, January 31 at the VGCC Civic Center.

This year’s event will include a delicious dinner and music, keynote address and various recognitions including: Vance County Schools’ teacher, assistant principal, and principal of the year, Vance County Schools’ “Shining Moment in Education” award, 2016 Ambassador of the Year Award and the prestigious Vance County Citizen of the Year Award for 2016.

Keynote speaker for 2017 is WRAL’s Scott Mason, the Tar Heel Traveler. Mason is a broadcast journalist with 30 years of television experience. He has won dozens of awards for documentaries, writing, and feature reporting, including three National Edward R. Murrow awards and 20 regional Emmys. In both 2004 and 2005, the Electronic News Association of the Carolinas named Mason the North Carolina Television Reporter of the Year. Mason’s success caught the attention of WRAL-TV in Raleigh, and in April, 1997, he became the station’s Documentary Producer. He researched, wrote, and produced nine documentaries before adding his talents to the nightly news team as a reporter specializing in features. Today, Mason is known as the Tar Heel Traveler. His Monday-Thursday feature series on WRAL takes viewers along the back roads of North Carolina where he meets memorable characters, finds out-of-the-way places, and unearths fascinating historical footnotes. The series has become so popular it has led to Tar Heel Traveler half-hour specials, which Mason produces each quarter. In addition, he has also published two books about his television adventures: Tar Heel Traveler: Journeys Across North Carolina (Globe Pequot Press) and Tar Heel Traveler Eats: Food Journeys Across North Carolina (Globe Pequot Press). Mason graduated in 1984 from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, where he majored in Journalism and Communications. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree in creative writing at Queens University of Charlotte and lives in Raleigh with his wife Nina, daughters Lane and Genie, and son Scout. From Brian Short, Director of Emergency Management for Vance County and Henderson at 10 a.m.

Latest National Weather Service Briefing — click here

Short said to WIZS News and other local media and local preparedness teams, “Snow continues to fall in Vance County this morning with more on the way before it ends later today. Presently there appears to be about 5 inches of snow on the ground depending on where you are in the County.

“Primary and secondary roads are dangerous to travel as of now. Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

“No power outages have been reported as of yet and we do not expect to a great deal of power related problems.

“The 911 Communications Center and our emergency responders are doing a great job processing and responding to emergency calls as they are received. Please be patient, keeping in mind that it may take our responders a little longer than usual to get to calls as travel is dangerous for them as well.

“The Emergency Operations Center for Vance County is presently not activated but can be activated quickly if it should become necessary. We remain poised to implement additional emergency protective measures as the storm progresses if the need should arise.

“Attached (above link) is the latest weather briefing from the NWS regarding the storm.  More information will be released as it is received.”

Precip to start Sooner; Snowfall Estimates Higher

Precip to start Sooner; Snowfall Estimates Higher

Brian Short is the Director of Emergency Operations for Vance County and Henderson.  He has attached here – click here – the latest weather synopsis from the NWS for the winter storm that is headed our way.

Short has been communicating regularly with emergency preparedness teams, local officials and local media over the last few days, and in his most recent email update, Short said, “Presently we are under a Winter Storm Warning. The timing of the event remains roughly the same, but as you can see our snowfall estimates have increased noticeably overnight.

“At this time we have no plans to open any shelters as we do not expect widespread power outages. Once the snow begins we are encouraging residents to stay off the roads. Snow accumulations are forecast to be heavy. Unnecessary travel during wintry conditions not only puts the driver at risk it also hampers road clearing efforts.

“We will be continuing to coordinate with local and State response agencies throughout the storm and will continue to forward along additional information as it is received.”

Additionally, if you are a member of a local emergency preparedness team or a local public official in need of anything further, you are reminded to contact Short directly.

Brian Short, Director of Emergency Management for Vance County and Henderson, has provided the latest briefing from the NWS regarding the winter weather event that will be moving into the area tomorrow and into Saturday.

Click here for the latest National Weather Service briefing – 4:15 p.m., January 5, 2016

In his afternoon email to local preparedness groups and local media, Short said, “Our snowfall totals have increased a little throughout the day and there is certainly the potential for us to receive substantial snowfall by the time this event finally subsides late in the day on Saturday.

“We have spent the majority of the day today coordinating with our local and State response partners. If this event does not diminish or worsens by tomorrow, we will likely be implementing a local State of Emergency that would remain in place as long as needed.

“We have no plans to open shelters at this time. This is the posture that we typically take during winter weather events especially when the likelihood of widespread (power) outages is not expected.

“The 911 communications center will be overstaffed and will remain overstaffed as long as it is warranted. We remain poised to take further action if it should become necessary.

“We do ask that once the snow begins to fall, that everyone please stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary as travel will likely become hazardous. This will also allow our road crews to do their jobs and scrape the roads as effectively as they can.

“Additional information will be forwarded along as it is received.”

Short said, “Attached is the latest from the NWS regarding a significant winter weather event that will be affecting our area of the state Friday night and into Saturday. As you can see, we are forecast to receive a significant accumulation of snow but thankfully no ice or freezing rain. However, snowfall of this magnitude certainly causes its own problems.

“We will be coordinating with our local and State response partners throughout the day today while continuing to monitor the system. Further updates will be released as they are received.”
