Oxford Prep Competes in Men’s Golf Championship

The Griffin Golf Team of Oxford Preparatory School (OPS) competed for the third time in as many years at the NCHSAA 1A Men’s Golf Championship at Foxfire Golf & Resort (Red) on May 7th and 8th. After the final day of competition, Oxford Prep finished #8 out of 12 teams with a two day total of 737, improving the day 1 score by 23 strokes.

Sophomore Wesley Aitken finished tied for 13th place adding a second round score of 82 to his Day 1 round of 83. Junior Jacob Bliss finished in a tie for 21st improving his day 1 score of 90 by 7 strokes for an 83 and a two day total of 173.

Rounding out the OPS team, Junior Adam Sizemore finished tied for 67 with a 2-day score of 201; Capers Pendergrass finished in 77th with a 2-day 216.

Senior Christian Furr, who broke his ankle just before the season began, returned to play six weeks later in the last few matches of the season and earned his way into the Regional and State competitions. Furr managed a 63rd place finish with a total score of 198 in his final high school golf match. Full field results may be viewed by clicking here.

Oxford Prep Girls Track Team NCAC Conference Champs

The Oxford Preparatory Girls track team won the 2018 NCAC Conference Championship in their first year of competition. Competing with only six girls, the Griffins won the meet against track powerhouses Franklin Academy and Voyager Academy.

Coach Patricia Lyons stated, “I explained before the meet what had to take place for us to win. They all assured me that whatever event they needed to do they would try it. Every girl placed in the top three in all the field events which propelled us to win the championship.”

The Griffins now have their sights set on the NCHSSA Mideast Regional at Pender High School in Burgaw, N.C. on Saturday, May 12, 2018.

Oxford Preparatory School Celebrates College Signing Day

On Friday, May 4, 2018, Oxford Preparatory School celebrated College Signing Day. The school is proud to announce that 94% of Oxford Prep students have been accepted by a four-year college or university and 67% have made the commitment to attend the four-year college of their choice.

As a symbol of that commitment, OPS Griffins participated in a signing ceremony that was attended by the entire student body, faculty and families.

Students committed to further pursue their education at a four-year university include:

Granville County Budget Work Sessions – May 15 & 24

BUDGET WORK SESSIONS 2018

The Granville County budget work sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at 10 a.m. and Thursday, May 24, 2018, at 4 p.m. at the Granville Expo Center located at 4185 Highway 15 South in Oxford.

Oxford Board of Commissioners Meeting – Tues., May 8

The City of Oxford Board of Commissioners will hold their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at 7 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Board Room, City Hall.

Among the agenda items:

Public Hearing to receive citizen comments about a possible Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application that must be submitted by the City to the NC Department of Environmental Quality (DEO), Division of Water Infrastructure (DWI) and/or the NC Department of Commerce – Rural Development Division (RDD).

Consider calling a public hearing for the June 12, 2018, meeting for a rezoning request from Attorney James C. Wrenn Jr. on behalf of HEW Rental, LLS requesting to rezone 4.8 +/- acres of land from B-2 (Hwy Business) to I-2 (General Industry) located at 322 Lewis Street.

Receive 2018-2019 FY budget from City Manager Alan Thornton.

Consider calling for a public hearing for the June 12, 2018, meeting to hear public input on the FY 2018-2019 budget.

Consider changing the current park operational hours which are different at each park and in some cases, not posted for the public to view. Establishing hours of use and posting them at each site will help keep the parks safe and the Oxford Police Department to enforce rules regarding after-hours use.

Consider authorizing the City Manager to sign Task Orders with McGill Associates for the 2018 Water & Sewer Improvement projects that the City received funding for from the Division of Water Infrastructure in March 2018.

Creedmoor Elementary to Celebrate Walk to School Day, Volunteers Needed

Creedmoor Elementary School will join schools around the world to celebrate Walk to School Day on Wednesday, May 9, 2018! The event is organized in conjunction with the City of Creedmoor, the Creedmoor Police Department, Granville-Vance Public Health Department and Granville Greenways.

Students from Creedmoor Elementary School will walk to school along with parents, teachers and community leaders. The event will last from 6:45 – 7:45 a.m.

Students will arrive by bus or parent drop-off at Creedmoor Gymnasium & Activity Center, 108 E. Wilton Ave. They will then walk to school, using city sidewalks and crosswalks. Volunteers will help direct the flow of children and keep them on the sidewalks.

Granville Co. Chamber of Commerce Hosting 5th Annual Golf Tournament

The Granville County Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 5th Annual Golf Tournament Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Henderson Country Club, 300 Country Club Drive, Henderson. Registration will begin at 12 noon, with a 1 p.m. shotgun start for the 4-man Captain’s Choice tournament.

Corporate sponsorships of $450 offer a hole sponsorship and a 4-man team. Hole sponsors are $100, and individual players pay $100 to play. All players receive 18 holes of golf w/cart, dinner and concessions. Mulligans and tee busters will be $10 per player.

There will be contests for a 50/50 raffle, closest to the pin challenge, longest drive and hole-in-one shootout.  Prizes and participant goodie bags are being provided by local Chamber members. Volunteers are needed throughout the afternoon of June 7, beginning at 12 noon. Time slots are 12 noon – 2:30 p.m. and 2:30 – 5 p.m. Come enjoy the afternoon with golfers, Henderson Country Club staff and other volunteers for the Chamber’s fifth annual event.
