The Granville County Board of Education will meet for a regular board meeting on Monday, November 4, 2019, at 6 p.m. at the Granville County Public Schools Central Office, 101 Delacroix Street, Oxford, North Carolina.

The Board will also meet in a Closed Session with the Board’s attorney in accordance with N.C. General Statute 143.318.11 (a)(6), 143-318.11 (a)(3), 143.318.11 (a)(5) and Section 115C-321 on this evening.

Brides on Wheels (BOWs) Interest Meeting Scheduled

An interest meeting for local wedding vendors is scheduled for Sunday, November 10 from 1 until 5 p.m. through the Granville County Tourism Development Authority (TDA). Participants will have an opportunity to network as they learn more about the annual “Brides on Wheels” (BOWs) tour, now entering its third season.

The meeting will include a visit to a new wedding venue in Oxford, Shadowing Oaks, located on John Watkins Road. Those in attendance can sample refreshments from area wedding vendors, with a presentation scheduled for 3 p.m. to share information about the BOWs tour which will take place next spring.

Also discussed will be another marketing opportunity, participation in the “Forever Bridal Show” in Raleigh, scheduled for January 2020.

“We want to ensure that the BOWs tour grows and will be a successful event for venues and wedding vendors in Granville and surrounding areas,” said Angela Allen, TDA Director. “This meeting will not only offer a chance to network with other vendors but is a great way to learn more about avenues for marketing and for showcasing Granville County as a choice wedding location.”

Town Talk 10/30/19: Tourism Director Talks Halloween Fun in Granville

Angela Allen, director of the Granville County Tourism Development Authority, was on Wednesday’s edition of WIZS’ Town Talk to discuss Halloween happenings in the area.

“We are going out of October and heading into November with a bang,” Allen said. Halloween events include:

  • Downtown Oxford’s Spooktacular Candy Stroll trick-or-treat event Friday, November 1, 2019, from 3:30 – 5 p.m. Trick-or-treat was moved from its original date of Thursday, October 31 due to rainy weather forecasts.
  • Downtown Creedmoor Trick-or-Treating will be held Thursday, October 31 from 6 until 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Creedmoor Police Department and downtown merchants.
  • Covenant Life Church will hold Trunk-or-Treat at Butner Athletic Park from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 31. The park is located at 1105 West B Street in Butner, NC. This event is open to the public.
  • The Granville Haunt Farm will be open on Halloween from dusk until 9:30 p.m. Activities include a corn maze, haunted trail, zombie paintball and an escape room. This weekend is the last weekend of the season. The farm is located at 4534 US-15 in Oxford, NC.

These are just a few of the many Halloween activities taking place in Granville County. With inclement weather forecasted, it is recommended that you check to see if events have been rescheduled or canceled before heading out tomorrow.

Granville Co. Public Schools to Hold Safety Summit; Offers Online Survey

Granville County Public Schools invites you to a School Safety Summit to be held on Thursday, November 7, 2019, at 6 p.m. in the South Granville High School Auditorium.

NC Coop. Extension to Hold Chainsaw Safety Workshop

While chainsaws are a valuable and important tool for farmers and woodland owners, they expose the operator to significant hazards. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, hospital emergency departments treat about 36,000 people annually for injuries related to chainsaw use.

In order to help users better understand and manage the risks, the NC Forest Service and NC Cooperative Extension have partnered to offer a chainsaw safety workshop on Friday, November 15, 2019. The event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Granville Expo Center near Oxford and will feature classroom instruction as well as live demonstrations.

This workshop is designed to provide a basic level of safety instruction to farmers and woodland owners who may be using a chainsaw for general farm and woodland maintenance.

The Granville Expo Center is located at 4185 Highway 15, which is just south of Oxford (take exit 215 off of I-85 and head south).

Mark Your Calendar: Granville’s Annual Fall Clean Out Scheduled for Nov. 16

On Saturday, November 16, Granville County residents will have an opportunity to bring recyclable and hazardous household items to the Expo and Convention Center in Oxford as the annual Fall Clean Out Recycle and Collection Event is held from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.

On site will be environmental businesses, agencies and organizations that will collect household materials for either disposal or recycling. Items such as paint, scrap metal, pesticides, batteries, outdated prescriptions and other items will be collected from participants that include Veolia, the N.C. Department of Agriculture, TT&E Metals, Shred Ace, Interstate Batteries and the Granville County Sheriff’s Office.

  • Veolia – will be accepting paint, paint-related materials, household cleaners, old gasoline, drain cleaners, fluorescent light tubes, etc.;
  • The N.C. Department of Agriculture – will be collecting pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, weed killers, etc;
  • TT&E Metals – will be accepting scrap metal, junk lawnmowers, broken appliances, used bicycles, metal furniture;
  • Shred Ace – will be offering secure document shredding;
  • Interstate Batteries – will be accepting car batteries, motorcycle and boat batteries, household batteries, lithium batteries, ion batteries, hearing aid batteries, watch batteries, etc.; and
  • The Granville County Sheriff’s Office – will be collecting unused/expired prescriptions and medications, inhalers, sharps, diabetic supplies, ammunition, flares and fireworks.

