Mills Stepping In As Interim Vance Economic Development Director

Newly retired Granville County Economic Development Director Harry Mills is stepping in on a part-time basis to be interim economic development director in Vance County. According to Vance County Manager C. Renee Perry, Mills started Wednesday, Mar. 6 and will be on board to work with McKinley Perkinson, who announced last month that she is stepping away from the position.

“He will start in his official capacity on Mar. 20 as interim until we find a permanent replacement,” Perry said in an email to WIZS News. Perry said she reached out to Mills to see if he’d be interested.

In a phone conversation earlier Thursday, Mills said he looks forward to helping fill in until a successor is hired.

“It was a mutual agreement,” Mills said. “They needed someone…it’s a good opportunity to help and continue the momentum” for development in the county and to be available to help when economic development opportunities arise.

“Harry will bring his enthusiasm and experience to this role. He’s familiar with Vance County and has historically worked with our past Economic Development directors,” Perry said, adding that she looks forward to his expertise in economic development.

Mills Appointed to State’s Compliance Commission for Accountability

Granville County Economic Development Director Harry Mills has been appointed to the State Board of Education’s Compliance Commission for Accountability.

This Commission, which includes principals, teachers and central office staff, as well as members of district school boards and the community, is charged with advising the State Board of Education – through the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) – on testing and other issues related to school accountability and improvement.

Issues the Commission is tasked with addressing include proposed changes to the state’s accountability program; the testing code of ethics; test security and administration; auditing procedures that ensure the integrity of testing and accountability programs; and other related issues.

Through his role as Economic Development Director, Mills currently works in partnership with Vance-Granville Community College and with Granville County Public Schools’ Career Technical Education (CTE) program to help prepare students for the workforce.

The Compliance Commission for Accountability meets annually (at least) and the term of the appointment is four years. Mills’ appointment extends from August 6, 2020, to December 31, 2023.

Harry Mills Graduates from REDI

Harry Mills, Granville County Economic Development Director, graduated in May from the Rural Economic Development Institute (REDI), an intensive, three-month training program designed for rural community leaders. Rural Center President Patrick Woodie presented certificates to the program’s 31 graduates during a ceremony at the NC Rural Center.

For 27 years, REDI has helped rural leaders improve their leadership skills and increase their knowledge of economic and community development strategies, equipping them with the tools they need to tackle the issues facing their rural communities.

This year’s class participants included elected officials, economic development professionals, business owners, and civic leaders. More than 1,100 rural leaders have graduated from REDI since the program began in 1989.
