SportsTalk: Crossroads Baseball, Soccer And Golf In State Playoffs

Soccer, baseball and golf are all representing Crossroads Christian in the state playoffs, keeping Athletic Director Scottie Richardson a busy man, but he found a few minutes to talk about his teams on Wednesday’s SportsTalk.  “Our baseball team has won its first playoff game in school history and its first trip to the elite eight,” Richardson said. “We have a young team and the sky is the limit,” added Richardson.  Next up is the top seeded Lawrence Academy. “The pressure is on them,” Richardson said of Lawrenceville.

In soccer, Crossroads has also advanced to the elite eight by defeating Oakwood. They play again on Friday at Crossroads with game time at 4 p.m., weather permitting of course.  The rain has been difficult this week.  “We spent five hours to get the field ready,” Richardson said.

Richardson also is keeping his eye on the golf course where Crossroads’ Merritt Cogdill will represent the school in the state tournament Monday and Tuesday of next week in Greensboro.

SportsTalk: Crossroads Gets Ready For Tournament

Scottie Richardson has reason to be happy, back-to-back regular season championships for the Crossroads Christian boys basketball team.  Richardson, the school’s athletic director, was a guest on Wednesday’s Sportstalk, and he said, “The boys will get a bye in the first round and we will play at home at 2 p.m. Saturday.”  The opponent will be the winner of the New Garden/Halifax matchup.

Richardson is very proud of the accomplishments of his team.  “This is the third year in a row the boys team has been a top 4 seed.  “We’ve played New Garden three times this year and I think we will play them a fourth time Saturday,” Richardson added.

His girls team is also in the state tournament and plays at 6 p.m. Friday against Albemarle.  “If they win, they will play again Saturday against Ridgecroft,” Richardson said.

SportsTalk: Local Coaches Prep For Basketball Tournaments And Spring Sports

John Hammett and Scottie Richardson may be athletic directors for different schools in different counties but they are both facing the same things: a basketball season that is winding down and the start of spring sports.

Hammett, Oxford Prep’s athletic director, says his boys’ basketball team is having a real strong year despite a loss this week to Vance Charter.  “We’ve got some real good shooters,” Hammett said.  They take on Roxboro Charter Friday night. “Roxboro is young but they have a couple of good player,” Hammett said of the team’s opponent. The girls team is currently 7-9. “They have been getting better throughout the year,” said Hammett.  Oxford Prep has five games remaining before they start the conference basketball tournament.

Meanwhile, at Crossroads Christian, athletic director Scottie Richardson says his girls team will be the second seed for their upcoming tournament. The boys could be.  “We control our own destiny,” Richardson said.   It will take a few more wins in the remaining four games for Crossroads to secure that second seed.

One of the problems both men face is an overlap between basketball and baseball.  “I would like to see both basketball and baseball seasons shortened to eliminate the overlap,” Hammett said on Thursday’s SportsTalk.  Richardson said it is difficult to coordinate with coaches when players play multiple sports.

SportsTalk: Area Schools Getting Winter Sports Underway

Area schools are now getting winter sports underway.  At Vance Charter School basketball has just started, according to athletic director Lance Stallings.  They’ve only played two games this year including Wednesday’s game against Granville Central.  The boys were unable to pull out a victory but the girl’s team did.  There’s no rest either as Vance Charter will return to the court Friday taking on Falls Lake in the first home game of the season.  “Regardless of the sport or the time of the year Falls Lake is well prepared,” Stallings said.  “It’s a Green Out Game.  We will raise awareness about school violence,” Stallings added.

Meanwhile Stallings says they have approximately 10 students on this year’s swim team which has its first meet on December 7th.  Additionally, cheer leading will be headed to a competition event Saturday at the Raleigh Convention Center where they will face off against ten other area schools.

It’s much the same at Crossroads Christian as the Colts basketball teams are off to a terrific start.  The boy’s team is undefeated at 5-0 and are ranked #1 in the state and the girl’s team is 3-1 and ranked third in the state.  Alyssa Phillips leads the girls team who will play Lawrence tonight.  The boys return to action Saturday against St. Thomas with seniors Ben Gladdio and Robert Jenkins leading the way.

“If we win both games, I will have 400 career wins,” said Scottie Richardson. Richardson, in addition to his athletic director duties also coaches basketball at the school.  The Colts will also play against 11 other teams in the Battle of the Bull tournament at Falls Lake over the holidays.  Once those holidays are over spring sports will begin workouts at both Crossroads Christian and Vance Charter.

SportsTalk: Crossroads Wins Boys Soccer Championship

Since Spring of 2021 Crossroads Christian School has won five state championships. The school added their fifth last Saturday as the boy’s soccer team defeated conference rivals Bradford Academy 5-1.  “It’s boy’s soccer’s first championship,” said Crossroads AD Scottie Richardson on Wednesday’s SportsTalk.  “Holden Coghill won two games his first season and now a state championship,” added Richardson.  Coghill is the head coach at Crossroads.

Crossroads also had to face another conference rival, Cape Fear, to get to the championship game. “Familiarity with those two schools makes playing them more difficult because it’s harder to keep the kids focused,” Richardson added.  Last year Crossroads lost to Cape Fear in the semi-finals and this year Richardson was determined that would not happen this season.  To keep them focused the team spent the night in Rocky Mount where the tournament was played.  The ate meals together and Richardson said he felt that helped the team stay focused.

Crossroads will lose three seniors off of a team that lost its first game of the season and then peeled off 19 straight wins.  Congratulations to the Crossroads Christian Boy’s Soccer team for winning that state championship.

