SportsTalk: Volleyball And Soccer Gets Underway At Crossroads Christian

The beginning of the school year is a busy time not only for students and teachers but for athletic departments as well.  Just ask Crossroads Christian Athletic Director Scottie Richardson.  “We are wide open. We have open house on Monday and school starts on Wednesday,” said Richardson.

Teams are already practicing and preparing for season openers.  The school’s three volleyball teams open at home on Thursday, August 17th against Thales-Apex and soccer will start on Friday, August 18th with a home game against Franklinton.

Holden Coghill, soccer coach at Crossroads, took the team to the final four last year and were ranked #1 all season. “The team got caught up in the hype,” Richardson said but he sees a different mentality this year and with most of the team returning he thinks they will be better prepared to handle the success.  He said the numbers of students that have turned out this year for athletics has been great.

SportsTalk: Thorpe Surpasses The 1000 Points Mark

One thousand points is a lot in the game of basketball and to achieve that level is a significant accomplishment, one that Israel Thorpe should be proud of.  The senior Crossroads Christian point guard has now done that but she wasn’t aware of the milestone until her coach, Cammy Simmons, called a time out after her 1000th point. “I was focused on the game,” Thorpe said on Thursday’s SportsTalk.  “The students were aware,” added Crossroads Athletic Director Scottie Richardson.

Her scoring milestone also points to her focus on and off the field.  She has a 3.9 gpa to go along with her skills on the court.  “If I’m not at the gym I’m doing school work,” Thorpe said.  This doesn’t leave much time for a social life. “That’s OK with me because I’m bettering my life,” Thorpe added. After this year, Thorpe will be going to Cairn University near Pittsburgh to continue her basketball career.

Crossroads, who is seeded 4th in the state playoffs, is having their most successful season of girl’s basketball in school history.  Previously the most wins had been nine but this season they have twenty-three victories and are hoping for a few more in the state playoffs. A championship to go along with the 1000 points would certainly make Thorpe’s senior year a memorable one.

 

SportsTalk: Richardson And Downey Talk Local Basketball

Scottie Richardson, head men’s basketball coach and athletic director at Crossroads Christian, and Taron Downey, head men’s basketball coach at Vance Charter School, have both seen injuries to players throughout their careers.

Both men briefly discussed their thoughts on the tragic injury to Damar Hamlin in Monday night’s NFL game. “I thought the NFL made the right decision,” Richardson said and added that Crossroads has an on site defibrillator in case there is ever a need for one.  “It was a very unfortunate and tragic situation. It’s part of the game and coaches have to deal with it as best as we can,” Downey added.

Both coaches are coming off holiday breaks at their respective schools.  According to Richardson, Crossroads men’s basketball is ranked at third in the state but will meet a big challenge Friday as they hit the road to take on the top-ranked team in state, United Faith of Charlotte. “We are not getting on the road for three hours to lose,” Richardson said. It’s the longest road trip of the year for Crossroads.  The school won on Tuesday defeating Thales Academy, but Richardson said they were sluggish during the win after the holiday break.

“We are trying to get back in the swing of things,” Downey said of Vance Charter.  They are coming off a win this week against Eno River but travel to face rival Oxford Prep Friday, who Downey says has quick guards and tenacious defense. Downey also said the game will have a great environment.  Downey feels that’s important to home teams.

SportsTalk: Scottie Richardson Previews Winter Sports At Crossroads

Scottie Richardson wears a couple of hats at Crossroads Christian. He is the men’s basketball coach but also oversees a very successful athletic program for the entire school as athletic director.  “We are coming off of the winningest fall season in the school’s history,” Richardson said on Wednesday’s SportsTalk.  From success on the volleyball court to a final four finish for the boy’s soccer team, things have been going well for Crossroads.

Winter sports are now here and Crossroads is off to a great start as both girl’s and boy’s basketball are undefeated so far this season. The boys are coming off a huge victory against crosstown rival Henderson Collegiate and are now preparing for holiday tournaments.

The Colts will be heading for Wilson for one tournament and then an MLK Event in Greene County is also upcoming.

The key to all of this success, according to Richardson, is developing younger talent and use that to build on.  The Colts certainly excel at that.  “Our middle school girl’s basketball team has not lost since 2019,” Richardson said.  With that kind of talent rising to varsity level athletics, it’s no wonder Crossroads continues to be a team opposing coaches fear when they appear on the schedule.

SportsTalk: Richardson Says Spring Sports A Success

If you see Crossroads Christian School Athletic Director/Head Basketball Coach Scottie Richardson with a smile on his face, that’s because he is happy with how spring sports have gone at the school. The Colt’s Girls Soccer team made a deep run in the playoffs and the golf team won the conference championship finishing third in the state. On top of that, five seniors who played on Crossroads Christian’s athletic teams will be moving on to play at the college level.

Under Richardson, the Colt’s athletic program has grown to 22 teams in nine sports and that includes 12 All State players in five sports.  No wonder Richardson is happy.

