SportsTalk: Trey Snide Named Cross Country Coach At Crossroads Christian

August 4, 2021/by Bill Harris

Many people know Trey Snide as the host of the “Beach Music Blast” and “SportsTalk” on WIZS Radio. Some may have bought some advertising from him. Anyone who knows Trey also knows he is a true sports fan.  What they might not know is that Trey coaches not only one team at Crossroads Christian but, now, two teams.

In addition to being the head baseball coach at the school, he has now been named head coach of the school’s cross country team. Trey brings experience from his time as a student who ran track for Lees-McRae College in the North Carolina mountains.  When asked what that experience as an athlete in college gives him as a coach he said, “Never Give up even though you may feel like passing out.”

He has his runners at Crossroads Christian up early to run. Practice currently begins at 7:30 in the morning, and while that may seem early, he says the beautiful countryside where his players practice makes it much better. “Hills, water, woods, dirt, grass…everything you would find in competition,” Trey says of the area.

Coaching cross-country is different than coaching baseball or other team sports.  Trey said it is more about the individual and finding ways for the individual to improve.

His team will have some pieces already in place with a 1A All State Runner and the team will looking to get the most from his and the other members of the team this season.  The coach in Trey says, “They may say they can’t do anymore, but as a coach, you try to get a little bit more. Give me everything you’ve got.”

WIZS congratulates our own Trey Snide, the new cross country coach at Crossroads Christian.

Crossroads Christian School’s Haley Patterson, Hope Macklin, Justice Simmons

December 14, 2020/by John C. Rose

On Friday, Dec. 11, three seniors from Crossroads Christian School, Haley Patterson, Hope Macklin, and Justice Simmons, discussed their senior season in women’s basketball and about the leadership role for female athletics.

Each Friday on WIZS SportsTalk, host Trey Snide presents the weekly Coach’s Corner segment.

Simmons said some of the new rules are weird, but “I’m pretty grateful that I still get to play basketball.”  Macklin more or less agreed and said, “It’s not the ideal situation…a lot of other schools in our area are just done with sports completely.”  Patterson said, “I feel like it’s not the situation we wanted to be in, but it still gives us an opportunity as seniors to have our last basketball season with all the girls.”

On the positive said, they indicate they have grown closer together and that there has been less pressure with no fans around.

As leaders, the hardest part for these players has been the inability to socialize out of school and the lack of drive because of the overall situation and, of course, wearing a mask while playing and practicing.

Sports Talk 12/01/20: Crossroads Christian Temporarily Halts Basketball Season

December 1, 2020/by Kelly Bondurant

With questions surrounding mask requirements for student-athletes and health concerns, the Crossroads Christian School Colts have temporarily halted the men’s basketball season.

CCS Athletic Director Scottie Richardson said the decision was based solely on what is right for the players. “The decision came down to the health of our student-athletes, period,” said Richardson. “We just don’t have enough information on the status of playing a sport like basketball and wearing masks. Instead of just allowing it without doing our due diligence of understanding the risks involved with how it couples with asthma, breathing issues, heart issues from birth, etc., we decided to pause the sport for two weeks.”

WIZS Radio · Sports Talk – Covid 19 Updates in Local Sports of Vance County 12/1/20

Richardson further explained that several players have inhalers, are diabetic or have other underlying health issues that could potentially make playing sports in a mask more difficult.

In guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the wearing of masks during athletic activities, Richardson said the agency recognizes that “masks may be challenging for players (especially younger players) to wear while playing sports” and “masks should not be placed on anyone who has trouble breathing or is unconscious.”

The North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) recently announced plans for officials to extend timeouts, quarter breaks and halftime to allow for additional recovery time for playing in masks.

Basketball activities are expected to resume at CCS on Monday, December 7, 2020, with the team spending the first week back on the court in shooting drills, walk-through drills, etc.

According to Richardson, games and full-speed practices will remain paused until more information is gathered from the NCISAA and NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS). Games canceled for COVID issues or concerns are counted as “no contests.”

Coach’s Corner 05/29/20: Crossroad Christian’s Taylor Bell Signs With Wingate University

May 29, 2020/by Kelly Bondurant

100.1 FM ~ 1450 AM ~ WIZS, Your Community Voice ~ Click to LISTEN LOCAL

Friday’s edition of the WIZS Coach’s Corner featured an interview with Crossroad Christian School’s (CCS) Taylor Bell, Colts Athletic Director and Men’s Varsity Basketball Coach Scottie Richardson and Bell’s family and basketball mentors.

Bell, a recent CCS graduate and basketball player, gathered with his supporters last Friday afternoon for a belated (thanks to COVID-19) letter signing ceremony to indicate his intent to play basketball at Wingate University.

Honing his skills at Neuse Christian Academy in Raleigh during his freshman and sophomore year, Bell joined the Colts his junior year and reunited with Richardson, who also coached Bell’s older brother Maurice Wilcox.

With impressive high school stats, including averaging 21.2 points a game and scoring over 1,000 points, Richardson said Wingate will benefit from the “legacy” Bell built at CCS.

“Wingate is getting a leader both on and off the court,” Richardson said. “Taylor has certainly left a stamp not only on our program but also on our school.”

Bell will be in good company at Wingate as close friend Kurtis Taylor, who previously played at Neuse Christian Academy, as well as Andreas Wilson, a former competitor who played at Kerr-Vance Academy, have also signed with the Bulldogs.

“My friend Kurtis got an offer early from Wingate,” Bell said. “Once they showed interest in me, I knew I wanted to have the opportunity to play with my friend again, and I wanted to work with the Wingate coaches.”

To hear more from Bell and Richardson, along with commentary from Bell’s family and mentors, please listen to the Coach’s Corner audio by clicking the play button above.

Crossroads Christian School Names January Athlete of the Month

February 2, 2017/by WIZS Staff

Congratulations to Noah Brantley, our January Athlete of the Month! The son of Patrick and Christy Brantley of Henderson, he is an 8th grader who excels both on and off the court. Noah is one of the nicest young men you will ever meet. He exemplifies what it means to be a stellar student athlete.

Noah is having a phenomenal year on the MS basketball team and is averaging double figures with respect to both points and rebounds. More impressive than this, however, is Noah’s character. He treats people with dignity, respect and kindness. He sets a great example for all those around him.
Our January Athlete of the Month goes to a great athlete (basketball and soccer) and a great young man: Mr. Noah Brantley!
