SportsTalk: Vipers Take An Unexpected Week Off

The Vipers of Vance County are having a good football season so far as we are officially over halfway through the 2024 campaign. Head Coach Aaron Elliott joins SportsTalk on WIZS to talk all about it.

Coach Elliott first off gave us his thoughts on the 38-33 wins against Louisburg. “A couple of things that we liked and improved on was our offense. We were able to put together a pretty complete offensive game where we had 500 total yards of offense and five touchdowns so we had a really good game offensively. Some things that we didn’t like we gave up some big plays on defense. That just came down to missed assignments.” The Vipers had three different rushers go over for 100 yards in the game against the Warriors. Javion Vines-Holder and Antoine Doyle Jr with 117 yards each, while Jontavious Nile with 171 yards for the night. Nile is now Top-30 in the state of North Carolina in rushing with over 700 yards and 10 touchdowns. “We knew he was going to be a workload for us and he’s really done a great job for us.”

With no game this week, Coach Elliott will turn into a scout as he will head to Creedmoor as South Granville hosts Southern Durham in a Northern Lakes Conference matchup. “I plan on being there that way we can do a little scouting on South Granville and actually cheer for them a little bit.” The Viper’s next game is at South Granville, on October 11th.

The game between Vance County and East Rutherford has been canceled this week due to Hurricane Helene impacting the western part of the state where East Rutherford would be coming from. Vance County was supposed to have a Hurricane Relief Rally during the game on Saturday, but Coach Elliott says that if anyone wants to bring their supplies for donation, they can bring their supplies to Vance County High School anytime during the week and the weeks ahead. Vance County High School is located at 925 Garrett Road here in Henderson.

Even though the game has been canceled for this Saturday, there is still football in Vance County this week at least. The Vance County JV Vipers host Wake Prep and their JV squad tonight here in Henderson. Coach Elliott gives us his insight on what impresses his JV Team the most this season. “I like to go watch and play… it’s how aggressive they are on plays. How they get after the ball on defense, they’re flying around making plays, they tackle well. And I always think about that because you know the JV is your future. The JV, they’re good you know, they’re winning the conference right now so we’re pretty excited for them.”

Coach Elliott’s message for the fans coming to the JV game tonight is to, “Just come out and support. Although the Varsity game was canceled, it gives us some way to come together and watch a little football, especially this week.”

Choosing The Right Christmas Tree For You

With those Thanksgiving leftovers slowly clearing out of refrigerators, thoughts turn from one holiday season to the next. And for many, that means choosing and decorating a Christmas tree.

Some households choose to blend the two seasons, trimming the tree as soon as the Thanksgiving table has been cleared. Others, however, prefer to wait until the calendar turns to December to begin decorating their homes for Christmas.

Choosing a Christmas tree can be a lot of fun for families – whether you go to a choose-and-cut farm or wander among the plentiful firs and pines that wait to be chosen in lots that pop up at this time of year.

Vance County Cooperative Extension’s Wayne Rowland has a few tips to keep in mind when selecting a live tree:

  • Decide where the tree will be placed – if it will be in a corner, you don’t necessarily need a tree that looks good from all sides. You may need to look for a #1 premium grade tree if all sides of the tree will be visible.
  • If you choose a balled and burlap tree to plant in your landscape after the holidays, remember to choose a type that will live in this climate. Pines, cedars and cypress may fit the bill.

Keep the trees well watered while they are being displayed in the home – it will help them stay fresher longer. Remember, however, that cut trees will dry out in heated homes, so look for the freshest ones. Close floor vents that may be near the tree and consider putting up the tree in a cooler part of the house to extend the tree’s freshness.

Almost all counties in North Carolina can grow Christmas trees, but the popular Fraser firs can only grow in the mountains and are shipped nationwide.

In addition to the Fraser fir, other native grown trees include white pine, Virginia pine, red cedar and Leyland Cypress. The different species of trees have different characteristics, so be prepared to consider what’s important to you in the tree you choose: is it foliage density, color or fragrance that you most desire?

Plenty of growers have their own retail lots during the holiday season, and there are many charitable organizations and civic groups that use Christmas tree sales as fundraisers.

But choose-and-cut farms offer families an“experience” that could include activities for everyone to enjoy.

SportsTalk Omari Allen Signs Letter Of Intent With ECU

Vance County High School’s 2021 football season resulted in a trip to the state playoffs. One of the big reasons, and that’s a term that certainly fits this story, is Omari Allen. Allen was a lineman for the Vipers and a good one.  Good enough to garner the attention of East Carolina University.  On Wednesday, Allen signed his national letter of intent to play for the Pirates.  Allen received an official offer this past June and Allen spoke with his coaches at length about the decision to attend ECU.

At yesterday’s signing, held at the school’s library, Vance Co. High School Athletic Director Joe Sharrow said he was very, very proud of Allen’s accomplishments over the course of his high school career.  “Allen embodies the term “leadership”,” said Head Football Coach Wilbur Pender. “He provided great input and feedback to the coaching staff,” Pender continued. Allen credits Pender with turning the school’s football program around and said it has been fairly easy navigating the changes that have come through the school with different head coaches and the consolidation of Northern and Southern Vance that happened during his high school football career.

In addition to his coaches and Vipers players, Allen had many family members present. Allen’s mother described her son as a gentle boy who was always huge. “Every mom know it’s a lot taking care of a child. It’s not always easy,” she said. She said Omari had great support from the coaching staff. “He’s worked really hard but I’m not ready for him to leave,” she added.

His grandmother was also in attendance at the signing ceremony and said it was a bittersweet day. She said Omari would do anything for her such as mowing grass and other household chores. She also said he really enjoys her cooking.

Allen took the signing opportunity to thank all of the school’s staff, coaches, players and family members who have made it possible for him to continue his football journey at East Carolina.  Allen says he plans to play 10 to 15 plays a game as a freshman and to make an impact immediately at ECU.

 

West End Baptist

West End Community Watch Meeting 4-17-18

The West End Community Watch meeting will be held Tuesday, April 17th, 6:30 p.m., at West End Baptist Church on Dabney Drive.  The speaker will be Dennis Jarvis, the new Director of the Economic Development Commission.  Law Enforcement will be present to hear concerns and report events.  All are invited. This watch group regularly meets with three other groups; Westover Terrace, Deepwood, & Shirley. We would like the newly formed Lynnhaven area watch group to join us for meetings. Anyone may attend our meetings, regardless of place of residence.
