-Press Release, Franklin County Government
Franklin County Libraries are currently and indefinitely closed inside to the public in order to ensure materials are properly quarantined before release.
Staff is making every effort to ensure materials are disinfected, quarantined and handled appropriately before and during any transaction. Doing so requires storing items in quarantine for 72 hours which puts a premium on available space that circumvents browsing by the public.
Hands-on acquisitions from the shelves by appropriately masked and gloved library personnel are safe, however, so we offer curbside delivery of materials to meet your needs. Patrons may select and put items on hold via the online catalog or by calling Franklin County libraries to request specific material or ask that personnel curate selections.
Items are also available through the NC Cardinal consortium, and many additions to online resources for all ages have been made. Online resources require the barcode number from the patron’s card and the patron’s PIN. If you are unsure about your information, call your library for assistance.
Franklin County Public School students have access to online resources using their Department of Public Instruction issued student identification numbers and a PIN. Content appropriate collections are available at e-inc and NC Kids as well as NC Live.org. Libraries are working with the Charter schools to assist students with access.
One of the services provided by libraries is making copies for patrons. Patrons may email documents or bring a USB and have copies made from its contents. Staff will also scan and email documents for patrons or send a fax.
Other useful services available include mail-in voter registration forms. Wi-Fi is available on the premises from 6 a.m. through midnight and item return via Book Drop is available near the entrance to each building. Standard check-out of material is handled at the curbside.
Exact change and personal checks are accepted tender for transactions requiring payments. Appointments are required for curbside item pick up and strongly encouraged for copy, print and fax services.

-Press Release, Henderson Police Department
On Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at approximately 8:43 p.m., officers of the Henderson Police Department were dispatched to the 600 block of E. Andrews Avenue to investigate gunfire. When they arrived, they located Alveante (Al) Markeith Holden (18), of Vance County, suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso.
Holden was found seated inside a vehicle he had been operating earlier, in the parking lot of “The Wash House,” a laundromat. Holden had succumbed to his injuries prior to the officers’ arrival.
Evidence was found in and around “The Wash House,” and several individuals were interviewed. Through information gathered, Holden is a victim of a narcotics transaction gone awry.
The suspect is a white male and is believed to be the sole shooter in the incident. He was accompanied by another white male and a white female.
HPD is seeking the assistance of the community and the people of the surrounding area to solve this case. We are currently looking for an extended cab, white, full-size truck with a high stance, possibly a lift kit. The make of the vehicle is not clear but is possibly a GMC or Chevrolet. The only additional descriptor we have is brush/limbs protruding from the cargo area.
We are pleading with the community for anyone with information about this case to contact us immediately. A cash reward of up to $2,000 is offered through Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers ((252) 492-1925 or P3 app).
Please call the HPD at (252) 438-4141 or contact us through Facebook or Instagram.

Town Talk 10/7/20: GRRO Hires Health Workers to Serve as Community Liaisons
/by Kelly BondurantTHIS STORY IS PRESENTED IN PART BY DRAKE DENTISTRY
Lucette Mercer, deputy director of Green Rural Redevelopment, Inc. (GRRO), appeared on WIZS Town Talk Wednesday at 11 a.m.
Mercer discussed the recent news that GRRO has hired 25 health workers to serve communities in Vance, Granville, Franklin, Warren, Nash, Pitt, Halifax and Wake Counties during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Residing in the areas they are serving, Mercer explained that these health workers serve as a liaison between health and social organizations in the community, connecting people to the resources and services they need.
GRRO, a non-profit organization, has focused on providing access to healthy food and meals to people in the Kerr-Tar region. Their recent initiative, “Wellness on Wheels,” provided area youth with free healthy meals over the summer.
“GRRO has been known for our farmers market, food, produce, garden and farming activities,” said Mercer. “This time, we’ve really put our sights on combating the impact that COVID-19 has had in our communities.”
Working with local county health departments, the trained health workers assist families and individuals with coordinating referrals and service delivery. In addition, workers can help those diagnosed with COVID-19, those asked to quarantine due to a possible exposure or those at high risk of complications from the virus get food, groceries and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), among other items.
“Workers can help residents quarantine with the support they need to do so successfully and not have to go out in the community during their two-week quarantine period,” Mercer explained.
Henry Crews, the executive director of GRRO, noted in a recent press release, “We saw the devastation that the pandemic has brought to our community, and we used our organizational flexibility to expand our programming and grow our team to reach the ever-increasing numbers of rural residents who have been impacted by the Coronavirus.”
In partnership with Curamericas Global, Duke Family Medicine & Community Health and the North Carolina Department of Health & Human Services, GRRO has joined a statewide network of agencies providing outreach services. These efforts are made possible by Federal funding from The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
For additional information, please call (252) 430-7999 or visit www.grronc.org.
