Tar River Elementary Principal Completes Distinguished Leadership Program

-Press Release, NCPAPA

Courtney Currin, principal of Tar River Elementary, recently completed the Distinguished Leadership Program (DLP), a year‐long leadership development program for practicing school principals designed and provided by the North Carolina Principals and Assistant Principal’s Association and sponsored by the American Express Foundation through the North Carolina Alliance for School Leadership Development (NCASLD).

The Distinguished Leadership in Practice Program (DLP) uses a non‐traditional professional development model that is aligned to the performance evaluation standards adopted by the State Board of Education for North Carolina’s school leaders.

This unique cohort‐based program is designed to limit principals’ time away from their schools by allowing them to attend face‐to‐face sessions once every other month while accessing on‐line assignments, materials and coaching in between face‐to‐face sessions. Principals engage in a series of authentic activities throughout the year‐long experience that are designed to build the capacity of their schools and their own capacity as “Distinguished” school leaders.

“The leadership of the school principal is by far one of the most important factors in school quality. By completing this very rigorous program, our DLP graduates have demonstrated their commitment to continuous improvement by working to improve their leadership skills as they simultaneously improve their schools. We are proud to include them in the ranks of successful DLP completers,” said Dr. Shirley Prince, NCPAPA Executive Director.

This program is offered in Chapel Hill and serves principals in all eight regions of the state.

Granville Co. Schools Closed Sept. 13 & 14; Northern Granville Middle Designated as Shelter

-Information courtesy Dr. Stan Winborne, Public Information Officer, Granville County Public Schools

Forecasts for Hurricane Florence continue to show a significant threat to our area in the coming days.  After consultation with Emergency Management officials, we have decided to cancel school for all students and staff for Thursday, September 13 and Friday, September 14. Also, all after-school activities and athletics have been canceled for Wednesday, September 12.  Our after-school programs will close at 5 p.m.

We realize that the timing and track of the storm may change, but we are making this decision with an abundance of caution, and to allow our families and employees adequate time to prepare for what may come with the storm.

Please know that Granville County Emergency Management has designated Northern Granville Middle School as an official public shelter.  They recommend that this shelter ONLY be used as a last resort.

Granville County Emergency Management staff encourage anyone who feels unsafe to stay in their own residence to seek shelter with friends and family FIRST. If available, and individuals can afford it, they also recommend seeking shelter at a hotel or similar accommodation rather than staying at the public shelter. Due to the magnitude of the storm’s predicted impacts on our state, there are extremely limited resources to support a public shelter and, at best, they can only guarantee a solid roof overhead.

If you have no other alternative but to come to the public shelter, Emergency Management staff recommend that you bring sleeping bags, pillows, clothing, personal medical needs/medications, personal hygiene items, special dietary items, and other personal comfort items for each member of your family that may come to the shelter. Again, they highly recommend sheltering in place, at your own home if you feel it is substantial enough; however, before coming to a public shelter, they encourage you to seek shelter with friends and/or family or, if affordable, in a hotel.

Finally, if you experience power outages, please contact your electric company provider.  Please only call 911 in the case of a true emergency.

We will send any future updates on our school calendar as needed.  Thank you all and we hope you will stay safe in the coming days.

At a special called meeting on Thursday, July 19, the Granville County Board of Education appointed five new principals in schools across the school district.

Superintendent Dr. McLean communicated to Board Members that these changes will help continue to support efforts to move the district forward, saying, “I am confident that these newly appointed leaders will continue to help bring about positive change.  I am grateful for the staff and community members who helped in the process of their selection as candidates for these positions.”

Dr. McLean also spoke about the direction the district is headed, commenting on her commitment to involving stakeholders and a focus on always doing what is in the best interest of the students of the district. “With input from the community, this past year we developed a newly crafted mission and vision for the district. We need dynamic and active leaders such as these five individuals to help bring it to life. We look forward to unveiling that soon to the public and believe it will continue the momentum and excitement we have built over this past school year. We are so excited about what the future will bring for the students of our school district! They deserve nothing but the very best.”

The following individuals will transition to their new principal roles during the next two weeks. Staff from across the district, including our year-round schools, are already working tirelessly to prepare for a smooth start to the 2018-2019 school year. Granville Co. Schools Declare May 16 Optional Teacher Workday

-Information courtesy Dr. Stan Winborne, Public Information Officer, Granville Co. Public Schools

On Thursday, May 10, the Granville County Board of Education unanimously approved a recommendation to cancel classes for all traditional calendar students on Wednesday, May 16, and designate it as an Optional Teacher Workday for staff.  On this day, many educators from across the state will be gathering in Raleigh to show their support for public education to state lawmakers.

Due to the large number of leave requests on this day, GCPS cannot secure adequate staffing to maintain a safe, effective learning environment for our students. The Board of Education and administration understand the disruption this may cause with our families’ busy schedules. We will be providing information soon about ways to support our children and their families on this day without school.

The Board of Education also understands the importance of supporting our hardworking and dedicated educators in their efforts to improve public education. We hope that you will join them in being champions for our children and all they deserve.

Dr. Alisa R. McLean Completes N.C. Next Generation Superintendent Development Program

Alisa R. McLean, Superintendent of the Granville County Public Schools, was among 40 superintendents from across the state to graduate from the North Carolina Next Generation Superintendent Development Program Cohort V. The program is designed to support the growth, expansion and enhancement of superintendents using the North Carolina Superintendents Standards, through a formative process that advances the stated purposes of the North Carolina Superintendent Evaluation process, said Jack Hoke, program coordinator and the executive director of the North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association.

The year-long program was comprised of eight face-to-face sessions that guided superintendents as they reflect on and improve their effectiveness as district leaders; focused on their personal leadership goals and linked goals with district and state goals; and guided and facilitated the professional development of superintendents toward advanced levels of executive leadership as defined by the North Carolina Standards for Superintendents.

Hoke said of our Superintendent, “Dr. McLean developed a strong network of superintendents to consult with as part of the program and he/she contributed to the discussion on emerging issues and innovative practices occurring in the Granville County Public Schools.

Dr. McLean said, “The Next Generation Superintendent Development Program provided me with the opportunity to network and learn from superintendents from around the state. I am grateful for the North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association and Mr. Hoke for bringing us together to focus on current issues. Collaboration and communication with other superintendents are essential keys to success for all district leaders”
