Warren County Seeks Help in Broadband Initiative Survey

The Warren County Broadband Initiative is currently conducting a survey to learn about the current extent of broadband service in Warren County and to attract Internet Service Providers to the County that can offer expanded services and higher speed options. Broadband Internet access has become vital to conducting business and to education. This survey is the first step in determining what areas need service.

Warren County invites all Warren County residents and businesses to complete this survey. Henderson PD Releases St. Baldrick’s Day Cornhole Tournament Details

St. Baldrick’s Day Cornhole Tournament

Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the Henderson Police Department

Registration: 11:30 a.m. Tournament Begins: 12:30 a.m.

Boards: The boards measure 2ft. in width 4ft. in length. The hole is 6” diameter, measured 9” from the top of the board to the center of the hole. Bags: The bags being used are 6” X 6” in size and weigh 16 oz. Spacing: Each board will be positioned at a distance of 27’ from the front of one board to the other. All boards and bags will be provided by the sponsor.  No personal boards or bags will be allowed.

Tournament Format

This will be a single elimination tournament. The number of teams will be determined by the number of entries. Team placement is randomly determined prior to the start of the tournament.

Scoring

A coin toss will determine who will throw first to begin the tournament game. Players will alternate throws until all 8 bags have been thrown.

  1. Each bag on the board = 1 point. Each bag in the hole = 3 points.
  2. Any bags touching the ground or “bounced” on the box do not count and are to be removed prior to the next bag being thrown by the opposing team.
  3. Total points for each team are calculated. The team scoring the most points in a round receives their total score.
  4. The team who scores last will have the first throw of the next round.
  5. The first team to achieve a score of 21 points or more will declared the winner. A tie will require extra rounds until a winner is determined.

 

Ground Rules

  1. The winning team is to collect and return all bags and report their final score to the tournament director at the registration table.
  2. There will be a “No Skunk” rule.
  3. The tournament committee will have the final decision regarding any questions or conflicts arising throughout the tournament.
  4. Be polite and courteous at all time.

Henderson Driver License Office Closing at 1:00 p.m. Today

Officials with NC DMV have alerted WIZS News that the Henderson Driver License Office will close at 1:00 p.m. today.  The reason for the closing is to replace the office carpeting.  The office will reopen Monday at noon.

All offices are closed tomorrow and will reopen Monday in observance of the Easter Holiday.  The Henderson office will not open until noon Monday so the office can be rearranged following the carpet installation.

View online notice – “This office will close Thursday, Apr. 13 at 1 p.m. in order to replace indoor carpeting. Please visit offices Thursday afternoon in Oxford or Louisburg. The office will re-open on Monday, Apr. 17 at 12 noon.”

VGCC Men’s Basketball Tryouts set for April 19

The Vance-Granville Community College Vanguards men’s basketball team will hold spring tryouts for the upcoming 2017-18 season on Wednesday, April 19, from 6-8 p.m., at Western Vance High School (2785 Poplar Creek Road, Henderson, NC 27537).

All participants must bring a current physical to the tryouts. Members of the basketball team must enroll as full-time VGCC students for the fall 2017 and spring 2018 semesters.

Police Issue Phone Scam Public Notice

Scammers are using the threat of arrest warrants to pressure people into forking over hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars. Today the Henderson Police Department was contacted by a citizen who stated that she was threaten that if she didn’t pay $6,000 to the IRS that she would be arrested. The call came from a Texas number.

The caller wanted the potential victim’s debit card information. She refused and hung up the phone. The caller called back manipulating caller ID to make the number appear to come from the Henderson Police Department. The caller told the potential victim that he had obtained a warrant for the unpaid debt and wanted to know where she was so he could arrest her or she could still pay the money to avoid arrest. The potential victim told the caller that she was at the Police Department and to come get her.

The callers convince people to give their debit or credit card numbers out or make the payments by wiring it through Western Union or buying a prepaid credit card like Green Dot and registering it online.

Citizens are reminders to NEVER give out card numbers to anyone and to never purchase debit cards to send to anyone unless you are sending it as gift to someone you know. The most important thing to remember is that in North Carolina it is illegal for law enforcement officers to accept money to prevent an arrest or to squash a warrant.
