American Cancer Society to hold local Meet and Greet

American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Vance County to Hold Community Meet & Greet Event on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Maria Parham Medical Center

WHAT: Cancer survivors, caregivers, volunteers, and community leaders will gather to host a meet and greet event for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Vance County. Guests will hear how the community has benefited from funds raised, honor cancer survivors, and network with area volunteers and community leaders. Event sponsors will be recognized for their support of the American Cancer Society at this meet and greet event. Also, the new 2017 website is now available for teams and individuals to register now for next year’s Relay For Life event at www.relayforlife.org/vancenc.

BACKGROUND: The Relay For Life movement unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all. Relay For Life events are community gatherings where teams and individuals camp out at a school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Individuals and teams raise funds and awareness to help the American Cancer Society save more lives from cancer.

Employers connect with students at VGCC Manufacturing Day

Vance-Granville Community College held a “Manufacturing Day” celebration on Friday, Oct. 7, in the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. An estimated 275 middle and high school students from Franklin, Granville, Vance and Warren counties attended, along with VGCC students and other members of the community. They learned about how manufacturing has changed, local career possibilities in the field and options for education and training related to careers in the industry. The event was one of many Manufacturing Day celebrations held across the country that day.

Participating employers included Altec of Creedmoor, Asteelflash of Raleigh, Delhaize America/Food Lion Distribution Center of Butner, Dill Air Controls Products of Oxford, Eaton of Youngsville, Glen Raven of Norlina, Ideal Fastener of Oxford, Mars Petcare of Henderson, Novozymes of Franklinton, Plastic Ingenuity of Oxford, Revlon of Oxford, Shalag of Oxford, Staffmark of Henderson, Stay Online of Creedmoor, Sunrock of Butner, Superior Tooling of Wake Forest, TFS of Wake Forest and Universal Forest Products of Franklinton.

VGCC technical programs were also represented, including Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Technology, Automotive Systems Technology, Bioprocess Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, Mechatronics Engineering Technology and Welding Technology.

Attendees also learned about the North Carolina Triangle Apprenticeship Program (NCTAP), which partners with colleges like VGCC and employers to prepare a skilled workforce. During lunch, Robbie Earnhardt, owner of Superior Tooling, discussed NCTAP with representatives of the other companies in attendance. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the apprenticeship I had,” Earnhardt said. An alternative to the traditional four-year college degree, the program takes a student from high school through a two-year community college program like Mechatronics Engineering Technology, with the guarantee of a job at the completion of the program. “We need more local industry partners in NCTAP,” Earnhardt said, noting that Dill Air Controls Products has already joined. “Many industries have trouble finding skilled workers. This can help.”

The Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant program at VGCC organized Manufacturing Day, with support from the Advanced Manufacturing Skills Training Alliance (AMSTA), a partnership of VGCC and local K-12 school systems. With the help of the $1.75 million TAACCCT grant, the largest single competitive grant in VGCC history, the college has developed and enhanced innovative training programs for advanced manufacturing careers. The TAACCCT grants are part of a nearly $2 billion initiative of the U.S. Department of Labor to expand targeted training programs for unemployed workers, especially those impacted by foreign trade. WRAL TV’s Bill Leslie to Perform at McGregor Hall

This award-winning North Carolina journalist is also an internationally acclaimed musician, singer and composer who performs across the globe with his group Bill Leslie & Lorica.

This five-member ensemble showcase a blend of Celtic, Folk and New Age music that includes albums that have topped World Music charts in the U.S and abroad. His most recent recording “Scotland: Grace of the Wild” was named World Radio Album of the Year in 2013.

Bill Leslie & Lorica’s soothing musical configurations include the guitar, Celtic whistle, violin, flute, piano, percussion and vocals. Bill seems to transport his audience into his music, inviting you to travel with him as he explores various melodies that often describe his journeys through his beloved home state such as his hikes among the ancient pines of North Carolina’s Linville Gorge.

Mayor Eddie Ellington calls for special meeting

Mayor Ellington has requested a Special Called Meeting of the Henderson City Council for Friday, October 28, 2016 at 12:00 noon.  The purpose of this meeting is to consider a wastewater agreement relating to the ongoing construction project and approving a Kerr Lake Regional Water repair relative to the generator wiring to the raw water pump station.

This meeting will be held in Council Chambers at City Hall, 134 Rose Avenue, Henderson, NC.

The public is welcome to attend.

The City of Henderson Public Services Department Sanitation Division will follow the schedule below for holidays during the month of November & December

 

 

Friday, Veterans Day, November 11, 2016

Garbage collection by Waste Industries will run its normal schedule

Brush by the City will run its normal schedule

No recycling this week

 

Sanitation-Brush and Recycling by the City

November-24th Thanksgiving Day-collection will be Wednesday November 23rd

November-25th Friday route will run its normal schedule

No recycling this week

December-26th Monday’s normal route will be collected Tuesday December 27th

 

Garbage Collection-Waste Industries

November-24th Thanksgiving Day-collection will be Friday November 25th

November-25th Friday’s normal route will be collected on Saturday November 26th

Since Christmas is on a Sunday, garbage collection will run its normal schedule

 

Loose leaf collection started the week of October 24th, 2016 on a limited basis and is increasing as needed as the accumulation of leaves become heavier.  Loose leaves should be placed in rows or piles at the roadside.  Leaves shall not be placed in the gutter or street area or in an open ditch.  Loose leaves must be leaves only and not contain any broken glass, rocks, large sticks or other debris that could cause severe damage to the leaf collection equipment.

Community Voices Session I

The Community Voices Program kick-off took place last week and was a great start to what we hope will be something wonderful for Henderson/Vance County–citizens working together to build a strong community.

Co-sponsored by NC Agricultural & Technical State University in Greensboro, and Vance County Cooperative Extension, the training sessions already have members of our community who are trained to ready to serve as facilitators for this program.   And there is no cost to participate.

Even if you missed the kick-off, please come to Session I which will be held on Thursday, October 27, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market located at 210 Southpark Drive (off Beckford Drive) in Henderson.

Please call 252-438-8188 to sign up to attend next week’s session so we may have adequate supplies ready for you.  Also, please feel free to promote this to someone in your community who might like to participate.

This training series is designed for:

  • People who want to be trained for help others to discuss critical community issues.
  • People who want to create a shared vision for their community’s future.
  • People who are interested in learning good listening and communication skills.
  • People who are willing to volunteer their time to implement a community action plan in support of this community effort.

Sessions may be scheduled different days of the week to accommodate the participants’ schedules and the holidays.  Following is a list of the training topics to be discussed:

Incident on Main Campus Reported at Vance-Granville Community College

On Thursday September 22nd at around 4:00 p.m., Joshua Abraham Coles, 26, of 11 Delta Place, Henderson was charged with misdemeanor assault on a Government Employee, resisting a public officer, and second degree trespass on the main campus of Vance-Granville Community College.

Information published in a Public Information Release said, “Mr. Coles was a person of interest in an investigation being conducted by the VGCC campus police department. He was asked to leave the campus. He refused to leave and assaulted a security officer and a campus police officer. No injuries reported from the suspect or officers involved.”
