HPD Detains Two Suspects In Catalytic Converter Theft

The Henderson Police Department on Sunday morning followed up on an alert from Granville County that resulted in the detention of two suspects.

A BOLO (be on the lookout) alert was issued by Granville County about 9:30 a.m. Sunday in reference to a blue and white truck occupied by a white male and a white female, according to HPD social media post. The post continued by stating that the couple had been seen removing converters from disabled vehicles along I-85 in the area.

A police officer who had remembered seeing an abandoned vehicle along the northbound lanes of the interstate between exits 212 and 213 drove back to the location and spotted the suspect vehicle.

The officer “engaged the two suspects and noticed a catalytic converter in the bed of the suspects’ truck, partially covered by a tarp,” the post stated.

The two were transferred to the custody of Granville and the truck was towed.

Perry Memorial Library

GSK Bringing Summer Science Camp To Perry Memorial Library

Budding scientists in the area have a great resource to take advantage of after the last day of school called “Science in the Summer.” Vance County is one of 11 counties in the state where the science camp will be held, according to information from the Perry Memorial Library.

The program is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline and Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. This year’s theme is “Be a Biologist: Discover the World Around You!”

Camp and registration dates for Vance Country are below. Sessions will be held in the Farm Bureau Room at the library, located at 205 Breckenridge St.

Online registration is required at GSK Science in the Summer. Parents must complete the registration.

Level I is designed for rising second and third graders. Level I camp will be held June

20-24, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

Level II is designed for rising fourth and fifth graders. It also will be held June 20-24, but will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Registration for Levels I and II opens at 9 a.m. on March 7, 2022.

Level III is designed for rising sixth, seventh and eighth graders. It will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 25-27.

Registration for Level III opens at 9 a.m. on Mar. 21.

Granville and Franklin counties also will have the science camps. Registration varies by county, so parents in those counties should visit the GSK Science in the Summer to learn when that registration will open.

NC MedAssist

NC MedAssist Distributing OTC Meds In Oxford Mar. 11

NC MedAssist is coming to Oxford next week to give away an assortment of over-the-counter medications including pain relief products, as well as cold and flu medicines, allergy pills and children’s medication.

The distribution will take place on Friday, March 11 – rain or shine – from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the campus of the Masonic Home for Children, 600 College St., according to information from the non-profit based in Charlotte. Triangle North Healthcare Foundation is bringing the event to the area.

Registration is not required, but you may pre-register at www.medassist.org/mobile and pick up your order on the day of the event.

Items also may be picked up for a family member or friend.

All North Carolina residents over the age of 18 are welcome to pick up medications; there are no income or ID requirements.

NC MedAssist is a non-profit pharmacy that provides access to prescription medications to the uninsured and also provides free over-the-counter medications to anyone in need through its Mobile Free Pharmacy events.

West End Baptist Church 220 Fish Fry March 14th

The Baptist Men of West End Baptist Church on Dabney Drive in Henderson will be sponsoring a fish fry fundraiser to support local ministries.

It will take place at 220 Seafood Restaurant in Henderson on Monday, March 14th. The time is from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Cost is $8.00 per plate and includes trout, slaw, french fries and hushpuppies.

Take out only.

All proceeds will be used to support local ministries including ACTS, Lifeline Ministries, Rebuilding Hope, GRACE Ministries and many others.

Emilee Johnson New Executive Director of Operations MP Franklin

Maria Parham Franklin has a new executive director of operations, Emilee Johnson.

Maria Parham Health announced last week, via it’s Facebook page, that Johnson had been named to the position and that she has been with Maria Parham for 19 years.

In her most recent role, she served as senior director overseeing rehabilitative services, security, medical office leasing, dietary and environmental services.

The MPH post indicated Johnson is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and that she has shown exceptional leadership qualities within the hospital and community.

Her volunteer work with the Henderson Family YMCA, Triangle North Healthcare and Adopt-A-Highway are a handful of examples of her outreach and community mindedness.

