Henderson Wellness Center Celebrates 15 Years with Ribbon Cutting

On February 16, 2017 Henderson Wellness Center celebrated its 15th year in business with a Business After Hours event followed up by a ribbon cutting on Tuesday, February 21 assisted by the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce, which was held at the center’s office location on Dabney Drive. Family, friends, staff, business owners, and associates joined together to commemorate the growing practices’ success in treating and restoring a wide range of health and spinal conditions.

Dr. Brandon Taylor opened the practice originally as “Taylor Chiropractic” in February of ’02, later incorporating medical and massage services through KaKeasha Richardson, P.A.C. and Holly Nix, L.M.B.T. The addition of providers proved not only to be auxiliary but key, which he emphasized in a brief speech. “I want people to know that as a team we understand every patient’s complaint is specific to them, and those individual needs are better managed by independent or unified provider care. There are not any pre-requisites needed to see just one of us. Our goals would not be achievable without the helpful support of this community.”

Guests spent time catching up with friends, making new business contacts, enjoying some awesome food and beverage, and winning some great prizes.

H-V Chamber Kicks off Leadership Vance 2017

The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce kicked off its 2017 Leadership Vance Program with an orientation breakfast at Vance-Granville Community College on February 7.  The group also held its team building and challenge course retreat on February 23 at the Fred G. Bond Metro Park.

The Leadership Vance program is designed to inform, challenge and educate participants on the opportunities and needs of the community and to strengthen their leadership skills while teaching about the social, economic, and political dynamics that shape our community.  The intensive training and exposure to all aspects of the community will provide participants with the historical background and the skills necessary for civic and community positions.  The program is ultimately designed to create a group of informed and dedicated leaders who will contribute to the community.

Participants are exposed to various aspects of Henderson and Vance County, specifically in regard to city and county government, health and community resources, economic development, agriculture and natural resources, history and media and criminal justice and law.

NCDOL Warns Employers of Poster Scam

Raleigh—The N.C. Department of Labor is urging businesses across the state to be on the lookout for suspicious correspondence, after the department recently received multiple reports of persons using scare tactics or threatening language in an attempt to sell labor law posters to employers.

“These scams surface several times a year and businesses will contact us,” Labor Commissioner Cherie Berry said. “The threats of fines are bogus and should be ignored. The Department of Labor provides free sets of labor law posters to businesses.”

The scammers will often pose as either government officials or as acting on behalf of a poster company, such as the North Carolina Labor Law Poster Service, a non-regulatory entity that does not operate under any government agency. Other names these companies are known to go by include Personnel Concepts and Labor Law Compliance. There have been reports of these companies threatening fines from $7,000 to as much as $17,000 for non-compliance. Mailings can often appear to be from an official source and request fees for posters that cost anywhere from $84 to $200. Businesses should be aware that scammers may also attempt to contact them by either email, text or by phone.

While labor law posters are required to be displayed at a workplace by law, NCDOL inspectors carry the most up-to-date versions of the posters in their vehicles and will distribute them free of charge. The N.C. Department of Labor will never fine a business that has older versions of the poster displayed.

The NCDOL will print new versions anytime a significant law is changed or updated by Congress. Businesses are not required to order a new poster each time a change is made.  Employers that wish to order new posters can visit www.nclabor.com/posters/posters.htm or can call 1-800-625-2267.

Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce looking for Leadership Vance Candidates

Do you have a passion for leadership and a desire to be part of something bigger where you live or work? If so, then Leadership Vance might just be what you’re looking for right now.

“We are currently seeking 15 to 20 individuals for the 2017 class,” said Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce Membership Director & LV Program Director Annette Roberson. “Each class is comprised of individuals who live, work or have an interest in the Henderson/Vance County community.”

This renowned program, created in the 1980’s is a program of the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce. The program runs from February to July with ten class sessions plus a Community Services project and Graduation dinner.

It is designed to provide a behind-the-scenes view of the processes, programs, opportunities and challenges that impact the City of Henderson, and Vance County. Leadership Vance gives participants a chance to meet and exchange ideas with each other and with current community leaders.

Program graduates are equipped with the knowledge and the network to assume leadership roles at a local, regional, or state level and beyond. “We’ve had many graduates of this program use what they have learned to pursue leadership roles on city councils,  nonprofits or other business board of directors, in addition to local school boards,” said Roberson.

Program cost is $325 for Chamber members and $400 for non-Chamber members.  The tuition fee includes all course materials, meals, retreat expenses, travel, graduation banquet and diploma.  This year we have available two scholarship spots in the program provided by the LV Class of 2016.  Applications for the two scholarship spots will be looked at and voted on by the LV Class of 2016.

Duke Energy Cautions Customers to be Alert of Persistent Scam

Don’t allow yourself to fall prey to a scam.  And don’t be more vulnerable now just because of snow.  Read the information below, which will help you avoid being taking advantage of.  This information is confirmed by Duke Energy District Manager Tanya Evans.

Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce Statement:

The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce has been notified by some of our members of a scam involving persons falsely identifying themselves as Duke Energy representatives. A caller, claiming to be a Duke Energy service technician, tells the customer that a work order has been issued to immediately disconnect service. The caller states that a disruption of service can be avoided if an immediate payment is made. The scammer provides a telephone number for the customer to call to make the payment. The customer’s call is answered as Duke Energy by a very legitimately-sounding but fake IVR system. Duke Energy emphasizes that their customers are never contacted and asked to make a payment by telephone and provides the notice below to their customers. Please share this information with your friends, families, and business associates.

Duke Energy customers in five states are continually being targeted by scam artists claiming to represent the company. Phone, doorstep and email scammers claiming to be a utility company are nothing new – it happens to all utility companies throughout the U.S. and Canada. However, complaints about this particular scam have really increased over the last several months.

Scammers are calling residents and impersonating utility company staff, claiming to be collecting on late bills. They may falsify their caller ID information to make it appear as though the call is coming from Duke Energy or provide a number to call which, when answered, appears to be a Duke Energy contact.

Because we do occasionally contact our customers by phone, it can be difficult to tell a scammer from a real Duke Energy employee. Here are some tips:

 

  • If a caller specifically asks you to pay by prepaid debit card, this is a red flag. Prepaid debit cards are like cash and the transactions cannot be reversed.
  • Remember, you do not have to sign anything or give personal information to anyone calling you on the phone, sending you an email or showing up at your door.
  • If you feel pressured for immediate payment or personal information, hang up the phone and call us at the number on your utility bill. This will ensure you are speaking to a real Duke Energy representative.

 

The only way to protect yourself is to be vigilant, stay informed and guard your personal information.  If you feel something’s not quite right about the situation, contact the police immediately and report the call if you feel it was an impostor.

Home and Garden Show 12/20/16

Free small business tax workshop scheduled at VGCC Franklin Campus

The Vance-Granville Community College Small Business Center will present a free workshop, called “Sales & Use Tax 101,” on Thursday, Jan. 19, from 2-4 p.m. in room F1208 at the college’s Franklin County Campus, located just outside Louisburg.

In this hands-on workshop, Rhonda High of the N.C. Department of Revenue will help small business owners understand the basics of sales and use taxes, including registering for a sales and use tax account and learning about the most common types of sales and use taxes collected. High will also discuss the proper procedures for filing a sales and use tax return.

At the end of the workshop, there will be a question and answer session with the presenter, as well as opportunities to network with other business owners.
