NEED ASSISTANCE WITH TAXES? If you are a senior age 60+ and a Granville County resident, representatives of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program are now available at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford. Volunteers will be on hand from 5 until 8 p.m. each Thursday until April 9 for this free assistance program. Appointments are required. LINE DANCING IS BACK at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford. Classes are offered each Saturday during the month of February through the Creative Lifelong Learning (CLL) program and are scheduled for 10 and 11 a.m. You don’t have to be a “senior” to participate! BEGINNING COMPUTER SKILLS CLASSES are being offered at the Richard H. Thornton Library. LEARN TO REPAIR YOUR OWN JEWELRY with instructor Linda Strother as a Jewelry Repair class is offered at the Granville County Senior Center. BEEN MARRIED FOR 50 YEARS OR MORE? Join the fun on Feb. 12 as the Granville County Senior Center partners with the Granville County Library System to present the “Not-So-Newlywed” Game. Eight local couples will compete for prizes as they see how much they know about their spouse. If interested in participating, contact Angela Wright at 919-693-1930. This event is open to the public and begins at 6 p.m.

A CRICUT WORKSHOP will be held at each branch of the Granville County Library System as participants (age 18+) learn to make their own leather earrings. Sessions will be held at the South Branch Library in Creedmoor (Feb. 12 at 2 p.m.), at the Stovall Library (Feb. 19 at 2 p.m.), at the Thornton Library (Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.) and the Berea Branch (Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.) Supplies will be provided and registration is not required. Registration is not required and basic device skill is recommended. The Richard H. Thornton Library is located at 210 Main Street and the session will be held at 10 a.m.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE 2020 CENSUS can be answered in a Feb. 19 program provided by Census Representative Kathy Dunton. Dunton will be available at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford at 11 a.m. for a discussion of why the Census is important, how data results are used and other pertinent information about this once-every-decade event. Raccoon Found in Butner Area Tests Positive for Rabies

Granville County Animal Control was notified on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, of a suspicious raccoon in Twin Circles, Butner. The animal was tested for rabies, with positive results just reported.

Animal Control Officers have been working to notify residents in that area and the surrounding vicinity and offer a reminder that the best method to protect your pets from rabies is to have them vaccinated and to keep their shots current. North Carolina law also mandates that all owned dogs, cats and ferrets over four months of age should be vaccinated.

The Granville County Animal Shelter, located at 5650 Cornwall Road in Oxford, provides vaccinations for dogs and cats Monday through Friday of each week from noon until 4:30 p.m. The cost is only $6 per animal. Please call the Shelter at 919-693-6749 with any questions.

Granville Vendors Invited to Participate in 2020 ‘Brides on Wheels’

Granville County vendors are invited to participate in the 2020 “Brides on Wheels” Bridal Tour and Vendor Show, scheduled for April 19. Brides planning a 2020-2021 wedding will be taking a scenic tour on the “Bridal Bus” to learn more about wedding locations and resources available to help plan the “perfect” event.

The day includes a stop at four wedding/reception venues, as well as early access to a brand new venue, The Orpheum at Oxford, located in downtown Oxford. Florists, photographers, caterers, event planners, disc jockeys, rental companies, etc. will be set up to welcome the new brides at this venue throughout the bridal tour – to display a variety of wedding service options.

Vendors interested in participating in this show – a special feature of the “Brides on Wheels” Bridal Tour – are requested to register by Feb. 15. Space is limited, with first priority being given to Granville-based vendors. After Feb. 15, vendors outside of Granville County will be able to sign up to participate, depending on space limitations and availability.

Sponsorships for the Vendor Show are also available, as well as opportunities to distribute items to future bridal couples in “goodie bags” that will be given out to all who participate in the Bridal Tour.

Senior Games Registration Forms Now Available, Due Feb. 28

Region K Senior Games are set to begin on Friday, March 27, 2020. Athletic events are scheduled during the months of April and May and will include tennis, horseshoes, shuffleboard, golf, bowling, track/field and many other contests. Games are open to any adult age 50+ in Granville, Franklin, Person, Vance and Warren Counties.

Registration forms are now available at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford (107 Lanier Street), the North Granville Senior Center in Stovall (318 Highway 15 South), the temporary location of the South Granville Senior Center in Creedmoor (2539 Sam Moss Hayes Road) and the City of Oxford’s Parks and Recreation Department (Hix Gym, next to City Hall). The registration deadline is February 28.

This year’s Senior Games will open in Warren County and will conclude at the National Guard Armory in Louisburg on May 27. Closing events include the 2020 SilverArts Showcase, hosted by Franklin County, and the Senior Games Awards Ceremony.

