On a warm, cloudy Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium in Charlotte, NC, the Charlotte 49ers stunned the visiting North Texas football team with an exciting bounce-back win. Despite reaching the end zone just once in the first half, the 49ers managed to seal a one-point win in crunch time. Here is how it went down.
North Texas got off to a hot start, moving the ball efficiently through the air. Quarterback Mason Fine threw back-to-back touchdown passes – one for 40 yards, and another went for 64 yards. In both cases, North Texas marched down the field in less than a minute-and-a-half.
Charlotte, in the first quarter, could not match North Texas’ dynamic passing attack, so they focused on moving the ball swiftly, through the ground game. Unfortunately, their success was insignificant. At the start of the second quarter, Charlotte had zero points and was down two scores.
Looking for answers, the 49ers relied heavily on the strength and quick feet of star running back Benny Lemay, who controlled the pace of Charlotte’s offensive unit. In total, he ran 30 times for 155 yards, which helped him reach the end zone twice.
Charlotte’s first scoring drive necessitated 13 plays and took just under six minutes off the game clock. Of those 13 plays, eight of them were handoffs to Lemay. Once Charlotte got within five yards of the goal line, Lemay exited the game briefly to catch his breath and Ishod Finger plowed his way into the end zone. However, upon further review, the call was overturned. Lemay came back out and finished the drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown.
After the half, a renovated Charlotte offense took the field. Quarterback Chris Reynolds read the defense well and slung with football with accuracy. Several big plays including a 52-yard touchdown pass and a 29-yard Reynolds rushing touchdown shrunk North Texas’ lead to just one score.
When North Texas missed a field goal at the top of the fourth quarter, the 49ers found themselves in an excellent position to make a late push for the win. Charlotte, in the fourth quarter, outscored North Texas, 18-3, which secured the memorable victory.
Charlotte’s latest victory ended a four-game losing streak and claimed the college’s first win in C-USA (1-3 overall).
American Legion Post 60 to Hold Veterans Day Ceremony, Chicken Plate Fundraiser

The Henderson American Legion Post 60 will have its annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Saturday, November 9, 2019, at Henderson Collegiate High School, 1071 Old Epsom Road, Henderson starting at 10 a.m.
The public and all veterans are invited.
The Henderson American Legion Post 60 will also have a Chicken Plate Fundraiser on Friday, November 15, 2019, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the corner of Garnett and Spring Street in Henderson. Tickets are available for $8.
The meal will be take-out or dine-in and will include chicken, green beans, potatoes, roll and dessert. Drinks will be included for dine-in only.

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ridgeway to Hold Fall Bazaar

The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, located at 114 Poplar Mount Road in Ridgeway, NC, will hold its annual Fall Bazaar on Saturday, November 9, 2019. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the church.
For sale will be homemade baked goods, preserves, pickles, soups, chili, crafts, RADA cutlery and a variety of White Elephant (yard sale type) items.
Visit our snack bar for ham biscuits, homemade soups and chili, chicken salad and pimento cheese sandwiches, desserts, soft drinks and coffee.
All proceeds go to various mission projects.

Mark Your Calendar: Granville’s Annual Fall Clean Out Scheduled for Nov. 16

On Saturday, November 16, Granville County residents will have an opportunity to bring recyclable and hazardous household items to the Expo and Convention Center in Oxford as the annual Fall Clean Out Recycle and Collection Event is held from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
On site will be environmental businesses, agencies and organizations that will collect household materials for either disposal or recycling. Items such as paint, scrap metal, pesticides, batteries, outdated prescriptions and other items will be collected from participants that include Veolia, the N.C. Department of Agriculture, TT&E Metals, Shred Ace, Interstate Batteries and the Granville County Sheriff’s Office.
Residents are also encouraged to bring outdated computers, laptops, telephones and other items and devices for electronic recycling.
Also on hand will be the Granville County Humane Society, which will accept donations of pet supplies, dog and cat food, leashes, collars, crates, pet beds, kitty litter, towels and other needed items.
The Nov. 16 date marks the conclusion of Granville County’s participation in the “Recycle Right NC” campaign, which was launched in September to make residents all over North Carolina more aware of the importance of recycling and to reduce contaminants in the recycle stream. This ten-week campaign ends on America Recycles Day, which will be observed on Nov. 15.
