Walmart Distribution Presents $5,000 to Boys and Girls Club

Around 100 Walmart Associates gathered today at the Walmart Distribution Center in Henderson to present the Boys and Girls Club of North Central North Carolina a check for $5,000.

Walmart and the Boys and Girls Club enjoy a unique partnership. Last month, a number of Walmart Associates volunteered their time to help paint much of the Boys and Girls Club on Clark Street in Henderson.

Robert Avery, maintenance operations manger for the Walmart Distribution Center, said, “We appreciate the opportunity to help in the community. We want to thank the 53 associates that volunteered around 260 hours at the Boys and Girls Club last month. We are grateful to be able to help the Boys and Girls Club.”

Mary Ann Avery, Resource Development Director for the Boys and Girls Club of North Central North Carolina, said, “Thanks Walmart for your continued support both financially and with the volunteers you provide. We’re so thankful that Walmart took the lead in helping us revitalize the Boys and Girls Club on Clark Street. We thank them for coming back to volunteer again in August.”

Downtown Henderson Moonlight Gala 2017 Update

In 2016 the Henderson Vance Downtown Development Commission held its first Moonlight Gala on Young Street in Downtown Henderson, NC.  After great success, we are hosting another Moonlight Gala in 2017 on September 9th, 2017.

We expect this event to sell out, as there are a limited number of tickets, only 138.  Those that purchased tickets for the event in 2016 got first chance to purchase tickets for the 2017 event on July 10th, 2017.

Today, July 14th, 2017  we’re opening up ticket sales to the public.

Note that as of July 14th there are only 16 tickets remaining available.

You may pay online, or by sending a check.  If you select to send a check, we must receive your payment by August 9th, 2017 or your order will be canceled and tickets will be forfeited.

VGCC connects students and new graduates to employers

As the end of the spring semester approached, the staff of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant program at Vance-Granville Community College held their first-ever “College-to-Career Mixer” for students to meet with potential employers. Not only were 15 new graduates of the Welding Technology and Mechatronics Engineering Technology programs in attendance, but also five students who were not yet ready to graduate but were looking for potential Work-Based Learning (WBL) opportunities.

Prior to the event, college staff members drilled the students on job interview techniques, and some students participated in mock interviews. All received resume preparation assistance and detailed information about the employers who would be in attendance at the mixer. Participating employers included BFS Industries, LLC, of Butner; Bridgestone/Bandag of Oxford; Novozymes North America of Franklinton; Carolina Sunrock of Kittrell and Butner; Trulite Glass & Aluminum Solutions of Youngsville; Glen Raven of Norlina; Delhaize America of Butner; J.P. Taylor/Universal Leaf of Oxford; and Altec of Creedmoor. 

“As we move forward, VGCC will be looking for ways to increase our synergy with our employer partners while providing a robust pipeline for qualified future employees,” said Zane Styers, who manages the TAACCCT grant. “Industry tours, Work-Based Learning, internships and apprenticeships are options that form the framework for our College-to-Career pipeline.”

The $1.75 million TAACCCT grant, the largest single competitive grant in VGCC history, has helped the college develop and enhance innovative training programs for advanced manufacturing careers. The TAACCCT grants are part of a nearly $2 billion initiative of the U.S. Department of Labor to expand targeted training programs for unemployed workers, especially those impacted by foreign trade. New Teacher Bag Donations

We need your help to welcome our new teachers to Vance County!
Snacks, gum, candy, water bottles, notepads, pens, pencils, coupons etc. are just a few of the things we need to pack in the bags. Make sure your business name and contact information is on the items you donate. This is a great way to advertise your business to a new group coming into the Vance County area.

We will be packing 150 bags and these will be distributed to new teachers at all Vance County Public schools, Kerr-Vance Academy, Henderson Collegiate, Vance Charter, and Crossroads Christian.

Peak-Season Kickoff this Saturday at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market

Summer is officially here… and so is your fresh, local summer produce at the Vance County Regional Farmers Market!

To celebrate we are going to have our annual PEAK SEASON KICKOFF June 24th! Join us at the VCRFM for the best locally grown seasonal fruits and vegetables. The VCRFM is open Wednesdays and  Saturdays at 7:30 a.m. and features a variety of locally grown produce, bedding plants for the garden including vegetables, herbs, flowers, and shrubs, pasture raised beef, eggs, and handmade crafts.

There will also be canned goods, jams, jellies, salsa & sauces.

Knowledgeable farmers and nursery vendors will be on hand to answer summer planting and growing questions.

Sadie’s School of Dance Joins the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce

Owner, Sadie Lee, has been dancing for over 15 years and is studying dance at Meredith College. She will graduate in May 2018 with a major in Dance. She is excited about her new business adventure, and is ready to serve the community.

Sadie’s School of Dance offers classes in ballet, pointe, lyrical, contemporary, musical theatre, jazz, hip-hop, tap, baton, tumbling and much more.

BoHo’s Party Place Celebrates Grand Opening

Character Antics has been a household name in Vance and surrounding counties for 17 years.

Providing BoHo the Clown, inflatable rides, face painting, balloon art and games has been their way to brighten the day of children of all ages.