“MY FORMER LIFE,” a program offered through Granville County Senior Services’ Creative Lifelong Learning (CLL) program, continues on Friday, Jan. 31 with guest speaker Tyson Laney, who will share his life experiences as a Vietnam Combat Veteran, N.C. Wildlife Officer, private investigator and musician. He may even share a song or two! This FREE program is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Granville County Senior Center, 107 Lanier Street in Oxford. ADULT CRAFTERNOONS will be held at all branches of the Granville County Library System in February as participants learn to make wax melts. Dr. Jason Miller will follow on Feb. 16 with a discussion of his new novel “Langston Hughes,” which provides insight on Hughes’ works, as well as his influence on the Civil Rights movement. Yancey Shares Family’s Cancer Journey With New Book

Granville County’s own Brenda Yancey is the first author scheduled for a series of book discussions at the Richard H. Thornton Library in Oxford during the month of February. This book signing and special program will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 1.

Yancey’s book, “After Cancer: A Family’s Journey to Normalcy,” describes how her family depended on their faith to guide them through one of the darkest times in their lives. After her husband Larry received a diagnosis of stage 4 cancer in 2008, the Yanceys’ world was turned upside down. The life her family once knew, she said, was over – and a “new normal” was expected as family members struggled to accept the diagnosis and the impact it made on each of their lives.

“Every person has to make the decision to do what he (or she) feels is best, and what they feel God is leading them to do,” Yancey says in her book. “Every person is different, and each has to do what it takes to handle the situation.”

When the couple received the diagnosis of Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Yancey describes their reaction on hearing the news. While she fought back tears she had promised would not come, her husband was quiet as he carefully listened. “Okay,” she wrote. “We are going to trust God and take him at his Word.”

Through this newly-released book, Yancey tells the touching story of the support of her close-knit family and friends, the perseverance of her husband as he fought his battle with cancer and survived, and the choices she had to make concerning her own health. The book was written, she says, to encourage and help build up the faith of others who may be facing their own health battles. On Saturday, she will be sharing her own family’s experiences and signing copies of her work after the discussion.

“Life is good for us because we wake up every morning having a new appreciation for life,” she concludes. “When you come out of an experience like this, you see life totally different, and you understand that life is precious.”

A second local author discussion is scheduled for Saturday, February 16 with special guest Dr. Jason Miller. Miller will be introducing his latest novel, “Langston Hughes,” and will be providing insight into Hughes’ life as the first black author in America. This program will also begin at 2 p.m.

The Richard H. Thornton Library is located at 210 Main Street in Oxford and is one of four branches of the Granville County Library System. Rabid Animal Reported; Second Confirmation This Year

This year’s second instance of rabies has been reported in Granville County. A raccoon was picked up on January 17, 2020, in the area of St. Lucy Drive and N.C. Hwy. 96 South, Franklinton, with follow-up tests confirming that the raccoon was rabid. Residents of the area are being notified of the positive test results.

Granville County Animal Control advises all residents to ensure their pets have up-to-date rabies vaccinations, as required by North Carolina law (NCGS 130A-185). One-year vaccinations are provided for only $6 at the Granville County Animal Shelter, located at 5650 Cornwall Road in Oxford. Hours for vaccinations are Monday through Friday from noon until 4:30 p.m.

2020 Coggin’s Clinics for Horse Owners Scheduled

NC Cooperative Extension, Granville County Center, has scheduled two Coggin’s Clinics for horse owners. Horses that are taken off the farm to events such as horse shows or trail rides, or even for pleasure riding off the farm, should be tested for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA). The Coggins Clinics offer this test at a reduced rate for horse owners.

Testing in February will allow time for horse owners to get their negative test results back before the season for trail rides and horse shows begins.

Dates and times for the clinics are:

Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 21, 2020, 1 to 4 p.m.

Both clinics will be held at Southern States Cooperative, located at 607 Hillsboro Street in Oxford. Those interested should turn into the west end of the store parking lot, cross the railroad tracks and proceed to the bulk storage area, where they will see the clinic set up and a circular drive which will make it easy to get in and out.

Vaccinations for East/West Equine Encephalitis, Flu/Rhinovirus, Rabies, West Nile Virus and other diseases are also available for a fee. Horse owners should consult with a veterinarian for recommended vaccinations.

Granville Administrative Office Offers Proper U.S. Flag Disposal

With a brand new year just starting, is it time to replace your old, worn-out American flag? Bring your old one to Granville County’s official flag receptacle, located in the Granville County Administrative Office on Williamsboro Street in Oxford, for proper disposal.

Offices are open from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
