Sossamon Requests Hand-To-Eye Recount In District 32 Contest

After the initial machine recount, Republican candidate Frank Sossamon trails Democratic candidate Bryan Cohn by 228 votes, 21,215 to 20,987. State law permits a candidate to request a sample hand-to-eye recount within 24 hours after the initial recount. Sossamon requested the recount.

The State Board conducted a random drawing at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2 to determine the Election Day precincts or early voting sites that will be recounted by hand in Granville and Vance counties.

The Vance County Board of Elections will conduct its hand recount starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the Henry A. Dennis Building, 300 S. Garnett St.

The Granville County Board of Elections will conduct its hand recount in the sample of precincts starting at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the Granville County Board of Elections, 208 Wall St., Oxford.

Granville Board of Elections Hosting Regional Mandatory Compliance Training

The Granville County Board of Elections will be hosting a Regional Mandatory Compliance Training Class on Wednesday, January 22, 2020, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Granville County Expo and Convention Center meeting room located at 4185 US Hwy 15 South, Oxford, NC.

It is not being held at the Richard H. Thornton Library as listed in the State and Regional Training Schedule.

The State Board of Elections staff will be conducting the training. Any candidate or treasurer in Granville County or from any other North Carolina county can attend this training.

Pursuant to North Carolina law, training is required within three months of appointment and once every four years thereafter for all NC Treasurers, including those under the $1,000 threshold.

Please note that this training is for NC Candidate, Party and Referendum Committee Treasurers and/or candidates. This training is not for PACS or Independent Expenditure Committees.

Filing Period for 11 Granville County Seats Now in Progress

The Granville County Board of Elections has announced that the filing period for 11 seats for the 2020 election is now in progress. Local offices up for election include County Commissioner seats for Districts 1, 3, 4 and 5; Board of Election seats for Districts 1, 2 and 6; and Register of Deeds.

Seats for N.C. House District 2 and 32, as well as N.C. Senate District 22, are also up for election.

Interested candidates must file before Friday, December 20 at noon.

One-Stop Early Voting for Granville Municipalities Begins Tomorrow

One-Stop Early Voting for the City of Creedmoor, City of Oxford, Town of Butner, Town of Stem and Town of Stovall non-partisan elections will be available Wednesday, October 16 – Friday, November 1, 2019.

Polls will also be open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. on election day – Tuesday, November 5, 2019.

Early voting will be held at the Richard H. Thornton Library in Oxford (in lieu of the Board of Elections office) and at the South Branch Library in Creedmoor on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, October 16 – 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Thursday, October 17 – 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Friday, October 18 – 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Monday, October 21 – 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Tuesday, October 22 – 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Wednesday, October 23 – 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Notice: Voting Precinct Changes for Stem & Stovall, NC

Voters who reside in the Town of Stem should note that starting with the Nov. 5, 2019 election, the voting precinct has changed for all future elections. The new voting site will be Granville Central High School, located at 2043 Sanders Road in Stem. This site has changed from the Stem Fire Station.

On Aug. 14, 2018, the Town of Stovall adopted a resolution to rescind the previous resolution that authorized Absentee Voting for municipal elections. All voting which occurs prior to Election Day is considered Absentee Voting under North Carolina law. This includes Absentee By Mail and One-Stop Early Voting.

Due to this resolution, starting in 2019, ballots for future Town of Stovall Municipal Elections will only be available to voters on Election Day. Effective with the Nov. 5, 2019, Municipal Election, voters who reside in the Town of Stovall can only vote at their precinct on Election Day. They cannot vote by mail or at a One-Stop site. 

In addition, the precinct for Stovall voters is being changed for all future elections, starting with the Nov. 5, 2019, Municipal Election. Voters will no longer vote at Stovall-Shaw Elementary School. but will now vote at the Stovall Library Conference Room, located at 300 Main Street in Stovall.