SportsTalk: Crossroads Finding Success At Multiple Sports

Last year Crossroads Christian lost in the final four of the state soccer championship but, according to Scottie Richardson, the school’s athletic director, Crossroads is will have a good shot of returning to the final four this season.  “We are ranked #1 in the state.  We lost our first game to Franklinton and haven’t lost since,” Richardson said on Wednesday’s SportsTalk.  This week they take on defending state champions Cape Fear Christian as they prepare to move into the state playoffs.

Soccer is not the only area where Crossroads is finding success.  “Cross Country has their conference tournament next week and they are looking for a three-peat,” Richardson said as the cross country team has one back to back state championships.

Volleyball is also moving towards playoff time. “It’s a tough conference and anything can happen,” Richardson said about his volleyball team.  The varsity team will travel to Lee Christian this week while the JV team plays at Cape Fear.

Basketball is also just around the corner with the first game on November 7th at Oakwood in Greenville.  “We lost a lot of players from last year’s team so we may be able to fly under the radar,” Richardson said.

SportsTalk: Crossroads Celebrates 4th State Championship

Crossroads Christian School has just wrapped up its girls soccer season with the school’s fourth state championship.  The school had previously won a championship in golf and has had two consecutive boys cross country championship teams.  The girls soccer team has come a long way in the last couple of years, according to the school’s athletic director Scottie Richardson.

“We were 11-10 in 2022,” Richardson said on Thursday’s SportsTalk on WIZS.  “This year we exploded. We were ranked number 1 most of the year. We lost our first game but went on to win fifteen straight games,” Richardson added.  The team, consisting of mostly 8th, 9th and 10th graders, featured two all state freshmen.  “We are still a young team,” Richardson said.

Next year is shaping up as a good one for Crossroads as Richardson said boys soccer will return most of its players after a deep run in the playoffs this season.  Richardson also has high hopes for volleyball and feels that the girls cross country team could add to the championship banners at Crossroads Christian.

SportsTalk: Richardson Oversees Success Of Spring Sports At Crossroads

Spring is a busy time for athletics at Crossroads Christian and that means Scottie Richardson, the school’s athletic director, is also busy. For the most though, Richardson has a smile on his face since his teams are performing well. “Spring sports are wide open,” Richardson commented on Thursday’s SportsTalk.

The varsity baseball team is 3-1 and is currently on a three game winning streak. The team has been more fortunate than some of the other area schools which have been unable to get in games due to poor weather. While poor weather hasn’t been much of a concern for the baseball team, the lack of officials has. “We had to cancel a game against Warren County because there were no umpires,” Richardson said.

Girl’s soccer has an identical record to the baseball team, 3-1, and that team has also won three in a row. Girl’s soccer, with coach Tony Bennett at the controls, is also 2-0 in the conference.

Additionally, the school’s golf team is undefeated at 3-0, but Richardson is unhappy with how the state has structured the divisions. 1A and 2A schools are now in what is called Division III forcing Crossroads to play much bigger schools. Richardson says they may have twice as many golfers as Crossroads which currently only has five players. One of those is a 7th grader. Still, Richardson is happy with the team which is currently 10th in the state.

SportsTalk: Crossroads Christian Meets Vance Co. High School For First Time

Only a few miles separate Crossroads Christian School from Vance County High School, and with the two schools in the same county, one might think that the two teams would meet on the basketball court with regularity.  That’s not the case.  Friday night will mark the first time these two schools will compete in basketball.

The Vipers will run into a Crossroads Christian team that is playing well. The JV team is undefeated, the girls team is 8-1, and the boys team is 7-3.  It all starts at 4:30 p.m. with the JV team, the girls tip off at 6 p.m., and the boys at 7 p.m.

According to Crossroads Christian Athletic Director and Men’s Basketball Coach Scottie Richardson, the matchup is a big deal for Crossroads. “It’s almost like a fundraiser,” he said on Thursday’s SportsTalk. The crowd is expected to pack the game which is hosted by Crossroads, so arrive early to get the best vantage point for the games.

SportsTalk: Crossroads Fall Schedule Keeps Richardson Busy

Send in the clones!  Scottie Richardson may likely need one in the upcoming days. The Crossroads Christian Athletic Director finds himself rather busy this time of year with fall sports including volleyball, soccer and cross country. All three sports have kicked off their schedules which puts Richardson in high demand at the school where he has served as AD for the last five years.

The Colt’s men’s soccer team is hoping to return again this year to the state final four. “Men’s soccer is coming off a good win against Henderson Collegiate,” Richardson said.  Earlier in this young season, Crossroads defeated Pungo 5 – 0.  Kerr Vance Academy is the opponent this afternoon (Thursday) and Lee Christian tomorrow (Friday).

Soccer isn’t the only thing on Richardson’s plate as volleyball is underway as well. Last year the lady Colts had their first season of double digit wins in 12 years. So far, the team is 2 – 0 on the season and they are also schedule to play Kerr Vance Academy this afternoon (Thursday) and Lee Christian tomorrow (Friday).

When combined with JV games, Richardson will be keeping an eye on five different games tomorrow (Friday). To add to that, the school’s cross country team, which is the defending state champion, will conduct four meets on Friday as well.

Richardson, who was on SportsTalk today (Thursday) on WIZS, said his school’s success on the field and on the court comes down to one thing. “We’ve changed the culture over the last five years,” Richardson said. When he started at the school five years ago, the school had only had two all state players in the previous 13 years.  Last year the school boasted 12 all state players in five different sports. “We’ve achieved some success but, we have to sustain it,” Richardson says. Maybe a clone could help!
