TownTalk: Pink With A Passion’s Cancer Walk Coming April 18

The color pink isn’t listed among the seven “official” colors of a rainbow, but you can bet that it will be well represented in this year’s 5th annual Pink With A Passion cancer walk on Saturday, April 18 at the Warren County Recreational Complex.

This year’s theme for the daylong event is “Many Colors, One Cause,” and organizer Amena Wilson wants participants to come out sporting t-shirts in all colors of the rainbow.

Although its origin is with breast cancer, Wilson said the non-profit organization wants to show support for people, no matter the type of cancer they may be dealing with.

“We all walk together and look like a big, beautiful rainbow,” Wilson said on Monday’s TownTalk.

Last year, more than 400 people came out for the event. Wilson said they need everyone to register for the event, whether they plan to walk or just come out to enjoy the activities.

On-site registration begins at 9:30 a.m. for those who may not be able to complete the online registration. The walk will begin at 10 a.m. and there are plenty of activities to take part in following the walk, she said.

Walkers will be encouraged by the cheerleaders from Warren County High School and Warren County Middle School, adding another festive touch to the morning’s activities.

A Kid Zone will have a bouncy house, inflatables, face painting and more, and there will be numerous food trucks with everything from Mexican food, burgers and ‘dogs, ice cream and more.

Saxophonist Gregory Amos will provide entertainment as well as offer his testimony about his own breast cancer diagnosis.

The Envision Diagnostics mobile mammogram bus will be onsite this year as well to provide as many as 30 mammograms free of charge. Call 877.318.1349 to schedule an appointment.

It’s a day of hope, healing and unity, Wilson said. It’s a celebration of strength, a tribute to survivors and a powerful reminder that no one fights alone.

Wilson, herself a cancer survivor, said there’s something very powerful about hearing a survivor’s testimony that gives hope and inspiration to those who are undergoing treatment.

“It helps calm their nerves when they talk to someone who has already gone through it,” she said. “It helps calm them to know that they went through what I went through. And they’re ok.”

There will be a special survivors’ tent to honor those who have beaten cancer; a memorial table with candles and a special board to post prayers, names and words of encouragement also will be available to remember those who lost their fight.

The event is free and open to the community to join in to show support for all those along their journey to fight cancer.

The Local Skinny! Mammogram Bus Rolls to Aycock, Nov. 1

Wearing pink in October and tying pink ribbons around lamppost and trees are visual reminders to Freddie Harris about just how much community support there is for breast cancer awareness. And she wants a big showing of support on Saturday at a community event to learn more about how breast cancer awareness.

The Invision Diagnostics bus is pulling in to Aycock Rec Center on Saturday, Nov. 1 to provide free 3-D mammograms. The slots are filling up, Harris said on Tuesday’s segment of The Local Skinny! but there’s still time to take part. Call 877.318.1349 to schedule your appointment. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The service is for those with or without insurance, Harris said. Although appointments are preferred, Harris said anyone who comes out Saturday without scheduling first will get assistance.

“No one will miss an opportunity,” she said. “We’ll figure it out.”

Harris, a two-time cancer survivor and founder of the nonprofit Sisters Speak Life, said there’s more to Saturday’s event than mammograms. Inside the Aycock gym will be vendors and others just waiting to provide participants with information, resources and more.

Feeling nervous about entering the bus to have the mammogram? “Step inside the gym and someone will go with you,” Harris said.

In addition to resources and information, Harris said they’ll show a video titled “Metamorphosis of the Butterfly,” which captures survivors’ journeys through diagnosis and treatment.

And the Wall of Hope is a place to share information about a survivor – whether yourself or someone you know.

People who’ve had their world turned upside by a cancer diagnosis can feel uplifted by the support they feel, Harris said. “Not just from family and friends, but the community. I think that what makes a difference.”

Harris said Saturday’s event is another way to promote awareness of breast cancer, but that’s not all. It’s a way for people to come together to show support for one another.

TownTalk: Pink with a Passion on April 12th in Warrenton

Look for the rainbow at the 4th annual Pink With A Passion event Saturday, April 12 at the Warren County Recreational Complex.

The theme for this year’s walk is “Walk With Strength: Fight Cancer In All Colors,” making reference to the distinct color assigned to particular cancers – pink represents breast cancer, for example.

As a breast cancer survivor herself, organizer Amena Wilson may be decked out in pink for the day’s activities, but she hopes to see a rainbow of colors represented.

Registration for the walk begins at 9:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m, Wilson said.

The official part of the day will take place at 11 a.m., and participants can witness the Tree of Hope ceremony that Wilson says will be a unique experience.

The Tree of Hope, with its twinkling lights, will be a way to remember those who have lost their lives to cancer, as well as a way to offer hope to those facing health challenges. But, Wilson said, it’s also a joyous time to celebrate all those who have overcome challenges and are now in recovery following cancer diagnoses.

It’s a somber occasion, but it’s also going to be a lot of fun for the whole family. Last year’s event brought out about 400 people; this year, Wilson is expecting an even bigger crowd.

“We’ll have a lot going on,” Wilson said. There will be a band and a dj providing musical entertainment, as well as a time to hear testimonies from cancer survivors and take part in a balloon release.

For the kids, there will be plenty of activities, including a bouncy house, face painting and a fire truck with a Smokey Bear character on board.

And let’s not forget the food trucks – Wilson said there will be everything from vegan on up to Southern Soul food on site for everyone to enjoy.

“It’s going to be a day full of joy, a day of celebration,” she said. “We’re so geared up and pumped up and ready to go!”

Bring a lawn chair and expect to have a great time, she added.
