A Strategic Planning Retreat was held March 24-25 with almost 50 personnel, board members, alumni, community partners, and other stakeholders in attendance.
Friday evening’s activities included reflecting on MHCO’s past, sharing resident and staff experiences, discussing the current organizational profile, and analyzing where MHCO stands currently including internal strengths and weaknesses and external threats and opportunities for growth.
Saturday’s activities included envisioning the future and strategizing how to close the gap between MHCO’s operations in 2017 and vision for 2021.
Breakout groups revised the mission, vision, and quality statements and developed a new tagline. Goals, objectives, and initiatives were developed to enhance the sustainability of MHCO including utilization and stewardship of resources, community partnerships, and recruitment and retention of employees.
The strategic plan ideas will be compiled and discussed at the May meeting of the Board of Directors for feasibility and implementation.
This retreat was the first of many discussions about the bright and promising future of MHCO.

After over 30 years of service, our Superintendent, Dr. Dorwin Howard has made the decision to retire. Dr. Howard assumed the leadership role during a tumultuous time and must be commended for calming any concerns in our Granville County Public School system. Now the school board is in the process of identifying candidates and hiring the next leader of our schools. The school board is using a variety of communication methods to get your input.
This letter is merely a request of our residents to stay engaged, and to provide the school board with your input on this important search process. You can do this in a variety of ways: complete the online survey on the school district website https://www.gcs.k12.nc.us/; or, obtain a paper copy at any of our schools; and/or, attend the Granville County School Board meeting on March 6 and share your comments.

Creedmoor, NC– Falls Lake Academy is a tuition-free public school. Any child who is qualified under the laws of North Carolina for admission to a public school is qualified for admission to FLA. FLA does not limit admission to students on the basis of intellectual ability, measures of achievement or aptitude, athletic ability, disability, race, creed, gender, national origin, religion or ancestry. Children must be 5 (or older) on or before August 31, 2017 to be eligible for Kindergarten during the 2017-2018 school year.
Falls Lake Academy will be taking applications beginning January 3rd, 2017 and ending at 5:00 p.m. on March 3rd, 2017. Applications will be accepted for Kindergarten through 11th grade for the 2017-2018 school year. Operation Silent Night results in 88 arrests in the four county area
Nearly 230 law enforcement officers from state, local, and federal agencies joined forces this week for Operation Silent Night, an enforcement operation that served outstanding criminal warrants and conducted compliance checks on high risk and violent offenders on probation and parole in Vance, Granville, Warren, and Franklin counties.
Significant arrests and accomplishments included:
Confiscation of 10 firearms including assault rifles and significant quantities of ammunition
Confiscation of significant quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana and cash
Location and cleanup of a home methamphetamine lab in Franklin County
Absconder from post-release supervision safely brought into custody after a three-hour standoff in Franklin County
Recovery of a stolen vehicle in Vance County
Eight parole warrants issued and served for parole or post-release supervision violations
118 searches of probationers attempted, 71 completed

The Granville County Chamber’s Annual Banquet has been scheduled for Monday evening, January 30th, 6:30 pm in Vance-Granville Community College’s Main Campus Civic Center.
The evening will once again include the presentation of the Chamber’s most prestigious award, the John Penn Citizen of the Year Award, recognizing outstanding community service. The death of Lillian Terry of Bullock has officially been ruled “asphyxiation from drowning,” according to Granville County Sheriff Brindell B. Wilkins, Jr. and the findings of the Medical Examiner’s Office in Raleigh.
Mrs. Terry’s body was discovered on Saturday evening, October 15th after the Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to her residence at 9524 Farrow Lane. Tenants who rented the upstairs garage apartment of the Terry home reported finding Terry floating face down at the shoreline of the lake behind her home and alerted authorities through a 911 call. The call came in at 4:20 p.m. Saturday.
Wilkins stated that Hurricane Matthew may have played a role in Terry’s death.
“The water was still high after the storm, and we believe Terry was attempting to get out to her boat dock, which was about 40 yards out in the water,” Wilkins said. “She had on chest waders when she was found.”
Due to the condition of the body when it was discovered, it was estimated that Terry’s body had been in the water for several days, Wilkins added. The water surrounding the dock at that time (Saturday) was also estimated at about seven feet deep.
Lillian Terry was the wife of John Terry, who was reported missing by a co-worker in September of 2015. A UPS employee, Mr. Terry did not show up for his shift and had not reported for work in three days when his disappearance was reported to authorities last year. His whereabouts, according to Wilkins, are still unknown.
“We have been proceeding with caution in investigating this case, ” Sheriff Wilkins said on Wednesday. Because of the circumstances surrounding this entire investigation, we had to look at all possibilities to eliminate any questions that may have arisen around this particular incident.”
The autopsy report released from the Medical Examiner’s Office this week has led Wilkins to the conclusion that no foul play is suspected in Mrs. Terry’s death.
No details have yet been released concerning funeral arrangements.
