TownTalk: Estate Sale To Benefit American Cancer Society

Frances Garrett is putting on an estate sale to benefit the American Cancer Society. Make plans to come out to shop beginning Tuesday, Feb. 13.

Garrett is a cancer survivor and she and her loyal volunteers have all the items priced and ready for sale, according to Aaron Ramsey, one of the volunteers that makes up Garrett’s team she calls “Frances and Friends.”

There are numerous household items that are just waiting for a new home – from lamps and all sorts of glassware to figurines and other collectibles.

“She works day and night,” Ramsey said on Monday’s TownTalk. “She’s one of the highest volume fundraisers throughout the state – they give her an award every year.”

For Garrett, it’s a labor of love – to show support for fellow cancer survivors while raising money to contribute to the cause.

And, Ramsey said, all proceeds go directly to the American Cancer Society.

Cash or checks will be accepted.

“Come on out and take a look,” Ramsey said.

The sale is located in the shopping plaza on Raleigh Road, between Dollar Tree and the Salvation Army Family store, across from M.R. Williams.

The Local Skinny! Relay For Life To Take Place September 30th

The Vance County Relay for Life is resuming its efforts after several years of reduced activity because of pandemic restrictions. The entire community is invited to the Henderson Family YMCA on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. to participate, honor and remember.

Freddie Harris and Donald Matthews shared details about the event on Wednesday’s segment of The Local Skinny!

“I believe this will be great start for Relay for Life coming back to Vance County, said Harris, one of the organizers from St. James Missionary Baptist Church that is sponsoring the event. There will be an opening ceremony and luminaria lining the track, with lots of activities in between.

The theme is Uniting in Hope, Empowering Together, she said. The main word is hope, Harris said.

Hope is the key word, Harris said. “I’m hoping that hope will inspire people and that people will feel hopeful from this event,” she said.
“Not just cancer survivors, but the city and the county. We really need to come together.”

Donald Matthews remembers the Relay events of some years ago when thousands of people would gather to participate. He was in charge of logistics, and it was challenging to organize 75 or more teams and have them in the right place at the right time.

There are currently nine teams signed up to participate, but the event can accommodate more.

The event is open to the whole community, and Matthews invites other churches, businesses and individuals to take part.

“Just because COVID stopped (us), cancer didn’t stop,” he said. “Our goal is, one day, to work ourselves out of a job. I’d like to see (cancer) eradicated, if I’ve got anything to do with it,” he said.

Harris invites the community to come out and show support for cancer survivors.

Cancer survivors like herself, a two-time cancer survivor.

“We want everybody to come out and be a part of it,” she said.

Cancer Society To Benefit From Corbitt Emporium Auction

Tomorrow’s auction at Corbitt Emporium will have a special twist, thanks to the owner of the collectibles and antiques business – he’s donated all the remaining inventory to the American Cancer Society.

Aaron Ramsey opened the business more than five years ago, which featured items from individual vendors as well as items he had collected over the years. The auction is being sponsored by Frances and Friends, a local Relay for Life team.

The auction begins at 10 a.m., but the 1508 Second Street location will open at 9 a.m. for customer viewing.

Auctioneers Dan Weldon and Tom Eaves will conduct the sale, which includes antiques, collectibles, glassware, old tools, seasonal items and much more.

Items purchased from the American Cancer Society are tax-deductible.

American Cancer Society to hold local Meet and Greet

American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Vance County to Hold Community Meet & Greet Event on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Maria Parham Medical Center

WHAT: Cancer survivors, caregivers, volunteers, and community leaders will gather to host a meet and greet event for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Vance County. Guests will hear how the community has benefited from funds raised, honor cancer survivors, and network with area volunteers and community leaders. Event sponsors will be recognized for their support of the American Cancer Society at this meet and greet event. Also, the new 2017 website is now available for teams and individuals to register now for next year’s Relay For Life event at www.relayforlife.org/vancenc.

BACKGROUND: The Relay For Life movement unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all. Individuals and teams raise funds and awareness to help the American Cancer Society save more lives from cancer.
