Youth Baseball Returns to the Town of Bunn, NC!

Recreational baseball has not been played in the town of Bunn, NC in four years. Not so long ago Bunn had a successful youth baseball and softball program with multiple Dixie and Tarheel League championships, but like many recreational leagues around the county, youth sports funding was cut and youth teams have suffered.

The Franklin County School Board was helpful in getting a discounted rate for the Bunn Middle School softball field. Dr. Larry Webb with Franklin County Schools, Michael Focus from the communications office and Diane Marks helped coordinate the fields.

The staff from Bunn Middle School, including Dr. Latoia Valentine, principal, and Bunn Middle School’s baseball coach Robert Pendleton helped with logistics on the ground.

With the help of volunteer parents using their own money and resources, kids in the town of Bunn and surrounding areas get to play tee ball and coach pitch baseball at no cost to their parents and grandparents. Thanks to this support, over 80 kids registered to play this season.

This season, team names honor the Dixie 2006 Coach Pitch District 10 champions and recent Bunn football greats Tarik Cohen and Johnathan Alston. The other team names include Spencer Brickhouse, Tevin Perry, Nicholas Saunders and Trevor Gupton – members of the 2006 Dixie Coach Pitch Championship team.

The future of the league depends on continued support, but as of right now, youth baseball is back in the town of Bunn, NC and the kids are having a blast!

Vance County High School is back at home this Friday night against conference rival Bunn, the defending Northern Carolina Conference Runners-up.  Some Wildcats fans considered 2017 to be Bunn’s weakest season in a decade – but the ‘Cats finished 8-4 overall last year, after starting the season 1-2 under their first new coach in 35 years.

This year, Bunn has another first-year coach, and again started out 1-2, losing big to both Franklinton and Southern Nash for the second straight year.  Well, the Wildcats lost to the same two teams last season, and still ended up 8-4 and no. 2 in the league, along the way beating both Northern Vance and Southern Vance.  By this time last season, Bunn had beaten Warren County and J. F. Webb for a respectable 4-2 record.

They have done that again this year, but are just 3-2 due to weather cancellations/postponements.  The Wildcats offense put up over 500 rushing yards last week in their 57-27 thrashing of Warren County.

The Vipers offense, still averaging three touchdowns per game, should be able to score against Bunn, but the defense will have to play the run just as tough as they did at Roanoke Rapids to give VC a chance to win.

 

Mark Speed Unanimously Appointed County Commissioner

Franklin County June 27, 2017: Franklin County Commissioners made a unanimous decision last evening to appoint James M. Speed (Mark) to fill the unexpired District 3 seat formerly served by the late John M. May.

Commissioner Speed was appointed following the District 3 Executive Committee’s nomination on July 20, 2017 and will serve the Epsom/Centerville area. Commissioner Speed comes from a family of public servants. His grandfather served as Franklin County Commissioner in the 1920’s. His father, the late James D. Speed served the North Carolina House of Representatives for 12 years and the North Carolina Senate for 20 years until his passing in 2006.

Commissioner Speed says he is thankful to all those who have encouraged him to serve through the years and to continue his family’s legacy. He said he looks forward to learning and working with fellow board members in serving the citizens of Franklin County.

Board Chairman Cedric Jones welcomes Commissioner Speed to the board and said he looks forward to working together for the betterment of Franklin County.

Commissioner Speed was sworn under oath by County Attorney Aubrey S. Tomlinson, Jr. and accompanied by his wife Camille Speed and nephew Davis Speed.

Following the appointment, Commissioner John M. May was honored posthumously with a standing ovation. His wife Vickie was in attendance.

Commissioner Speed will attend his first board meeting on July 17, 2017.

Boil Water Advisory Lifted in Franklin County

Franklin County, June 7, 2017: Franklin County Public Utilities has now cancelled its boil water advisory. Franklin County’s main water supplier, the City of Henderson, experienced pump failures on June 5, 2017 which led to low water pressure in their system and the subsequent boil water advisory. All water conservation measures have been lifted as well.

Franklin County Finance Team achieves another honor

Franklin County, NC May 25, 2017: For eighteen years, Franklin County’s Finance Department has been recognized nationally for their excellence in financial reporting. Once again, the team has achieved the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.

The Finance Department was recently notified by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) that its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report was awarded the Certificate of Achievement.

The Certificate of Achievement is awarded by the GFOA of the United States and Canada for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR).

Attainment of the certificate of the achievement represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

The CAFR has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR.

Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputies arrest two for string of B&Es

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Investigative Unit arrested two Franklin County residents on December 16th, 2016 and charged them each with 22 counts of breaking and entering of a motor vehicle and 13 counts of larceny.

These incidents are alleged to have occurred December 6th, 2016  through December 8th, 2016.

Christopher Wells is currently being held in the Franklin County Detention Center under a $125,000 secured bond for the above charges.

Joshua Wells is currently being held under a $120,000 secured bond.