Next school year when Richardson puts on his basketball cap, it will mark his 28th year as a basketball coach.  Last season, Crossroads had it’s first final four post season run, and with changes in the conference, Richardson feels that the school has a real shot at a state championship, so much so that it is Richardson’s goal for the team to bring that championship home to Vance County.

SportsTalk: WIZS Player Of The Week Honors

Two young athletes are the winners of this week’s player of the week honors on WIZS. According to Cammy Simmons, Assistant Head Coach at Crossroads Christian, Abby Taylor makes everyone around her better whether that’s on the basketball or volleyball court or in the classroom. Simmons cited Taylor’s leadership abilities and her work ethic as strengths that Taylor posseses. She is our Varsity girls player of the week.

For boys varsity our player of the week is Joseph Knott, a senior at Kerr Vance Academy.  Sam Feaver, Kerr Vance Athletic Director, says Knott was the focal point of the school’s soccer team this year and lead the team in scoring. He started off the basketball season in similar fashion scoring 27 points in the opening game of the season this week against St. Thomas. Feaver says, that like Abby Taylor, Knott also possesses excellent leadership skills.

SportsTalk: Richardson Tips Off Crossroads Basketball Season Friday

Scottie Richardson has two hats. One hat is his Athletic Director’s hat and the other is his Head Basketball Coach hat.  Friday night he will be wearing his basketball hat as Crossroads Christiam kicks off the 2021 basketball season against Oxford Prep.  In his 4th year as coach Richardson says there is a system in place for the team which will have 14 players including five seniors, anchored by All State player Andreas Prince who averaged 22 points per game and made 44% of three point attempts last season. On Tuesday Crossroads will face Henderson Collegiate in a game that can be heard live on WIZS beginning immediately following the Joy Christian Center broadcast.

Richardson says that he is expecting good things from the basketball program but also praised other sports at the school, “It’s the best athletic season in school history,” Richardson stated on Thursday’s SportsTalk with Trey Snide. The school’s soccer team, which started 0-4 on the year finished the season with the most wins in school history for the program with 15. The previous record for men’s soccer was four. The soccer team finished ranked 3rd in the state losing in the final four by one point.  The cross country team, which had not had a full roster in nine years, won the state championship this season. Girls volleyball posted 10 wins this year, the most victories since 2010.

“We got the right coaches on the bus and the wrong ones off,” Richardson said of the success of the school’s athletic programs.

Congratulations to Coach Trey Snide and his Crossroads Christian School Cross Country Team!  Regular season, conference and state champions!

The State 1A meet began Friday morning at 11 o’clock in the Wilmington area.  The season of work and practice and working as a team paid off by early afternoon.

Coach Snide pulled over while driving home to appear on the 5 o’clock WIZS News.

He is, of course, no stranger to the local WIZS airwaves as the SportsTalk Host at 1 p.m. M-F, his live play by play of local sports and The Beach Music Blast program at 12 noon M-F.  This in additional to his management level position with the station.

SportsTalk: Trey Snide Named Cross Country Coach At Crossroads Christian

Many people know Trey Snide as the host of the “Beach Music Blast” and “SportsTalk” on WIZS Radio. Some may have bought some advertising from him. Anyone who knows Trey also knows he is a true sports fan.  What they might not know is that Trey coaches not only one team at Crossroads Christian but, now, two teams.

In addition to being the head baseball coach at the school, he has now been named head coach of the school’s cross country team. Trey brings experience from his time as a student who ran track for Lees-McRae College in the North Carolina mountains.  When asked what that experience as an athlete in college gives him as a coach he said, “Never Give up even though you may feel like passing out.”

He has his runners at Crossroads Christian up early to run. Practice currently begins at 7:30 in the morning, and while that may seem early, he says the beautiful countryside where his players practice makes it much better. “Hills, water, woods, dirt, grass…everything you would find in competition,” Trey says of the area.

Coaching cross-country is different than coaching baseball or other team sports.  Trey said it is more about the individual and finding ways for the individual to improve.

His team will have some pieces already in place with a 1A All State Runner and the team will looking to get the most from his and the other members of the team this season.  The coach in Trey says, “They may say they can’t do anymore, but as a coach, you try to get a little bit more. Give me everything you’ve got.”

Crossroads Christian School’s Haley Patterson, Hope Macklin, Justice Simmons

On Friday, Dec. 11, three seniors from Crossroads Christian School, Haley Patterson, Hope Macklin, and Justice Simmons, discussed their senior season in women’s basketball and about the leadership role for female athletics.

Each Friday on WIZS SportsTalk, host Trey Snide presents the weekly Coach’s Corner segment.

Simmons said some of the new rules are weird, but “I’m pretty grateful that I still get to play basketball.”  Macklin more or less agreed and said, “It’s not the ideal situation…a lot of other schools in our area are just done with sports completely.”  Patterson said, “I feel like it’s not the situation we wanted to be in, but it still gives us an opportunity as seniors to have our last basketball season with all the girls.”

On the positive said, they indicate they have grown closer together and that there has been less pressure with no fans around.

As leaders, the hardest part for these players has been the inability to socialize out of school and the lack of drive because of the overall situation and, of course, wearing a mask while playing and practicing.
