Skunk Collected in Oxford Tests Positive for Rabies

Granville County Animal Control reports the pickup of a skunk that tested positive for rabies. The rabid animal was collected in the vicinity of Cornwall and Greenway Roads in Oxford.

As mandated by North Carolina law and for their own protection, all dogs, cats and ferrets over four months of age are required to have current rabies shots. Dogs and cats should also receive a rabies booster vaccine one year after the first vaccine and every three years thereafter if the vaccine is licensed for three-year use.

Granville County Animal Control offers a reminder that one-year vaccinations are available at the Granville County Animal Shelter, Mondays through Fridays, from noon until 4:30 p.m. The cost of each shot is only $6. 15th Annual Turkey Trot in Downtown Oxford to Benefit ACIM

The 15th Annual Turkey Trot will take place in downtown Oxford on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, 2019.

This annual tradition benefits Area Congregations in Ministry (ACIM), Granville County’s food bank.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at Oxford United Methodist Church on College Street. Walkers and runners set off on the roughly 2-mile course at 9 a.m.

The entry fee is two cans of food or a cash donation in any amount to ACIM. Under 18? Bring a parent to sign a permission form.

Let’s make this the biggest Turkey Trot EVER as we enjoy a morning of fun, fitness and fellowship – all in the spirit of giving thanks and helping our neighbors.

Oxford’s Property, Public Safety Committees to Meet Tues., Nov. 19

The Property, Buildings, and Real Estate Committee for the Oxford Board of Commissioners will meet on Tuesday, November 19, 2019, at 1 p.m. The meeting will be held in the First Floor Training Room, City Hall, 300 Williamsboro Street.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the Armory and Properties and Code Enforcement Concerns.

The Public Safety Committee for the Oxford Board of Commissioners will meet on Tuesday, November 19, 2019, immediately following the Property, Buildings, and Real Estate Committee meeting. The meeting will be held in the First Floor Training Room, City Hall, 300 Williamsboro Street.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the Potential Installation of Downtown Temporary Street Bulb-Outs.

Oxford Preparatory Lower School Announces First Quarter Honor Roll

Oxford Preparatory Lower School held its first-quarter award ceremony during the last week of October. This year the school is serving students in 5th and 6th grades.

During the award ceremonies, students were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements, as well as for excellence in the arts and music. In addition, four students – Hailey Crowder, Cesar Castillo-Azuara, Zander Boone and Cameron Fauntleroy were recognized as “Rising Griffins,” demonstrating strong leadership and personal responsibility in their daily activities.

Oxford Christmas Parade

Oxford’s Christmas Parade, Lighting of the Greens Set for Dec. 6

A magical night is planned on Friday, December 6, 2019, for the 14th Annual Lighting of the Greens and Christmas Parade sponsored by Downtown Oxford Economic Development Corporation (DOEDC), the City of Oxford and partner Granville Health System. Events are scheduled from 4 until 9 p.m. in downtown Oxford.

The Christmas parade will take place rain, snow or shine, so please plan accordingly.

Event Schedule:

4 – 6:30 p.m. – Vendor Market opens

5:30 p.m. – Line up begins for parade participants

6:30- 6:45 p.m. – Welcome and opening comments

6:45 – 6:50 p.m. – Lighting of the Greens

7 p.m. – Parade starts

The parade will start from Belle Street, travel down Williamsboro Street, then Hillsboro Street, and end by taking a right on McClanahan Street to the Public Works Parking lot. Please note that there will be no parking in the Public Works parking lot (127 Penn Avenue) on the evening of the event.

Those interested in participating in the parade should mail in an entry form (click here) and payment by Friday, November 15, 2019, to City Hall, Attn. Christmas Parade, 300 Williamsboro Street, Oxford, NC 27587. Space is limited to 85 parade entries on a first-come-first-served basis.

Commissioners to Hear From Public on Possible Internet Sweepstakes Moratorium

The City of Oxford Board of Commissioners will hold their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 12, 2019, at 7 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Board Room, City Hall in Oxford.

Agenda items include:

Public Hearing to receive citizen input on the request from the UDO Committee asking for consideration of placing a moratorium on any new internet sweepstakes establishments.

Consider adopting an ordinance placing a 60-day moratorium on any new internet sweepstakes establishments in the B-2 (highway business) and B-3 (general business) zoning districts.

Consider approving the 2020 Board of Commissioner Meeting dates.

Disposition of City Property – the City of Oxford has a 1989 Grumman Fire Truck that needs to be disposed of either by sale or donation. The City put out a notice to garner interest in the fire truck and received several letters of interest. The Public Safety Committee recommended donating the Fire Truck to another Fire Department that is in need.
