Dog Flu in North Carolina

A highly contagious canine flu virus that blanketed the Midwest in the spring made it’s way to North Carolina in July. Dr. Patricia Norris — director of the State Ag Department’s Animal Welfare office — says just like the flu that we’re susceptible to, the dog flu is more worrisome with young dogs (puppies), older dogs, and those who may already have a medical condition. So far only a handful of cases have been confirmed, but there may be more cases that health officials don’t know about, as canine influenza is not a reportable disease in North Carolina.
