Students At 3 VCS Campuses Start A New School Year

Students headed back to class Monday in three Vance County Schools – getting the 2023-24 school year off to a good start with smiles, high fives and lots of excitement.

The first day of class at E.M. Rollins STEAM Academy, Vance County Early College and Vance County High School began without a hitch, and VCS Chief Communication Officer Aarika Sandlin stated that teachers and staff are ready to educate students and empower them to engage in opportunities and experiences, taking learning to the next level.

The annual back-to-school convocation for all staff is scheduled for Aug. 22 at McGregor Hall in advance of the Aug. 28 start date for all traditional calendar schools in the district.

E.M. Rollins to host “Back to School Bash”

Families are invited to attend the E.M. Rollins Elementary School “Back to School Bash” on Saturday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the grounds of the school.

The “Bash” will include music, dancers, a bounce house, face painting, free food and drinks and school supply giveaways. The event is free for registered E.M. Rollins families and $3 per person for other guests.

Several vendors will be on hand to provide fun activities for all family members and important back-to-school information. The vendors include: the Henderson Family YMCA with information on the STRIDE program for boys and Girls on the Run program; Vance County 4-H; Henderson Fire Department; Midnight Blue Martial Arts; Ballet Arts; Boho the Clown; West End Baptist Church JOY Club; and Clearview Church.

Info Sessions to be held for new STEAM Academy at E.M. Rollins

Parents and students can learn more about the new STEAM Academy at E.M. Rollins Elementary for the 2017-2018 school year during meetings scheduled for Monday, July 10, and Thursday, July 13, at Perry Memorial Library on Breckenridge Street in Henderson.

Both meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be led by Principal Stephanie Alston.

Enrollment is still open for the new year to elementary students throughout Vance County. Plan to attend one of these meetings to learn how to submit an application during open enrollment.

E.M. Rollins Prepares for Students as a Year-Round School

Construction and cleaning crews are busy in June preparing E.M. Rollins Elementary for its first year-round school year for 2017-2018.

Teachers begin work on July 17 and students start classes for the new year on August 1.

Work is ongoing to replace the heating and air-conditioning systems throughout the school. The school’s music room is being completely rrefurbished. State-of-the-art technology will be included in classrooms throughout the school.

E.M. Rollins educators and support staff members will be ready on the first day of classes to provide students with comprehensive STEAM instruction. That involves project-based learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.

E.M. Rollins will be a leader among Vance County Schools in providing music, band, art, drama and more enrichment instruction in the arts to its students.

The school will serve students from throughout Vance County in pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade. The school year will include four nine-week sessions for instruction for students. Each nine week session will be followed by a three-week break for students. The students at E.M. Rollins will have their holiday breaks at the same time as students in other local schools.

E.M. Rollins is “Inspiring the Future” and is promoting its new STEAM focus as an educational approach that is “Different by Design.”

Vance County Schools Bus Driver Places 7th at NC School Bus Roadeo

Keith Purnell, a school bus driver for Northern Vance High School and E.M. Rollins Elementary School, placed seventh in the state in the annual N.C. School Bus Roadeo held in Raleigh on May 25.

He was among 29 of the state’s best school bus drivers who navigated a yellow school bus through an obstacle course that tested their skills in mastering a diminishing clearance, backing, making a tight turn and parallel parking.

The competing drivers had to place among the best in their school district’s roadeo and in regional competition to reach the state finals.

The N.C. School Bus Roadeo was held on the N.C. State Fairgrounds.

E.M. Rollins Student Council Raises $3,000 for Rise Against Hunger

The Student Council of E. M. Rollins Elementary, under the direction of Antoinette Ball, a teacher and Student Council adviser, spearheaded a year-long service project which raised over $3,000. The proceeds were donated to Rise Against Hunger, a non-profit humanitarian relief organization headquartered in Raleigh.

The partnership with Rise Against Hunger was the result of students wanting to learn by doing and wanting to demonstrate service leadership.

The project ended with the finale of a “Meal Packaging” event on May 20 in which over 10,000 meals were packaged with the help of over 80 volunteers from the Henderson and Vance County community. These packaged meals will be sent globally to help stop world hunger.

E.M. Rollins becomes first year-round school in Vance County

The Vance County Board of Education at its meeting on Monday, April 17, approved the year-round calendar for the 2017-2018 school year for E.M. Rollins Elementary School, which has been designated as a restart school by the state.

E.M. Rollins will begin the new school year as a STEAM school, with an emphasis on student instruction in the areas of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.

E.M. Rollins Elementary will be the first year-round school in the Vance County Public School System.

With the approved calendar, school staff members will begin work for the new school year on Monday, July 17. The first day of classes for students at E.M. Rollins will be Tuesday, August 1.

The calendar will follow the basic format of students attending school for 45-day periods (nine weeks) and then having 15 days (three weeks) as a break after each nine weeks through the year.

The school will still observe all designated state holidays, as do our other local schools. The school’s Thanksgiving break will include Wednesday, November 22, as a non-student day and Thursday, November 23-Friday, November 24 as holidays.

Christmas break will be Monday, December 18-Friday, January 5. Their spring break will be observed during one of the school’s three-week breaks, Monday, March 19-Friday, April 6.

The last day of school for the 2017-2018 school year at E.M. Rollins Elementary will be Friday, June 22.

E.M. Rollins Teachers Get CenturyLink Grant

Regina Hilliard and Faye Crawford, two second-grade teachers at E.M. Rollins Elementary School, today were awarded a $5,000 technology grant from CenturyLink.
Hilliard and Crawford submitted their grant request a couple of months ago through the CenturyLink technology grant program.
They plan to purchase a variety of technology devices, including iPads, and software for their students with the grant funding.
Several CenturyLink representatives were on hand at the school this morning to make the grant presentation. Derek Kelly, a legislative affairs manager with CenturyLink, and Larry Mathiot, area public relations representative for CenturyLink, led the presentation.

Northern Vance students visit E.M. Rollins to help younger counterparts

Northern Vance High School students visited on March 22 with students and teachers at E.M. Rollins Elementary School to lend a helping hand with reading, math and even recess.

The high school students are positive role models for their younger counterparts.

The Northern Vance students went in to all classrooms at E.M. Rollins, with the exception of the pre-kindergarten classes. They read books with the elementary students, talked about their favorite types of books and worked with them on math practice sheets, among other activities.

The special day was a partnership effort by administrators and teachers from the two schools. Many of the Northern Vance students attended E.M. Rollins during their elementary years in school.