Congratulations to Emilee Johnson.

H-V Crime Stoppers Chicken Plate Fundraiser March 11

To raise money and local awareness, the Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers will have a chicken plate fundraiser on March 11 at the Vance County Rescue Squad on 1735 Maynard Road. The event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available from any board member. Tickets must be purchased in advance. It’s takeout only, and delivery can be arranged for 10 or more plates.

According to the new president of the local Henderson-Vance Crime Stoppers, Frankie Nobles, there was not a single payout request in 2021.

Either there were no indictments or convictions as a result of tips sent in anonymously or, more likely, no tips sent in at all.

“We need the community to step up,” Nobles told WIZS. He also said he believes that people may be worried that their identity will be discovered. But Nobles said that is not the case.

Calling or texting the Crime Stoppers number at 492 1925 is completely anonymous, Nobles said. The calls or messages get routed through a maze of different servers. The software that is used is safe and confidential.

He said, “We never even know who’s getting the money.”

SportsTalk: Coach’s Corner: Henderson Collegiate Advances To Sweet 16

For the fourth consecutive time the Henderson Collegiate men’s basketball team has made the Sweet 16. Last night Henderson Collegiate defeated West Columbus at Aycock Gym by the score of 62 – 39. The game marked the program’s 100th win and star T.J. Ragland reached the 500 point mark in his high school career. “We knew we had to wear them down,” Coach George Marshall said. “This team is super unique, we know how to win ugly,” Marshall continued.

Marshall feels the team is peaking at the right time. When you consider the team lost nine seniors from last years team then the march through the playoffs is even more impressive. Marshall also feels the team does have room for improvement citing more patience at the free throw line and the need to score a few more points. “The odds of 20 point wins from here on out are slim to none,” Marshall said. Henderson Collegiate also defeated Vance Charter School 74-41 earlier in the playoffs and those big wins are going to disappear most likely starting with tomorrow’s game against Kip Pride.  Henderson Collegiate defeated Kip Pride 68-57 back on February 5th but that was a different time.  Marshall described Kip Pride as hungry and healthy. Coach Marshall says his team has been great at finding a way to work together to get the job done.  In the first meeting with Kip Pride the team trailed by 15 going into the fourth quarter before pulling out the win.

Tomorrow’s game will be the third home game in a row during the playoff run and Marshall is looking forward to a full gym at Aycock tomorrow as Henderson Collegiate looks to advance to the next round of the playoffs.

 

 

AARP Driver Safety Classes Scheduled For Senior Drivers

Registration is now open for AARP Driver Safety Courses hosted by  Granville County Senior Services. The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation’s first and largest driver safety  course designed especially for drivers 50 and older. The course is intended to help drivers live more independently  as they age and remain safe on today’s roads.

The AARP Driver Safety Program course covers defensive driving techniques and the normal changes in vision,  hearing, and reaction time associated with aging. The course also provides practical techniques for adjusting to  these changes to ensure the driver’s own safety and that of others on the road. Participants learn about current  rules of the road and how to operate their vehicles safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment.  Course topics include maintaining proper following distance, methods of changing lanes and turning at  intersections, effects of medications on driving, minimizing the effect of dangerous blind spots, limiting driver  distractions such as eating, smoking, and cell phone use, properly using safety belts, air bags, and anti-lock brakes, maintaining physical flexibility, and monitoring the driving skills and capabilities of yourself and others.

The North Granville Senior Center in Stovall will hold this class on Monday, March 21 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  You must preregister for this class by calling the center at 919. 693.3383.

The Granville County Senior Center in Oxford will hold this class on Thursday, March 31 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  You must preregister for this class by calling the center at 919. 693.1930.

The course cost is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members, which includes all course materials.  Course participants may be eligible to receive a state mandated, multi-year discount on their auto insurance  premium. Participants should contact their insurance company or agent for more details. The instructor for this  class will be Lynroy Thomas, a certified AARP Driver Safety Program instructor.
