Polar Plunge Participants Will be ‘Freezin’ For A Reason’ Next Weekend

The Vance County Special Olympics 2019 Polar Plunge will be held at the Satterwhite Point Glasshouse on Saturday, February 2, 2019. Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. that morning; jump begins at 10:30 a.m. Inclement weather date will be Saturday, February 9, 2019.
The Polar Plunge is an event for courageous participants willing to jump into Kerr Lake in the middle of the winter, all to support and raise funds for the Special Olympics of Vance County.
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with others.
All donations earned from the Polar Plunge will go to support local athletes. Individuals are required to collect a minimum of $30 to participate.
Prizes will be given for best costume (individual and team); most money raised (individual and team); and largest team.
Every participant will receive a t-shirt. There is a limit of 250 participants.

Granville Vendors Invited to Participate in Upcoming Bridal Tour & Show

Granville County vendors are invited to participate in the 2019 “Brides on Wheels” Bridal Tour and Vendor Show, scheduled for April 14. Brides planning a 2019-2020 wedding will be taking a scenic tour on the “Bridal Bus” to learn more about wedding locations and resources available to help plan the “perfect” event.
The day includes a stop at four wedding/reception venues, as well as early access to a Vendor Show at the Clarion Inn and Suites on Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue in Oxford. Florists, photographers, caterers, event planners, disc jockeys, designer table and chair-hire companies, etc. will be set up to welcome the new brides – and members of the public – to display a variety of wedding service options. The Vendor Show will be open from noon until 4 p.m., with tickets now available to attend.
Vendors interested in participating in this show – a special feature of the “Brides on Wheels” Bridal Show and open to the public – are requested to register by Feb. 15. Space is limited, with first priority being given to Granville-based vendors. After Feb. 15, vendors outside of Granville County will be able to sign up to participate, depending on space limitations and availability.
Sponsorships for the Vendor Show are also available, as well as opportunities to distribute items to future bridal couples in “goodie bags” that will be given out to all who participate in the Bridal Tour.

Informational Meeting on NC Pre-K Application to be Held Jan. 29

An information meeting on how to complete the NC Pre-K site selection application will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at 4 p.m. at the Vance County Schools Administrative Services Center at 1724 Graham Avenue in Henderson.
All interested officials from child care facilities are encouraged to attend the meeting.
Site applications from qualifying child care sites are due Thursday, April 11, 2019, by 4 p.m.
Completed applications should be sent to the Vance County Schools, Federal Programs Office at 1724 Graham Avenue in Henderson. The mailing address is P.O. Box 7001, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Local Youth Invited to Showcase Their Talents in D.R.E.A.M. Show

The 2019 D.R.E.A.M.(Diverse Roles in Entertainment Arts and Music) Talent Showcase is open to children and teenagers interested in showcasing their talent in drama, dance, musical instruments and singing.
The talent show will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2019, at 6 p.m. in the E.M. Rollins Elementary School Auditorium.
The deadline to register is Friday, February 15, 2019.
Admission will be $7 for ages 18 and older; $5 for children ages 6-17.

‘Know It, Control It’ to Help Warren Residents Manage Blood Pressure

NC Cooperative Extension-Warren County is offering a new high blood pressure management program for adults created by the Community and Clinical Connections for Prevention and Health Branch of the North Carolina Division of Public Health. “Know It, Control It” is a community-based blood pressure management program designed to help participants self-monitor their blood pressure and make healthy lifestyle changes to control high blood pressure. Trained blood pressure coaches teach this program using evidence-based strategies to manage cardiovascular disease.
“High blood pressure is the leading cause of heart disease, stroke and kidney disease in the United States,” said the American Heart Association (AHA). “Knowing your blood pressure numbers can help you take action NOW to prevent or delay the development of more serious complications.”
Almost one out of every three adults in the United States – 29% or about 75 million people – has been diagnosed with high blood pressure. Among adults 65 years and older, two out of three have high blood pressure and half of them do not have it under control. “All adults should consult with a health care provider, learn their blood pressure numbers, learn to self-monitor their blood pressure and take steps to get healthy,” spoken on behalf of the AHA.
“Know It, Control It” classes are open to people who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure. During each class, blood pressure coaches will lead a discussion on a healthy habit that will help participants control their blood pressure. On class days, the blood pressure coach will also assist each participant with measuring and logging his/her blood pressure with the goal of having them become proficient at tracking and measuring their blood pressure on their own.
