  • Use caution. Don’t get caught up in all the seed catalog pictures. You only have so much space in your garden.
  • January is inventory month. Do you have enough seeds, equipment, and supplies to prepare for the gardening season?
  • Now is an excellent time to plan your 2025 Garden out on paper. Include your Gardening Goals for this year.
  • It’s still a good time to take inventory of your seeds. That way you will know what vegetable seeds to order, try ordering a new variety of seeds for the 2025 growing season.
  • Check for cool-season weeds. You can use spot sprays to treat cool-season weeds once it gets warmer.
  • Do your research before you purchase any fruit trees.

  • The Vance and Warren County Beekeepers Association will meet on January 13th, at 7pm at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market.

  • Soil samples right now are $4 a sample.
  • Review your 2024 Garden Journal. Look back at your journal entries to see what went well and what did not go as well in your garden last year.
  • Now is a good time to check your house plants to see if they need repotting. 
  • It’s still a good time to take inventory of your seeds. That way you will know what vegetable seeds to order, try ordering a new variety of seeds for the 2025 growing season.

  • Vance County Regional Farmers Market’s last open day for 2024 will be this Saturday, December 14th, from 8am-1pm.
  • We encourage you to buy a North Carolina Christmas Tree this year for the Holidays.
  • If you have a cut live Christmas tree, check that live reservoir. Make sure it has an ample water supply. You do not want that tree to dry out. Do not put your tree next to a heating source or a fireplace.
  • Take a visit to our local plant nursery. Check out our other Christmas plants for the Holidays.
  • Remember to use personal protective equipment when doing landscaping. Eye and ear protection. Even sunscreen. Use a good pair of gloves.

  • Take your soil samples to the Vance County Cooperative Extension. Do it as soon as possible. 
  • You need to have your frost protection measures ready. 
  • Go through your cleanup orchard. Clean up those leaves and limbs. 
  • Remember to use personal protective equipment when doing chores in the fall. Eye and ear protection. Even sunscreen. Use a good pair of gloves. 
  • Leaf collection season is upon us. Compost your leaves. Don’t burn them. 
  • Winterize any of your sprayers. Garden hose and other sprayers that have water in them. Let the water out so that it will not freeze and damage that equipment.

  • 4-County 4H Poultry Show and Sell Event will be this Saturday, October 26, the sell will start at 3:45pm and the auction will start around 6:30pm at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market.
  • Vermiculture and Vermicomposting with Earthworms Workshop taking place on Monday, November 4th, starting at 6:30pm, led by Wayne Rowland. It will be at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market.
  • We might get a touch of frost as the temperatures get lower. You need to prepare your frost protection now.
  • Now is a good time to gather materials if you are planning for new shrub and flower planting beds. 
  • Now is a good time to plant your mums and pansies.
  • Fire ants are still around. So be aware of them!
  • Check your crops for insects.
