Waste Industries Announces Holiday Pick Up Schedule

Waste Industries will be closed in observance of Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 22, 2018. To make up for the missed day, regularly-scheduled Thursday pick up will be done on Friday, November 23; regularly-scheduled Friday pick up will be done on Saturday, November 24.

Waste Industries will also be closed Tuesday, December 25, 2018, in observance of Christmas and Tuesday, January 1, 2019, in observance of New Year’s Day. For the time period of December 25-28, 2018, and January 1-4, 2019, regularly-scheduled pick up will be delayed by one day.

Oxford’s Annual Turkey Trot Scheduled for Thanksgiving Morning

The 14th Annual Turkey Trot is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday, November 22 – Thanksgiving morning – in downtown Oxford. Registration for the fun run/walk begins at 8:30 a.m. at Oxford United Methodist Church, located at the corner of College and McClanahan streets. The entry fee is two cans of food or a monetary donation for Area Congregations In Ministry (ACIM).

The route begins at the church, goes down College Street, through the campus of the Masonic Home for Children and ends at the Methodist Church. Come out for a fun morning as we give thanks while helping others!

Gospel Play ‘Such A Time As This’ to Benefit Recent Hurricane Victims

A gospel stage play entitled “Such A Time As This” will be held on Saturday, December 1 at 2 p.m. at E.M. Rollins Elementary School auditorium. The play is a story of triumph after tragedy and will speak to the heart and soul of anyone who has suffered loss. Come out and enjoy a day of praise, worship and healing.

Proceeds from this event will benefit Hurricane Florence and Michael victims from New Bern, NC. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for youth and can be purchased online at www.eventbrite.com. For groups, call Connie Ragland at 252-432-7127.

KVA’s Lane White to Play Baseball at Chowan College

Lane White, a senior at Kerr-Vance Academy, signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Chowan College. Pictured with Lane are his mother Sallie, father Chris, and coaches Mike Rigsbee and Todd Wilkerson.

Lane will begin his studies at Chowan in the fall.

 

Camp Recognized as an ‘Educator of Excellence’ at Recent Reception

Robin Camp, an Exceptional Children’s Program (ECP) Teacher of Excellence with Granville County Public Schools (GCPS) was recognized last week at the Educator of Excellence Reception at the ECP Conference. Camp works at Granville Central High School in Stem, NC.

Dr. Stan Winborne, public information officer for GCPS, congratulated Camp on her well-deserved honor. “Please join us in congratulating Robin. She demonstrates daily ‘Excellence and Achievement for all!’ We are so proud of her, and can’t wait to see what she does next!”

H-V Chamber’s Annual Banquet to Feature Keynote Speaker Allison Capps

The 81st Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce Annual Membership Meeting and Banquet will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2019, at the VGCC Civic Center.

This year’s keynote speaker is Allison Capps, Assistant District Attorney for North Carolina’s 9th Prosecutorial District.

Allison Siler Capps grew up in Belmont, NC. She attended Peace College and received a B.A. in Psychology. Following Peace, she attended the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University where she received her law degree.

She began her career as an Assistant District Attorney in the 2nd Prosecutorial District, working for just over a year. She returned to the 9th District, (Granville, Vance, Franklin and Warren counties) where she had interned while in law school and currently serves.

As a part of the DA’s office, she has tried over 20 jury trials, ranging from DWIs to First Degree Murder cases and everything in between. She has received numerous awards from Crime Stoppers, NC Gang Investigators Assoc. and others.

Mrs. Capps is an active member of Delrayno Baptist Church, President of the Board of Directors for the Granville Education Foundation, participates in the Girls on the Run Program and in the NC Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. She resides in Oxford with her husband, Jason, and their son, Luke.
