Help patients, honor loved ones by donating blood with the Red Cross

DURHAM, N.C. (May 17, 2017) – Before busy summer schedules set in, the American Red Cross urges eligible donors to roll up a sleeve to help ensure a sufficient supply for patients in need.

Donors of all blood types are needed now to help accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving cancer treatment.

Kenneth Reed gives blood in his son’s honor. When Trace was 8 days old, he underwent heart surgery and received blood transfusions. “It’s the least I can do. If it wasn’t for donors, he wouldn’t be here with us today,” said Reed. “I don’t call it donating blood; I call it donating life.”

Giving blood is an easy and thoughtful way to honor a loved one who has relied on blood products, to follow in the example of a family member who gives regularly or to simply help others.

As a thank you, those who come out to donate May 26-30 will receive a Red Cross-branded visor, while supplies last. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Donors can then also visit redcrossblood.org/cedarfair to enter to win one of three grand prize packages for four to Knott’s Berry Farm in California or Cedar Point in Ohio.

VGCC and Epsom Fire Department partner to offer Ag Rescue training

Vance-Granville Community College recently partnered with the Epsom Fire Department in northern Franklin County to offer a training program designed to prepare local firefighters for specific emergency situations that may occur on farms.

The “Machinery & Agricultural Rescue” course was conducted in March, with instructor David Pease of the R.E.D.S. (Rescue Extrication Delivery Specialists) Team, a group he helped found to provide specialized training. Pease has over 40 years of experience in rescue and emergency medical services.

Some 35 firefighters participated in the class, representing not only the Epsom fire department but also the Vance County Rescue Squad, the Bearpond Fire Department, the Cokesbury Fire Department, the Oxford Fire Department and the Louisburg Fire Department.

Randy Owen, the college’s coordinator/instructor of Fire/Rescue Programs, said that training courses like this represent the college’s interest in meeting the particular needs of the four rural counties served by VGCC. He expressed his appreciation to the Henderson Fire Department and the Vance County Rescue Squad for supplying special equipment and personnel to help conduct the course.

VGCC Dean of Continuing Education Dale Fey added, “Because agriculture is an extremely important part of the heritage and the economy of our communities, the Continuing Education division has initiated numerous programs in recent years that relate to farming, such as NC REAL Agricultural Entrepreneurship, Heavy Equipment Operator training and this fire/rescue course.”

Maria Parham Health to offer free sports physicals

Maria Parham Health will be offering free sports physicals from 5:00 p.m. –  7:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 17th for those students who plan to play sports in a school setting.

Vance County Community Resource Fair Coming This Thursday

We are counting on agencies/vendors throughout Vance County and surrounding areas to join forces to provide an opportunity to expose youth and citizens to possible career paths in Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences/ Human Services, Youth Development, and Community and Rural Development to make our citizens more competitive in a global society. This year we will also be collaborating with Vance County’s Week of the Young Child Events that will take place April 24 – 30, 2017 throughout the community.

On Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Western Vance High School, located at 2785 Poplar Creek Rd, Henderson, NC 27537, several community agencies and Vance County Schools will host the 4th Annual Community Resource Fair.  The Fair will be open to the public during the school day starting at 9am – 3pm.

Henderson PD Releases St. Baldrick’s Day Cornhole Tournament Details

St. Baldrick’s Day Cornhole Tournament

Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the Henderson Police Department

Registration: 11:30 a.m. Tournament Begins: 12:30 a.m.

Boards: The boards measure 2ft. in width 4ft. in length. The hole is 6” diameter, measured 9” from the top of the board to the center of the hole. Bags: The bags being used are 6” X 6” in size and weigh 16 oz. Spacing: Each board will be positioned at a distance of 27’ from the front of one board to the other. All boards and bags will be provided by the sponsor.  No personal boards or bags will be allowed.

Tournament Format

This will be a single elimination tournament. The number of teams will be determined by the number of entries. Team placement is randomly determined prior to the start of the tournament.

Scoring

A coin toss will determine who will throw first to begin the tournament game. Players will alternate throws until all 8 bags have been thrown.

  1. Each bag on the board = 1 point. Each bag in the hole = 3 points.
  2. Any bags touching the ground or “bounced” on the box do not count and are to be removed prior to the next bag being thrown by the opposing team.
  3. Total points for each team are calculated. The team scoring the most points in a round receives their total score.
  4. The team who scores last will have the first throw of the next round.
  5. The first team to achieve a score of 21 points or more will declared the winner. A tie will require extra rounds until a winner is determined.

 

Ground Rules

  1. The winning team is to collect and return all bags and report their final score to the tournament director at the registration table.
  2. There will be a “No Skunk” rule.
  3. The tournament committee will have the final decision regarding any questions or conflicts arising throughout the tournament.
  4. Be polite and courteous at all time.