Residents are also encouraged to bring outdated computers, laptops, telephones and other items and devices for electronic recycling.

Also on hand will be the Granville County Humane Society, which will accept donations of pet supplies, dog and cat food, leashes, collars, crates, pet beds, kitty litter, towels and other needed items.

The Nov. 16 date marks the conclusion of Granville County’s participation in the “Recycle Right NC” campaign, which was launched in September to make residents all over North Carolina more aware of the importance of recycling and to reduce contaminants in the recycle stream. This ten-week campaign ends on America Recycles Day, which will be observed on Nov. 15.

Granville Little Theatre to Present Dinner, Staged Reading of ‘War of the Worlds’

Granville Little Theatre will present a staged reading of Orson Welles’ famous radio drama “War of the Worlds” at Tobacco Wood Brewing Company on Tuesday, October 29, 2019. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $25 and include the show and a delicious buffet meal provided by Tobacco Wood.

Tickets for the meal/show combo can be purchased at www.granvillelittletheatre.net until late Friday evening, October 25.

SHOW ONLY tickets will be available at the door the night of the show for a reduced price of $10.

Proceeds to benefit Granville Little Theatre.

Oxford Prep School

Oxford Prep Readies for K-4 Expansion, 2020/2021 Open Enrollment

Applications for new Kindergarten – 12th-grade student enrollments for Oxford Preparatory School’s (OPS) 2020 – 2021 school year will be available at oxfordprep.org when Open Enrollment begins on December 2, 2019.

OPS is an independent and tuition-free public charter school that is designed to mold students into future leaders through the completion of a rigorous curriculum while focusing on community service and developing an appreciation of the arts.

To be considered for a potential lottery, all applications must be submitted online by Friday, February 28, 2020. If more applications are received than available seats in any grade, a blind public lottery will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2020.

All students choosing to attend OPS will need to confirm enrollment by completing and sending in an enrollment packet by Wednesday, April 1, 2020. After February 28, applications received will be placed at the end of the waiting list as determined by the lottery.

OPS offers a college preparatory curriculum, a variety of competitive middle school and varsity athletic teams, and has a main campus located at 6041 Landis Rd. in Oxford. The school currently operates in a permanent Upper School Building (Grades 7 – 12) and a temporary Lower School Building (Grades 5 & 6) on the main campus.

The school is in the final stages of USDA loan approval for a new permanent lower school facility (K – 6) that will be constructed on the main campus on Landis Rd. in Oxford. However, in the interim, OPS has submitted a request to Granville County Public Schools to operate K – 4  at the former Joe-Toler Oak Hill Elementary School site (8176 NC-96, Oxford, NC 27565), to which shuttle busing will be provided from the main campus on Landis Rd.

This potential agreement, governed by NC Law (§ 115C-218.35. ) would benefit Granville County Public Schools by reducing their operating costs for a closed school building and provide OPS the additional space for the increased enrollment that was approved by the NC State Board of Education in February.

OPS invites families of prospective students to learn more about the unique offerings of the school. All prospective families are invited to the school’s first Winter Wonderland on Saturday, December 7 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. The event will provide interested families a glimpse into the curriculum and vision of the Lower School while offering children a variety of fun activities coordinated by the school’s Interact Club.

The first information session for families of rising K – 6 students will be held on Tuesday, December 10 at 6 p.m. Afterwards, tours will be conducted that will allow the opportunity to meet faculty.

In addition, prospective students are invited to spend time visiting the school on three Shadow Days so they can experience our unique school program firsthand. Visiting students accompany OPS student guides through their classes during a four-hour visit. It’s a chance to meet the staff and the students and to get a snapshot view of our engaging college preparatory classes. Granville Chamber’s ‘Cluck ‘N Shuck’ Postponed Until Spring

Late last week, the Granville County Chamber of Commerce’s Executive Committee was notified by the event chairman of their annual Cluck ‘N Shuck event that the event caterer had contacted him regarding the very limited supply of oysters.

The recent storms in the Gulf and Atlantic have drastically limited the availability of fresh oysters. All oyster bottoms are closed in North Carolina, and all of the Gulf oysters have been drenched as a result of wind from storms. The water is too fresh, and the bottoms are closed.

Rather than move forward with an alternate menu for the Friday, October 25 Cluck ‘N Shuck event, the Chamber’s Executive Committee thought it prudent to postpone the event until spring.

The new date for Cluck ‘N Shuck is being planned for March 2020.

Ticket holders for the October 25, 2019, event may return their tickets to the 124 Hillsboro St., Oxford Chamber office for a full refund of the purchase price or they may retain and use their tickets in the spring of 2020.
