St. Baldrick’s Day Cornhole Tournament

Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the Henderson Police Department

Registration: 11:30 a.m. Tournament Begins: 12:30 a.m.

Boards: The boards measure 2ft. in width 4ft. in length. The hole is 6” diameter, measured 9” from the top of the board to the center of the hole. Bags: The bags being used are 6” X 6” in size and weigh 16 oz. Spacing: Each board will be positioned at a distance of 27’ from the front of one board to the other. All boards and bags will be provided by the sponsor.  No personal boards or bags will be allowed.

Tournament Format

This will be a single elimination tournament. The number of teams will be determined by the number of entries. Team placement is randomly determined prior to the start of the tournament.

Scoring

A coin toss will determine who will throw first to begin the tournament game. Players will alternate throws until all 8 bags have been thrown.

  1. Each bag on the board = 1 point. Each bag in the hole = 3 points.
  2. Any bags touching the ground or “bounced” on the box do not count and are to be removed prior to the next bag being thrown by the opposing team.
  3. Total points for each team are calculated. The team scoring the most points in a round receives their total score.
  4. The team who scores last will have the first throw of the next round.
  5. The first team to achieve a score of 21 points or more will declared the winner. A tie will require extra rounds until a winner is determined.

 

Ground Rules

  1. The winning team is to collect and return all bags and report their final score to the tournament director at the registration table.
  2. There will be a “No Skunk” rule.
  3. The tournament committee will have the final decision regarding any questions or conflicts arising throughout the tournament.
  4. Be polite and courteous at all time.

Henderson Man Sentenced for Possession of a Firearm by a Felon

NEW BERN – The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina announced that in federal court on April 5, 2017, United States District Judge Louise W. Flanagan sentenced WILLIAM LACHLIAN ORMOND, III, 29, of Henderson, NC to 57 months of imprisonment followed by 3 years of supervised release.

ORMOND was named in an Indictment filed on March 22, 2016 and charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. On June 16, 2016, ORMOND pled guilty to that charge.

On October 29, 2015, an officer with the Henderson Police Department in Henderson encountered ORMOND walking down the street, and knew him to have outstanding warrants for his arrest. The officer suspected that ORMOND was armed due to the way he was holding his waistband, and attempted to engage ORMOND in conversation. ORMOND attempted to flee on foot and was captured by the officer. Upon taking the defendant into custody, the officer located a 9mm handgun with a large capacity magazine on the defendant. The handgun was loaded with 22 rounds of ammunition.

This case was part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative which encourages federal, state, and local agencies to cooperate in a unified “team effort” against gun crime, targeting repeat offenders who continually plague their communities.

The Henderson Police Department, North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement, North Carolina State Crime Lab, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) conducted the criminal investigation of this case. Assistant United States Attorney S. Katherine Burnette handled the prosecution of this case and Assistant United States Attorney Peggah Wilson handled the sentencing hearing.

Henderson PD Crime of the Month: Hendersonian Suffers Gunshot Wound Inside Residence

On March 12, 2017 at approximately 9:33 PM officers with the Henderson Police Department responded to 250 Keene Street in reference to a shooting into a residence. Upon arrival officers that Jacqueline Terry had sustained injuries resulting from a gunshot to the leg. There were also four other individuals inside the residence at the time of the shooting whom did not report any injuries. Terry was transported to a local medical facility to receive further treatment for her injuries.

Henderson PD Crime of the Month: No Limit Sweepstakes Robbed at Gunpoint

On March 29, 2017 at approximately 2:02 AM officers with the Henderson Police Department responded to 941 W. Andrews Avenue Suite F (No Limits Sweepstakes) in reference an armed robbery. Upon arrival, officers spoke with Elizabeth Black who stated that a subject forced his way into the business while pointing a handgun at her. The suspect took a brown envelope containing U.S. currency and ran out the front door of the business.

Eighteen Year Old Hendersonian Shot and Killed

On Sunday, April 02, 2017, at 7:16 p.m. members of the Henderson Police Department Patrol Division responded to Party Pick Up, 655 N. Garnett Street, Henderson in response to calls of someone shot.  When officers arrived they located one victim, Talik Ahmad Harris, 18, 1220 Second Street, Henderson.  Harris was determined to be deceased upon arrival of emergency medical personnel.

The investigation into this matter has been turned over to the Henderson Police Department Criminal Investigation Division.  Anyone witnessing this event or having been in the area around the time of the incident is asked to contact the Henderson Police Department at 252-438-4141 or the Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers at 252-492-1925.

Henderson Man Sentenced for Two Counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Felon

NEW BERN – The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina announced that in federal court, United States District Judge Louise W. Flanagan sentenced ISMIL GRAY JEFFERS, 23, of Henderson, NC to 140 months of imprisonment followed by 3 years of supervised release.

JEFFERS pled guilty on November 15, 2016 to being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

On September 22, 2015, the Vance County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance complaint. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found JEFFERS in the bathroom of Auto Connection Used Auto Sales and subsequently conducted a search of his vehicle where a firearm and controlled substances were found. On October 19, 2015, members of the Henderson Police Department conducted a checkpoint traffic stop in which JEFFERS was a passenger in a vehicle. The vehicle pulled away from the checkpoint causing an officer to pursue. The vehicle stopped a short distance later and JEFFERS, a convicted felon, was observed throwing a handgun into a grassy area.

This case was part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative which encourages federal, state, and local agencies to cooperate in a unified “team effort” against gun crime, targeting repeat offenders who continually plague their communities.

The criminal investigation of this case was conducted by the Henderson Police Department Police Department, the Vance County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) and the North Carolina State Crime Lab. HPD Crime of the Month: Individual injured after drive-by shooting

On February 25, 2017 at approximately 11:50 PM officers with the Henderson Police Department responded to Maria Parham Health in reference to a shooting into an occupied vehicle. Upon arrival, officers spoke with Nakiya Cheek who stated that while at a stop sign at Davis and Nicholas Street a vehicle drove pass and a subject opened fire into her vehicle. As a result Cheek sustained injuries from broken glass.

On February 27, 2017 at approximately 8:45 AM officers with the Henderson Police Department responded to 84 Ranes Drive in reference to property damage to a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers spoke with Kelly Puryear who stated that she found a bullet hole in the rear window of her vehicle.

Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers Approve New Text-a-Tip Program

Henderson, NC – Henderson and Vance County Residents will now be able to text the Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers along with the traditional phone in method to report crime.

Kevin Bullock, the president of the Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers said, “We’re still in the early stages of setting up our local Text-a-Tip program, but once completed, the Text-a-Tip will allow anyone with a cellphone to not only call 252-492-1925, but text in a crime they witness as well. Other Crime Stopper groups across North Carolina are using this technology with great success to reach younger audiences.”

The program will be ready to go later in the year.

Henderson Police Chief Marcus Barrow said, “Text-a-Tip will put us in contact with a new generation and also give others another simplistic way of reporting criminal activity anonymously.”

Henderson PD Crime of the Month – Individual Robbed at Henderson Food Mart

On December 24, 2016 at approximately 9:45 PM officers with the Henderson Police Department responded to Henderson Food Mart in reference an armed robbery. Upon arrival, officers found that a Mr. Jason Rodriguez had been robbed while transporting an unknown subject. Mr. Rodriguez stated that he was lost and that the suspect was picked up to provide directions. Mr. Rodriguez was struck in the face two times by the suspect. Taken from Mr. Rodriguez were US currency and a cellular phone.
