Vance County High School Vipers Fall 41-22 To Franklinton
The Vance County High School Vipers went looking for the program’s first-ever victory at Franklinton Friday night but came home with a tough 41-22 nonconference defeat. The 3A Red Rams showed that they still had a potent running attack, and Viper Coach Darry Ragland got a good look at his defense under harsh “combat” conditions. The Vance offense, though inconsistent, showed many bright sports and scored on big plays by Josh Joyner, who scored the first Viper TD on a kickoff return, junior Noah Terry, who ran for a score in the third period, and QB Samien Burwell, who ran for the final touchdown in the final seconds of the game. Burwell passed well in the first quarter, especially in the first half to freshman WR William Hawkins Jr. But, Burwell was intercepted five times, and his receivers dropped some easy ones in the second half. VCHS will make a LOOOONG road trip to Red Springs next week for its next non-conference matchup.

Attacker in Vance Co. Stabbing Incident Quickly Apprehended

On August 8, 2018, Officers of the Henderson Police Department responded to the 400 block of Pearl Street in reference to a dispatched call of a stabbing. Officers were close by and were on scene within two minutes of receiving the call.
When they arrived, they found Derrick Antonio Davis (age 31) suffering from what appeared to be a stab wound. Information was obtained quickly and a suspect was developed while on scene. Charles Antonio Hayes (age 44), of Merritt Mill Rd, Oxford House, Chapel Hill, NC, was identified as the attacker. The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was familiar with Charles A. Hayes, and at the time of the incident Charles A. Hayes was attempting to rob Mr. Davis.
A search of the area by the Henderson Police Department, North Carolina Highway Patrol, and the Vance County Sheriff’s Office was conducted, and Charles A. Hayes was located and placed into custody within the first hour of the incident occurring. He was found hiding under an abandoned structure.
We are extremely grateful for the valuable information and cooperation that has been given by our citizens. Their assistance brought immediate closure to this case. As always, we will seek any additional information that our citizens may have about the incident or the circumstance that lead to the crime.

Granville Co. Board of Education’s Aug. Meeting to Focus on Declining Enrollment

The Granville County Board of Education will meet for a BOE Work Session on Monday, August 20th, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. at the Granville County Public Central Office, 101 Delacroix Street, Oxford, North Carolina.
The purpose of the meeting will be to receive information and discuss long-term planning options to address school facility needs and capacity in light of declining enrollment. The board will also meet in a Closed Session for Personnel/Attorney-Client Privilege in accordance with N.C. General Statute 143.318.11 (a)(6), 143-318.11 (a)(3), 143.318.11 (a)(5) and Section 115C-321 on this evening.
The next scheduled board meeting is Monday, September 10, 2018, at 6 p.m.

Aycock Rec. Center Offering Fast-Track Swim Lessons for Ages 3 – Adult

Henderson-Vance Recreation & Parks will offer fast-track swim lessons at the Aycock Recreation Center for ages 3 – adults. Beginning Monday, September 10, 2018, lessons will take place each subsequent Monday and Thursday in September.
The fee for the series of six lessons is $30. Registration forms and fees are due by Friday, September 7.

Louws Charged With First & Second Degree Exploitation of a Minor

On August 15, 2018, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations, Narcotics, and Patrol Units along with the Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes against Children Task Force, and agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigations arrested Mitchell Franklin Louws, a Franklin County resident. Mitchell Franklin Louws was charged with the following: five (5) counts of First Degree Exploitation of a Minor, and five (5) counts of Second Degree Exploitation of a Minor.
Mr. Louws was charged after an extensive investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Mitchell Franklin Louws is currently being held in the Franklin County Detention Center under a $1,000,000 secured bond.
Mitchell Franklin Louws – 789 Timberlake Road Franklinton, NC, 27525 – DOB: 03/08/1995
This investigation is on-going and additional charges are anticipated.
Mitchell Franklin Louws, a Franklin County resident, was arrested on August 15, 2018, and charged with five (5) counts of First Degree Exploitation of a Minor, and five (5) counts of Second Degree Exploitation of a Minor.
