Loose leaf collection started the week of October 23rd, 2017 on a limited basis and is increasing as needed as the accumulation of leaves become heavier. Loose leaves should be placed in rows or piles at the roadside but NOT in the gutter, street, or open ditch which could cause flooding or blockage of the storm drains. Raked leaves must be leaves only and not contain any broken glass, rocks, large sticks or other debris including trash that could cause severe damage to the leaf collection equipment and delay pickup. Leaves will not be picked up if those items listed above are mixed in with the leaves.

Please visit https://ci.henderson.nc.us and search Municode for a copy of the Sanitation Code.

Any questions should be directed to Jeanetta Lyons or Andy Perkinson at 252-431-6115.

Loose Leaf Collection

The following from the City of Henderson, NC:

Loose leaf collection will begin the week of October 23rd, 2017 and will end Mid-January. This involves the use of a vacuum machine and trucks.  Therefore, it is essential that leaves be free of rocks, trash and limbs so that the equipment is not damaged. You may continue to bag the leaves or place in a container, however it is not required until the loose leaf pickup season is over.

LOOSE LEAVES – All leaves must be raked behind the curb (not into storm drains, ditches or gutters on the street).
BAGGED LEAVES – All leaves must be in CLEAR plastic bags and weigh less than 50 lbs. per bag. Bags must be left at the curb. Do not put in street or gutters and ditches.

Make certain that no leaves are left on top of your water meter. Leaves will generally be picked up on a two or three week rotation.  However, this is dependent on weather conditions and leaf accumulation. If you have any questions, contact the Public Services Department at 252-431-6115 or 252-431-6118. Also, please keep in mind after January 19, 2018 if leaves are not bagged, there will be a $75.00 charge.

The City of Henderson/ Kerr Lake Regional Water System will begin repair on a 36” water main just outside the water plant beginning at 12:00 a.m. on the morning of February 15, 2017.

Due to the repair procedure it will be necessary to shut the main off to replace the pipe.

City Council Approves New Budget

On Monday night, the Henderson City Council approved the fiscal year 2016-2017 budget.

There was little discussion before the final budget of $38,065,594 was adopted.  The budget review process has been underway for the past six weeks.

Set was the property tax rate at $0.712 to each $100.00 in valuation on taxable property.  Despite an increase of .092 (9.2 cents) from this year’s budget, it is not believed that many folks will see an increase in their property tax payments.  Many properties in Vance County suffered a 12-to-15 percent decrease in value in the most recent valuation completed.

Water rates increased by three percent.  The vehicle tax increased from $10.00 to $30.00.

The demolition funds for property jointly owned with Vance County was established at $33,000, down from the original proposed $80,000.  The remaining $47,000 will be held in contingency and will be utilized if or when the County increases its funds for further demolition.

The adopted budget does include more funds for the Henderson Downtown Development plan.
