Bears Spotted in Oxford! City Offers Safety Tips to Avoid Confrontation

There have been several bear sightings in the City of Oxford recently. Here are a few bear safety tips to help avoid confrontation:

*If you see a bear, remain calm and leave it alone. Never feed, approach or surround a bear.

*If you absolutely must feed your pets outside, make sure all food is consumed and empty bowls are removed.

*Clean all food and grease from barbecue grills after each use.

*Keep birdseed, bird feeders and hummingbird feeders where a bear can’t reach.

*If a bear is in the area, remove all bird feeders — even those advertised as “bear-proof.”

*Don’t leave birdseed outside.

*Keep trash cans stored in a garage, basement or other secured areas, if possible.

*Look into purchasing bear-proof garbage cans or garbage enclosures.

*Keep all garbage sites clean.

Bear sightings are quite normal during this time of the year when bears are starting to forage for food and look for mates. The black bear is the only species found in North Carolina and tend to be shy and non-aggressive toward humans, but if frequently fed, bears can become dependent on human food, leading to more interactions with people.

If you encounter a bear that is not aware of your presence, back away and leave the area. Give the bear plenty of room.

If you spot a bear cub, remain alert. The cub’s mother is sure to be near, state officials say.

If you meet a bear at close range, speak to it in a calm, assertive voice, wildlife experts advice, “Stay calm and do not run. Remain upright and back away from the bear. Avoid direct eye contact, which the bear may perceive as a threat.”

Oxford, Creedmoor to Hold ‘National Night Out Against Crime’ Events – Aug. 6

Granville’s “National Night Out Against Crime” will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, August 6, 2019. “National Night Out” brings the community and law enforcement together with food, fun, educational activities and demonstrations.

Oxford’s event will be held at the Masonic Home for Children, from 5 until 8 p.m. and Creedmoor’s event will be held at South Granville High School, from 6 until 9 p.m.

The Granville County Sheriff’s Office and Granville County Crime Stoppers will be participating in this annual event. Get to know your local law enforcement officers while helping make our neighborhoods a safer and more caring place to live!

Volunteers Needed for Hot Sauce Contest; Great Opportunity for Students

Volunteers are needed for the 2019 NC Hot Sauce Contest taking place in downtown Oxford on Saturday, September 14 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

This is a great opportunity for volunteers that need service hours for school (must be 16 or older) or if interested in supporting this community event. We are asking for a minimum of three-hour shifts with very specific job responsibilities!

Granville Co. Library System to End Summer Reading Program With Truck Rally

The last weekly event of Granville County Library System’s Summer Reading program is scheduled for Thursday, August  1, 2019.

Come to the Thornton Library in Oxford at 10 a.m. or the South Branch Library in Creedmoor at 2 p.m. to learn more about trucks during this community truck rally. Participants will be able to see and interact with fire trucks, garbage trucks, police vehicles, etc. Great for kids of all ages!

The area in front of Thornton Library on W. Spring St. in Oxford will be closed to traffic from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Granville Co. Sheriff’s Office Offers Back to School Safety Tips

Granville County Sheriff Brindell B. Wilkins, Jr. offers some safety tips for drivers and for students as the new school year approaches. “We can all learn from the safety tips below and abide by them to make Granville County safer for everyone,” Sheriff Wilkins said.

Drivers should:

  • Remember to not block crosswalks and to yield to pedestrians, taking extra care in school zones;
  • Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians;
  • Never pass a bus loading or unloading children;
  • Stop far enough behind a stopped school bus to allow students to safely enter and exit the bus, remembering that the area ten feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children.

Students walking to school should:

  • Always travel with a friend – two heads are better than one, especially if there’s an emergency;
  • Remember that a stranger is anyone you or your parents don’t know well;
  • Never get close to a car driven by a stranger. You could get pulled in. And never get in the car;
  • Never tell anyone your name or address when you’re walking. Don’t think that because someone knows your name that they know you – they may just be looking at your name printed on your lunch box, school bag or tee-shirt;
  • Always tell your parents or teacher if a stranger has approached you.

Those riding bikes should:

  • Know the rules of the road. Ride single file on the right side of the road, come to a complete stop before crossing the street and walk the bike across;
  • Watch for the opening of car doors and other hazards;
  • Use hand signals when turning;
  • Wear bright-colored clothing;
  • Always wear a helmet that is fitted and secured properly.

“By taking the time to carefully prepare for these situations, we can ensure student safety, whether on the way to school or home, playing on a playground or riding bikes,” Sheriff Wilkins concludes. “Let’s have a safe start to the new school year.”

Contributions of school supplies are now being accepted at the Granville County Sheriff’s Office, located at 143 Williamsboro Street in Oxford. Donated items will be delivered to local classroom teachers before the first day of the new school year. For more information about this project, call 919-693-3213.

Permanent Street Closure in Granville County

The N.C. Department of Transportation will close Pine Street at West Lake Road beginning at 7 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2019. This permanent closure is part of the realignment of N.C. 56.

An NCDOT contractor will be constructing a cul-de-sac. Driveway access will be maintained for residents during construction.

Motorists should use North Durham Avenue and turn left onto Sunset Road to get to Pine Street.

GRANVILLE COUNTY CRIME STOPPERS NEEDS YOU!

Sometime between Sunday, July 14 and Monday, July 15, 2019, an unknown person(s) unlawfully went upon private property off Antler Way Lane in Creedmoor and removed items from a work truck.

Stolen were one Husqvarna 395XP, one Husqvarna 372XP with 16-20″ bar, one Stihl MS200 and one Stihl MS261 16-20″ bar chainsaws.
