Are you registered to vote? There is still time to register before the fall elections.

In Vance County, the Board of Elections Office is located at 300 South Garnett Street, in the Dennis Building, on the corner of Winder and Garnett Streets in downtown Henderson. Office hours are Monday- Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Faye Gill is the Vance County Board of Elections Director. Stop by to pick up and fill out a voter registration form today.

Also, if you have recently moved to Vance County, or you have moved to a new home in a new district, you can go by the Board of Elections office to update your address and find out the voting site location in your new district.

The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce encourages you to take an active part in your civic duty of being a good citizen by registering to vote.

Two Arrested for Obtaining Property by False Pretense at Quality Equipment

On August 6, 2020, the Vance County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Unit received information regarding the attempt of obtaining property by false pretense at Quality Equipment located at 70 John Deere Road, Henderson, NC.

Investigators arrived at the scene and observed two individuals loading property onto a trailer after they had forged a person or person‘s name. 

Investigators approached suspects Hoshayah Abraham Isreal (Age 26) and Javon Tyrell Williams (Age 28).

Ultimately, Isreal was charged with Obtaining Property by False Pretense, Accessing Computer to Defraud, Possession of Stolen Property and Possession Fraudulent ID. Williams was charged with Accessory After the Fact, Possession Stolen Property and Possession Fraudulent ID 

Isreal’s bond was set at $70,000 secured, and Williams‘ bond was set at $42,000.00 secured. Both parties are set to be in Vance County District Court on September 14, 2020.

Note from Sheriff Curtis Brame: We believe these two suspects have been operating in other jurisdictions throughout North Carolina – possibly in Durham, Alamance, Wake and Cumberland counties.

If either of these two suspects has been into your place of business to purchase lawn care equipment or filled out an application for a line of credit, please contact your local law enforcement agency or the Vance County Sheriff’s Office.

Coach’s Corner 08/07/20: Vance Charter’s Nadia Simmons Heading to NC Wesleyan

Nadia Simmons, basketball player and recent Vance Charter School graduate, appeared on WIZS Coach’s Corner Friday.

A power forward for Vance Charter’s Women’s Basketball, Simmons plans to continue playing the game she loves at NC Wesleyan College this fall.

“I went for a visit, and it just felt like home,” said Simmons of her decision to attend Wesleyan. “I met up with some of the players, and everything just felt right. I feel like it’s the right decision.”

In a previous discussion with WIZS, Vance Charter Coach Brian Howard said that Simmons is “one of the best athletes I’ve ever had the privilege of coaching.”

Averaging 20 points per game in high school, Simmons said she is “determined and ready to work hard [at Wesleyan].” She continued, “Going in, you have to work hard, have a good mindset and be ready to rock-and-roll.”

The Henderson City Council will hold its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, August 10, 2020, at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, 134 Rose Ave. in Henderson, NC.

Due to COVID-19 health mandates issued by Governor Cooper, the number of citizens allowed into Council Chambers is limited. However, members of the community are strongly encouraged to provide questions/comments for Council in writing as follows and to listen via Zoom.

Dedication of Granville County Law Enforcement Center Postponed

The Ribbon Cutting and Open House for the Granville County Law Enforcement Center, originally scheduled for Monday, August 10, 2020, has been postponed, due to the expanded Phase Two restrictions set in North Carolina this week.

The decision to postpone was made on Friday, August 7, after considering the continued health guidelines that were required to be observed.

“This was a difficult decision to make,” said Board of Commissioners Chair and former Sheriff David T. Smith, “but we want to ensure the health and safety of everyone who had expressed interest in attending.”

A rescheduled date will soon be announced.

Reminder: Free Lunch for Law Enforcement, First Responders Sat., Aug. 8

Sponsors from the Vance County community will provide lunch for on or off duty law enforcement officers, medical workers and first responders on Saturday, August 8, 2020.

The free lunch will be served drive-thru style starting at 11:30 a.m. at Tony’s Auto & Tire located at 415 Raleigh Road in Henderson. The meal includes pork, chicken and fixings.

HPD: Search Warrant Yields 448 Dosage Units of Heroin

On Wednesday, August 5, 2020, officers of the Henderson Police Department served a search warrant on a residence located at 150 Faulkner Street.

During the service of the warrant, 448 dosage units of heroin and $1,945 in U.S. Currency were located.

Jerome Manson, age 32, was arrested on scene and charged with the following: trafficking Heroin by possession, trafficking Heroin by manufacturing, maintaining a dwelling place for a controlled substance and PWIMSD Heroin.

Manson, who was on pre-trial release, received a $500,000 secured cash bond.

Downtown Henderson

Town Talk 08/06/20: Conversation With DDC Chair; Henderson Achieves Main Street Status

Dr. Stephen Pearson, chair of the Downtown Development Commission, appeared on WIZS Town Talk Thursday at 11 a.m.

Pearson was pleased to announce that the N.C. Main Street and Rural Planning Center recently named Henderson a designated N.C. Main Street Community. A part of the Main Street Program from the mid-1980s until approximately 2010, a lapse in the completion of requirements cost the downtown area the coveted distinction.

Pearson said the extensive efforts of DDC Board members, the City of Henderson and Downtown Development Director Kathy Walters, among others, made the reinstatement possible.

Benefits of Main Street status include technical assistance with building restoration and access to grant money, perks that Pearson is hopeful will help attract new businesses and breathe new life into downtown. “If you hear excitement in my voice, it’s because I am very excited about downtown’s growth and revitalization,” said Pearson.

Pearson said he believed so strongly in the potential of the area that he and wife Amanda, formerly based in Tampa, FL, opened Sadie’s Coffee Corner in the former Gupton’s Gun Shop building in downtown Henderson late last year.

“We want this revitalization movement to encourage people to relook at downtown, to relook at being on the DDC Board,” Pearson said. “I want a youthful, energetic and diverse Board of Directors that represents the industries that we need to have in downtown.”
